Congratulations, you've spotted a local trend. And if there's a local warming trend, there must be global warming trend. It stands to unreason after all.
I buy a computer to run programs. The operating system, Windows, Linux, BSD, or whatever, doesn't make a great deal of difference to me. My programs run, and that's all that matters. I've never gotten a virus on a Windows machine -- helps not to be a moron if you want to avoid that -- in fact, since XP, I've considered it a very decent OS. Windows installs don't break nearly as often as Ubuntu installs for me. (They haven't quite got the hang of testing their automatic updates yet.) But all in all, I find most modern OS's serviceable.
So yes, it does matter to me how fast this machine will run my programs compared to how fast a PC will run them.
The origin of Earth's extremophiles is that of life that evolved from organisms which existed in relatively benign environments, but were pushed into extreme environments through competition. You need someplace where the conditions are right for life to originate (what those conditions might be is still under a very high amount of conjecture), and someplace for that life to evolve long enough to begin taking advantage of the extreme environments.
I've had two Ubuntu installs fubar'ed by bad automatic updates. It's fine for my desktop, but for a server (an RHEL replacement), I'd pick Debian stable any day. Actually I prefer Debian stable over RHEL. I just got through dealing when some major autofs bugs in RHEL 4 -- apparently been there forever -- bind mounts through a program map simply don't work without major hacks.
The real point of this project is to ditch the shuttle while keeping everybody who works on it for NASA employeed. (Guess which is the real albatross.) They could save a lot more money by firing a lot of people.
Assuming a random distribution of digits in pi (and why does everyone assume this? -- there is certainly no proof), the odds are that you'll see one sequence of 4 zeros every 10,000 (decimal) digits. On the other hand, you'd expect to see 4 zeros once every 16 binary digits. Wikipedia, at 100MBs would be expected to be found once every 2^800,000,000 binary digits of pi.
Then again, maybe we're lucky, and this universe is God's way of storing the universal encyclopedia in the digits of pi. Wikipedia might be up near the front somewhere.
The way to tackle global warming is not through using less fossil fuels.
If we're going to tackle global warming, we need to do it the smart way: Huge man-made carbon sinks. This is an engineering problem, folks. Solving the problem can be done on the cheap.
Actually, it kind of does. If Apple makes more money off of giving away their intellectual property and copyrights than from keeping them locked down, it should give them away. "Magically"...well, I don't really get that.
Of course, one also has to be worried that the Windows passwords are easily crackable (http://elliottback.com/wp/archives/2006/04/26/cra cking-windows-passwords-with-ophcrack-and-rainbow- tables/). But I guess that's good when you forget your password.
I haven't clicked on the link, but he's talking about LMHASH passwords. Why don't you look up the last version of Windows that used LMHASH? I am often asked to recover forgotten Windows Admin passwords at work, and I haven't run into an LMHASH password for a long long time.
XP Pro has let you do the same since it was released. Right-click My Documents and tell it to encrypt the folder. Better than being stuck with Steve Job's zealot-ware.
Music downloaders were never sued. Music uploaders were sued. The same will happen with Youtube, because Google isn't interested in getting sued to hell themselves. This will kill Youtube, of course, and Google will have wasted a lot of money on nothing.
Nope, it looks like the obesity is causing it. From the story intro: "The fatter subjects also showed a higher rate of cognitive decline when they were retested five years later."
Oh and why is it that girls sleeping around is no good, but guys sleeping around doesn't get a mention?...Basically the sexual differences between male and female have been blurred now.
It's not culturual, it's biological. Evolution made men and women different creatures with regard to sex. Hint: she doesn't feel the same about that drunken one-night stand as you do.
Morals are public things. Respect for civilization demands they be enforced.
The idea that porn is free speech is a modern foolishness that doesn't date back more than half a century. The people who wrote "Congress shall make no law..." did not consider pornography to be covered under that umbrella. I realize that moral relativism is all the rage, but it's a stupid philosophy that only teenagers, morons, and hippies take seriously.
Our rights of free speech protect, first and foremost, political discussion. If they are extended to cover smut (as they have been), we will see a steady abridgment of the first purpose (as we have seen).
Furthermore, sex in the media is far more influential than murder in the media. (When was the last time you saw somebody killed in a beer commercial?) Sex on television gets people to think differently about sex. Murder on television does not make people more violent.
The current moral situation regarding sex in America and Europe is pretty bad. Girls sleep around, and that's really no good for anybody. (Sure, I get a lot more sex today than I might have in 1930 -- but hell, how much sex you're getting really has a pretty small effect on happiness. Relationships in general really are a lot better with someone who you're actually committed to.)
There was a news story that Reiser was a suspect several weeks ago.
In the office meeting 3 weeks ago, we joked about the advantages of switching to Reiser FS, now that Reiser was going to jail. He'll have plenty of time to work on it, after all.
Buy a cell phone. Call your relatives every hour on the hour to chat about your cats (you do have cats don't you?). They'll hate you for it. (Don't worry, they're family.) They'll stop answering the phone. They'll talk about the old lady going senile. But if you ever miss a call, they'll be there in a heartbeat to find out what's wrong.

NASA is a bloated bureaucracy like numerous other government agencies. I don't understand why you're surprised by the fact.
The real point of this project is to ditch the shuttle while keeping everybody who works on it for NASA employeed. (Guess which is the real albatross.) They could save a lot more money by firing a lot of people.

No. (It would be too inefficient.) There are much better ways. Wikipedia on Carbon sequestration

I don't know. They could...sell hardware maybe? Being a hardware company, you know? Ouch. Fathomed.

Youtube was never going to make any money. Its popularity came from copyright violation, and it still lost money hand over fist.
Google Video is just an unpopular Youtube without the copyright violation. Its #1 function is to waste Google's money.
So the only competition that Youtube offered Google was in the money wasting biz. And now Google has cornered it.

I can only assume that your sarcasm detector has been corrupted by too many Hollywood prison buddy-buddy buddies.
I'd recommend taking a look at the book Efficient C++ for a set of benchmarks comparing the STL to handwritten code.
What color do I make my website for prostate cancer?
You fools! Do you have any clue how much Oracle licenses will cost for this thing?
