I understand that although several crashed none were ever *shot* down. That would seem to indicate that they could. Or that nobody ever shot at one. Though that's not true because it's well documented that it has outrun them missiles in the past. Real high and real fast is hard to shoot down unless you've got a real big head start.
It can't outrun modern missiles, hence it's grounding. OK, money was an issue too. Actually, that's false. It COULD outrun modern missiles, unless the missiles had a real good head start. 2200 Knots at 85000 feet. The reason it got grounded is that we've got satellites to do its business now. There's no need to have it up there when we can just direct a satellite to take the pictures.
I heard of stories where the had the fuel in an open container and would drop a lighted match in it, the fuel would not ignite. Don't know the truthienss of the story but it does convey how hard it was to ignite. You can drop a match into diesel fuel and it won't ignite.
good idea but in 48 hours two serious bugs on gmail and chaptcha if ballmer says: developer developer developer actually google say: marketing marketing marketing:D Ok, except for the fact the the Live Mail CAPTCHA breaking event happened weeks before so I'm sure that Microsoft isn't going to throw any stones Google's way anytime soon over that. Also, are we going to call that a "Bug"? Really? A bot being able to sign up for an account is a "bug". Really? A *serious* bug? Really?
I failed to notice where they would help me to reduce any costs. I can already have (for free) everything I saw in this presentation (hosting excluded...And I don't pay this part...My clients do). So you charge your clients for an in house development environment? Where do you do your development and testing? They are offering free hosting and you say "Except for the free hosting, I don't see where I can save money." It's free hosting...that's what it is. I don't think anyone's trying to tell you to go ahead and move over everything you've got on some server somewhere to the google engine but yo...it's free hosting. Fire off a development environment...or whatever.
Thanks but no thanks. How do you not see this for what it is? It's free hosting. That's it. Free hosting with some serious backing. Now it's Python, but how long do you think it's going to be before you'll be able to run J2EE apps and/or php apps? I think it's great. At the very least, it'd be a great place to keep a little development server for the ole web_devel_house. How is it bad? Why do you want to hate right away?
When a person willfully and with wanton soup is wreckless with their car, just because the bank owns the car they don't become responsible for the damages, they are just responsible for thier investment loss in the vehicle (assuming the owner defaults, and most wreckless people will) The bank does not have possession of your car. They have a lien on your car title. They never have possession on your car unless they re-possess it. So, bad example. Plus, do you doubt that the RIAA won't care how those tunes got to your backup tapes?
Who backs up everyones Local drives? Gov? Who *doesn't* backup local drives? Gov?
But it wasn't the companies profile that stored the music. It's pretty reasonable to assume that well, lets see the music is stored under
C:\Documents and Settings\John User\Documents\My Music\Lita Ford Doesn't matter one single bit. Possession is 9/10s of the law. Your file server now has d:\backup\sales_force\docs\John User\Documents\My Music\Lita Ford and so do your tapes. So now, YOU have copied it twice. Not him, YOU. It's bad to let people make their own decisions with your network and hardware when your ass on the line. It always has been and always will be.
Actually, neither you nor GP really know what is civil disobedience. Let me quote it for you:
Civil disobedience, as defined by Gandhi, was: Right dude, we've all got access to wikipedia, and that wiki quotes Ghandi, which is fine I guess, but here's how Webster defines civil disobedience....
Refusal to obey governmental demands or commands especially as a nonviolent and usually collective means of forcing concessions from the government, which I believe does fit the ole tea party. (I'm not aware of any particular violence.)
Plus, Thoreau defined it before Ghandi, and we all know what he considers to be civil disobedience.
Also, the boatload of tea dumped into Boston harbour was hardly a military target. I wouldn't call that an act of war or terrorism either though. More like plain ole civil disobedience.
I willing to play devil's advocate and say that it is a bad thing. Or, at least, the presumption that everything associated with the U.S. government should be kept secret from her citizens. In a democracy, everything paid for by taxpayer dollars should be open unless there is a real national security reason that it should be kept secret. And, I'm not convinced that there was a national security reason for Google to take down those images; it was probably some "cover my ass" action. Really. First off, the US is not a democracy, it's a republic. Semantics I guess. I don't think there's a real good argument out there for a need for there to be "street view" images of a United States military installation. Do you? Do you not see how that could be bad? That would put the level of your stupidity right up there with the guy who approved it in the first place I guess, so you're not alone?
I'm trying to discover how or why this is a bad thing Are you serious? Really? You're trying to discover why having street level view of military bases is a bad thing? Or you're trying to discover why having Google pull it is a bad thing? Either way, the situation and post seem to be fairly evident to me.
The asshat that said "Sure Google, film our military installation all you'd like..." is bad.
Pulling it from google is not bad.
I'm pretty sure that's what you meant. I don't think the poster was trying to imply that google pulling it was a bad thing, merely noteworthy that it got shot in the first place.
Everybody always says about the various platform/language wars, use what you can to get the job done. Since you said "web developer" and not "web developers", I assume the project isn't that large, or at least isn't large enough where you can't afford to do a bit of a re-write. The thing that is more important to me than language and platform, is design. If you have a good design, then refactoring your code_base into a different platform, shouldn't be all that impossible. (Remember, I'm assuming your application/site isn't really really big) And if you don't have a good design, then you need to redesign anyways. Just my two cents though.
