Fischli & Weiss filled a warehouse with dozens & dozens these devices linked in series with the output of one element trigger the next one in the pipeline. The camera just keeps walking down the line following the action. You get the feeling the devices are set up in a large circle inside a huge empty building with the camera in the middle slowly turning to follow the train of activity.

The audio is quite intense, as well. Each device has its own very distinctive sound, which helps to make the video quite animated.

I'm guessing there is more than just one CG scene here...Marketing..sheesh...

    3. Re:Only 1 CG scene? by Anonymous Coward · · Score: 0

Take a physics class. Pay special attention to the chapter on torque. That platform is lightweight, but it's clearly front-heavy. If you watch the video carefully, you'll see that at the point in time where the front wheels leave the platform, the back wheels are indeed still behind the brake discs that serve as a fulcrum. However, the point where the back tires contact the platform is only slightly behind the fulcrum. Probably less than a foot and maybe as little as six inches. (That's 10 to 20 cm for those who use reasonable units.)

Getting back to torque, there is no net torque around a point (and thus no acceleration) when all of the lever arms around that point are balanced evenly. In simplified terms what this means for this situation is that the force of the rear tires TIMES the miniscule distance from the rear tires to the fulcrum would have to overcome the torque due to front-heaviness that is holding the front of the ramp on the end of the ground. And yes, that station wagon is heavy, but the point is that the torque it contributes is the product of a pretty big number (force) and a pretty small number (distance), and the result is a number that's not really all that big. So that torque is probably not enough to tip the ramp.

However, even if it IS enough to tip the ramp, the force only occurs for maybe 1/4 second. That ramp, being a very long object with plenty of mass at its extremities, has surely got a decently large moment of inertia. So, while it might move, the angular acceleration will be quite small unless there is a big torque. There simply isn't enough time for much movement before the rear wheels are past the fulcrum and creating torque in the opposite direction.

If you'd like an intuitive feel for this, find a door somewhere in your house, and pull it toward you until it's almost closed. Then, place the tip of just one finger (or thumb) about one inch from the edge on the end that has the hinges. Press firmly on the door with that finger and try to open it. You'll find that it moves pretty slowly and requires (literally) over an order of magnitude more force to move it than it would if you pushed on the end with the doorknob. How far open can you push the door in 1/4 second?

Note that all of this is fairly non-obvious. It is obvious, though, that lots of care (and probably precise measurement) went into the making of this advertisement, so I would not be surprised if the "hey, isn't the ramp going to flip up?" feeling is an intentional part of the joke.
