I would say that an OS requires following aspects:
- kernel
- a way to create programs for that OS (doesn't mean that you need a compiler, just write your programs with hex-editor)
- user interface to control the OS (can be text, graphical, voice, mindcontrolled)
So if I compile my Linux with Borland C I should call it Borland/Linux..?
I think we should do a fork to whole GNU project and rename it to something nice, eg. THE or even better OS (Open Source) and then we would have Open Source/Linux. Or how about Free/Linux?
Well you could copy it to your harddisk/tapedrive or record it your older VCR (my old LUX vcr ignores macrovision) or make a bit-by-bit copy with your super-haxor-DVD-copying-machine.
Hmm.. A Terabyte fileserver under 5000 bucks, that's easy (unless you are a SCSI freak):
- 180$ for Motherboard ABIT KT7A-RAID
- 138$ for 1GHz Thunderbird
- 130$ for 3 * 256Mt Dimm PC-133
- 71$ for GeForce 2 mx (Overkill for a fileserver)
- 83$ for 10GB MAXTOR (for booting:)
- 38$ for A CD-Rom drive (might be needed when installing OS)
- 51$ for Inter EtherExpress PRO100
- 58$ for HTP370 IDE Raid controller
- 290$ for BIIIG Case
- 2900$ for 10 * MAXTOR 100GB
- 145$ for 10 * IDE Rack (It is nice to have a cooler for each HDD)
Total: 4085$ for Big Ass Fileserver
This leaves us 900$ (plus discount) for extra stuff like gigabit ethernet, monitor, keyboard and mouse etc.
Browsers should by default ignore popup scripts, except when the user clicks a link with eg. CTRL-key. This way all unwanted popups would disappear and users could still use those sites that want to popups in links rather than just linking. Unfortunately these pro-popup sites then would just add onClick="createPopUp();" to their links.
Sure you can write uour passwords without any errors, just practive it a bit. It's easy.. And it also looks cool when you have a 35 chars longs password and you log in with it:) and this message is really written blindfolfed:P
For everybody who thinks WAP sucks or is dead, then you haven't really seen what can be done on WAP. You've probably seen just the crappy shit that most mobile companies put out as WAP services. Want to see the future of WAP as a media platform?? Check out this WAP service:
Yep, comics anytime anywhere you want including archives for missed episodes. Let a newspaper and even a fixed Net try that! OH yeah, and you don't get black ink on the fingers when you read it!
The speed of GPRS is around 28kbps modem on current GPRS networks in Finland (theoretically you should get 56kbps) and there is problems with network latency (average 1,300ms). Currently the pricing if fixed (varying from 30mk/month (5$) to 60mk/month (10$)) but operators will announce their final prices before end of this year. I hope that they won't over price this shit.
Wy bother with customs, just order your DVDs from Play247.com, located at Jersey, they even deliver for free in EU (actually they don't deliver outside EU). IRCC they have a subdiary (or like) in Canada and they send R1(US) movies as internal mail and then mail it from Jersey to customers.
Yep, most DVDs sold here in Finland are really multi-language version, for example Matrix:
Dolby Digital 5.1 audio in English / German
Subtitles in English / German / Italian / Swedish / Norwegian / Danish / Finnish / Icelandic / Dutch / German for hearing impaired.
Fortunately they are only 2 audios so they have all the extras on Matrix, which is nice:P
I have 75 DVD movies and about half of them are R1(US) and rest R2(Europe). The reason for this is the bad quality of European DVDs and by this I mean the content. Half of the R2 DVD have the following extras: trailer and interactive menu. Woah.. The space required for extras is used for 20 different subtitles and for 3-8 different language dubs. This sucks. I want to see the movie with the original language (doesn't have to be English) and with lots of extras, or who wants to see Harrison Ford speaking Italian in Blade Runner.
So I buy DVDs from US and Japan (and have watch them in NTSC, ugh). What law says that I can't buy a DVD or eg. a car from random country X if I pay the customs and taxes? This sucks..
Most of the commercial websites are already so bloated with graphics that no-one would notice if you just change all text to images. And webdesigners would be happy, they could finally create their pages with Photoshop or Freehand.
From what I know, C-64 had two graphics modes, hires 320x200 with 1 background color and 1 foreground color (could be changed per character [40x25]) and multicolor 160x200 that had 2 extra colors, also there was 8 sprites of size 32x32 pixels (hires) or 16x32 (multicolor). With interlacing it was possible to double the vertical resolution and it was possible to mix the 16 colors to 128 colors. C-64 had 3 voice generators with 3-waveforms (square, sawtooth, sine) plus noise, it was possible due to bug in SID to create digitized sounds (4 bit).
Atleast 1 bank works fine without javascript (Osuuspankki), but requires frames (so no lynx:( Second bank i use (Leonia) works with IE, Netscape and Opera (even in psion) but requires some javascript. You can also use WAP or SMS-messages. I've been paying my bills online for about 6 years now...

I have paid my bills online for about 3 years now. And by online I mean by web browser, before that I used a modem and a terminal software.
All major banks in Finland offer online billing and it's actually cheaper to pay your bills online. Security is handled with SSL-encryption, user number, master password and one time transaction passwords.
Remember Commodore 64 and all those sport games like Decathlon, try to run 10000 meters and feel the pain. If you use the original Commodore joystick (triangular stick and nice red button) You probably lose (both the race and some skin) or if You play with a better stick, You'll break the stick (well not the TAC-2).
Hmm.. Delta Force I and II use volumetric pixels, and both look good, but use way too much CPU.. I tried the demo of DF II, but it was too much for my 400 MHz AMD.
Voxels might be the next feature to be added to 3d-accelators. I think SGI already does voxel with hardware...
The Cyrix FPU was poor, as was AMDs. I'm not sure if Cyrix could beat the non-MMX intel chips, but after using many chips I have come to these conclusions..
6510@1MHz is slower than 80286@8MHz
Doom could be played with 80386@16MHz
AMD PR-166 @ 200MHz equals to Pentium 166
Pentium MMX 200 @ 250MHz is faster than Cyrix MII-300 (as a server Cyrix MII-300 was faster)
Upgrading system to AMD K6-II 400 didn't make games more playable (had to buy a new 3d-card)
My friends always have faster computers than I can afford
Cyrix MII is/was amazing with integers, hope that their new CPU is good with FPU too, otherwise they don't got a chance to compete with other chips on the market.
