I actually took the time to read history.html, seems it wasn't that bad afterall. Especially since he did it "by accident".
If my recollection is correct after all these years, I think he did stupid stuff like "echo 'password entry' >/etc/passwd" instead of using ">>" to add an account. So he ended up trashing the password file, taking the system down until someone could restore the backup from tape. In addition, I think there were a number of other vandal type attacks that were thought to be from him, but could not be confirmed. The general consensus at the time was that he was just an classic "script kiddie". Anyone could get a free account to do whatever they wanted, but it wasn't enough for him. He had to take down a community resource just to prove he could.
Why did you trash our community operated system?

I'm a long time user of nyx.net. In 1994 you made a mess of the system that many people relied on to access the Internet. This system was and is, free Internet access for everyone. Your actions caused unpaid voluteers a lot of time and effort and shut down many people's only access to the Internet at a time when there were no other options. See:
I'd also like to run Linux off a CD, but my requirements are slightly different.
I have a (very) low-end laptop with a dead hard drive. It does not have the ability to boot of a CD, only a floppy. I would like to boot off the floppy and then root over to the CD. I would use it for a firewall, router, etc. I haven't been able to cram pcmcia pppd and the rest on just a floppy. So If I could utilize the CD I'd be home free.
Does anyone know if any of the above mentioned CD solutions support booting off a floppy?

well, if they want to use grayscale mosaic [batbox.org] to "obfuscate" their video transmissions, then I guess thats a good thing;-) jk* - i think its cool.
I hope some people have at least had some fun with my little programs!
Seriously... I don't want you using my software to help kill people.
So yes... you can't use GPL code.
... and stop killing people!:)
Sigh...
[sarcasm on] OK, lets just disband all of our military forces. Who needs them. [sarcasm off]
Did you ever think that the military is one reason people are allowed to spout such uninformed nonsense in public? Some people don't have a clue about the world.
[sarcasm on] The military is evil! If we all just hug each other we'll all be happy and then we'll start a commune, and then, and then, and then... [sarcasm off]
The US Navy is more than welcome to all of my code.
Exactly what problem are "smart" cards designed to solve for me, the consumer? My current credit card works fine - I really don't want a card that tracks my personal information and purchases. I'd rather have a dumb anonymous card rather than a smart "personal" card.
As the satellite's signals aren't very strong by the time they arrive here, it won't take much to interfere with it. Even if Northpoint is using a dish to beam its signal to each individual customer, there *will* be objects that will reflect some of the signal, at odd and unpredictable angles.
Correct. And "minimal" interference will translate to a 100% picture loss for people who already have a marginal signal or during heavy rain. There are 10's of millions of satellite subscribers in the US. Northpoint wants to step in and interfere with their service? And grab the frequencies for free? What a deal!
Yes, that's right, I have 256 M and no swap used... Yet X claims to use more than my system memory. Again, don't trust top.
That's not quite fair. The reason that X shows up so big is that it has memory mapped memory from your video card. My "top" looks similar. I have an X server that blindly maps a huge area of RAM off my card even though the card only has 16 meg. Top can't know this. If you want to see what your X server is mapping, do an "strace X" from a console.
Um, because you'll still be way richer than most other people? If you make $100k annually and I make $20k, and I'm taxed 10% while you're taxed 50% (an extreme example),
Not an extreme example for Nader. He's talking about 90% tax rates for the "wealthy".
you're still left with well over twice of what I am. Does that mean that your work is twice as important as mine? Is a lawyer twice as important as a teacher?
Are you suggesting that the government should be deciding who should be more highly paid? [sarcasm]I know I trust the government to do this[/sarcasm]
Secondly, you have to take into account the fact that the very rich aren't making wealth. None of them. They aren't sitting in a factory sewing buttons onto shirts
What? In order to make wealth you have to do manual labor? I'll have to tell that to the people I know who thought that long nights, years of education and brain power were important.
If you want real economic growth, you create goods and provide services, not generate "wealth."
Therefore, I can generate personal wealth by my creation of goods and services that people want to purchase. Nader's view of the world is that if I am successfull at this, I will have to give up most of my earnings. Why should I bother? Why should anyone? Goodbye growth, goodbye economy, hello socialist hell.
I assume by "we" he means the People (although in reality it's the Party).
Uh, we're all People. If Nader were to be elected, you'd just have to be sure you were the "right" people. If you're not in the right group, you'll lose the money you worked hard to earn. His "party" line: If you have wealth, you must have oppressed someone to get it.
I see nothing wrong with using tax as a way to fight this kind of thing.
What kind of thing? Wealth creation? Job creation? Let's make sure no one gets rich. [sarcasm]That will make everyone work hard to get ahead.[/sarcasm]
Forget about your dreams of a beautiful house, vacations, and nice things for your family. Why work hard when the government will tax away 90% of that extra dollar...
I just did a quick search on a couple of my pages. Searches for either "bat house" or "bat poetry" list my pages first. Of course the subject is a bit specialized...:-)
It's never been a problem for me. Under RedHat printtool, I just put in the Name/IP of the network printer, choose the type of printer, and I'm done...
And if you're not running Redhat, all printtool does is add an entry to the/etc/printcap file.
Many people use top and see the amount of memory used by the X server and think that it is terribly bloated, but that's only part of the story. Want to see what my X server looks like under top? (sorry about the format...)
PID USER PRI NI SIZE RSS SHARE STAT LIB %CPU %MEM TIME COMMAND
5422 root 0 0 200M 200M 1100 S 0 0.0 728.5 0:54 X
Obviously my server is not 200 Meg in size and using 728% of my memory. Try running your X server under "strace" and grep for the "mmap" calls. You will likely see the server memory mapping the card's video memory into its address space. So if you have a 64 Meg video card and the server maps it all (or even more as mine does) it will look huge, but counting memory can be deceptive...
I've seen McDonalds all over the world as well, and I don't like it much either. But I make it a point of not buying anthing there. My choice. I always try local places. One exception, I was recently in Saudi Arabia and visited a McDonalds there just to see the difference. It's illegal to sell ham in Saudi Arabia so they sell "BeefBurgers" ! Another difference, it's illegal to have non-related men and women eat together, so the McDonalds has two doors, one for men and one for families. The family section has all of the booths curtained off so the women can eat their BigMac Beefbugers in private.
