Not only can any moron do it, but they can be right. ..or at the very least they can make a better point than Darl can. Its like hitting an unarmed man who thinks he's bulletproof and has all the guns!
My other reply to you - where do I sign up for my turn to hit back - everyone else seems to be taking turns. ..an open letter out, and return fire, one by one. . .
The trick there is, if M$ does allow it and (God be praised) endorses it, and it does fail, by then IE will be in such shambles from bad patches that people may be inclined to switch to something that works - and the/. comunity might have an opinion or two on that topic. ..
But if it works - then open source gets a leg up, M$ will have admitted needing help, and (possiblt) eventually IE will *mysteriously* morph into mozzila or the like.
The other option being that M$ will reject it as bad, and be forced to admit that a group who doesn't even have access to the code in question can patch faster than they can. ..
I think I like all three, but then i remember I am running an M$ free envirnment. . .
As one other comment on other animals consuming chemicals, i do know from experience that when earthworms eat coffee grounds, they tend to be firmer and more active. I presume that this is as a result from the caffiene, but i don't really know.
This is a great trick when going fishing that my grandpa taught me - dig up worms, put them in dirt mixed w/ coffee grounds. . . mmmmm.
Be that as it may, the point of the article, I think, is to show how a very powerful, yet compact supercomputer can be built cheaply - The examples from distributed.net can process huge amounts of data, true, but with only 1,100 computers, all in a single building? I am certainly one for open source alternatives, but there are other applications where having your own computing beast is better.
But besides all of that, I think the did it more because they could than anything else.
This may be a stupid question, but why is all of the discussion being had about laptops as opposed to the other apple proucts (i.e. my DP 867 tower)? Is there something specific about running linux distros on an ibook that is that much different than a tower? Or is it just that its so stinking cool to have an apple laptop running linux?
I only ask because I am seeing a ton of discussion concentrated on the laptops, when I would think the same information should work on a tower.
I am thinking that they would not be just floating around waiting to be hacked, but instead something like from ST:Insurection. You know, butterflies wandering around, forcing people to do things they don't want to and capturing the good guys (i.e. slashdot). Or possibly, we will be facing the MSBorg, all ready with a new plan to use one, proprietary operating system. . .
I'm not sure that our good friend Jessie will sign this, 'cause our buddy doesn't believe in the "L" word. We in Minnesota have all discovered this fact by now. For those of you not, uh, privledged, to live under his reign, the word he cannot hear is 'logic'. You see, this bill would simply be too sane and logical, and we can't have that.
This is the same guy who called a press confrence to tell the world that he was running for reelection, then told us it was an April fool.
In English, a similar saying goes - "Those who can, do. Those who can't, teach."
As you say, it could probably be extended to giving direction from the sidlines as well.

Please forgive my ignorance.
Dude, crack kills brain cells. Lay off a bit, and have mercy on us poor waterfoul.