Also from TFA:
lthough Haiku is nearly feature-complete, there are still numerous bugs that must be fixed before it is ready for day-to-day use. Kinda reminds me of... um... the BeOS. Wasn't that the major problem with the OS in the first place. Talk about a clone...sounds like it's a clone to me. I'd die laughing if the "numerous bugs" were mostly in the network stack. Tee_hee...makes me giggle just thinking about it.
Actually though, I really loved the BeOS. I had r4-r5_bone and I was really rooting for them. But alas, the "internet appliance" market's call was too strong for good ole Jean-Louis Gassée...you silly frenchman.
Great analagy! Lets work with that. Actually, it's a poor "analagy". A better one would be a software security company figuring out how to keep their clients safe from poorly written software. Oh wait...that's not an "analagy" at all.
Does this mean my DVD Recorder with time-slip infringes on TIVO's patent? That's kinda what the patent says....
Abstract
A multimedia time warping system. The invention allows the user to store selected television broadcast programs while the user is simultaneously watching or reviewing another program. A preferred embodiment of the invention accepts television (TV) input streams in a multitude of forms, for example, National Television Standards Committee (NTSC) or PAL broadcast, and digital forms such as Digital Satellite System (DSS), Digital Broadcast Services (DBS), or Advanced Television Standards Committee (ATSC). The TV streams are converted to an Moving Pictures Experts Group (MPEG) formatted stream for internal transfer and manipulation and are parsed and separated it into video and audio components. The components are stored in temporary buffers. Events are recorded that indicate the type of component that has been found, where it is located, and when it occurred. The program logic is notified that an event has occurred and the data is extracted from the buffers. The parser and event...
I noticed that "I have no experience in the DVR world" came directly before "Seems much ado about nothing to me."
In other news, I have no experience in the medical industry, but antibiotics seem much ado about nothing to me. So...you have nothing to say either I guess. (Nice connection BTW, TV to antibiotics)
I hope that the TIVO patent forces some of the provider companies to take away their service. Because it sucks. Plus, the equipment sucks. As a TiVO zealot, I hated the day that DirectTV gave up their deal with Tivo. Dual tuners that are both recording live tv AND you can switch back and forth at will between streams....yeah...I'll take that over any other DVR box I've seen. I still have a 5 year old DirectTV tivo that I've hacked for more storage and the upgraded features. They no longer provide the dual tuner DVR from Tivo for DirecTV, they have their own. (which sucks)
I hate stupid patents (usually) but this is one that I hope forces Dish and DirecTV back into business with Tivo. Which, I guess, makes me a douche.
This glosses over the actual mechanism of the coercion/intimidation. I think that a lot of people are missing their point here. I live in the south where *a ton* of churchs are charging money to come to the superbowl party. Not for the game I'm sure but for the refreshments and so forth. I'm looking out my window at a sign for a church superbowl party right now. "Tickets available after service"... UGh...
Not to mention the fact that downloading is not stealing, illegal or not.
So I guess then, with your logic, you can't steal one's ideas either, since nobody is deprived property. Sounds like semantics to me.
I'm sure most people do. However, it's still hard to find new laptops without a pre-installed OS. Also, I know there are people buying computers with iCandy installed and replacing it with XP; I'm going to be doing exactly that for a friend later this week. Then you, my friend, are doing your friend a great disservice. I've been running Vista for about a year now, and once I turned off the "Cancel or Allow" annoyance, I've been very happy with the OS. I also run Ubuntu and compiz and I have to say, I've had no problems with either OS. I know Vista is supposed be be a total piece of shit, but I've loved it. To me, it's much more usable than XP. I've been surprised that it's gotten such a bad rap. To me, all that is just FUD.
These days, if somebody just says that their husband hit them, it's over Johnny, he's going to jail.
There ya go. Actually, no. It doesn't matter anymore if it's a man or a woman. If they both say they got hit, they both go. That's where we are now.
I would never hit my wife and I know I'd have to be a much bigger asshole for my wife to hit me, but still...if there is some incident where a neighbor thinks they see something, do I want my reputation to be ruined by accident? I don't think I do.
I think the reverse is true. DV perpetrators tend to have anti-social personality disorder. No, that doesn't mean they are shut-ins. Those with anti-social disorder have little trouble forming relationships, partly because they have no remorse about lying. They are very good about putting on a convincing face, and then turning violent and abusive once the relationship becomes serious. And I hear you, but do we really need to apply public humiliation in that case. I just always wonder if such things can be practiced with any real justice. I just don't think that the government can fairly keep track of the real bad people vs the people who got caught in a lie or some other injustice. I guess the debate is whether such a list can do more unjust harm than good. Can we stop ruining the lives of relatively innocent people while exposing the real criminals for what they are? I doubt it and to me, the risk isn't worth the gains. Plus, the whole slippery slope argument. When do we stop posting lists of "criminals"? At what point do we say "This isn't a sufficiently bad enough crime to have an offender list"? Murder? Home Invasions? Larceny? Speeding?
I know a lot of this information is "public knowledge" but a searchable google maps mashup of people convicted of anything? I'm not sure that's in our best interest.
There's never an excuse to beat up on a woman Clearly, you're not married....
Seriously though, I agree with you because of the room for lies too. These days, if somebody just says that their spouce hit them, it's over Johnny, somebody's going to jail.
I think the Megan's law thing is great and all but it probably needs to stop there. I understand wanting to be safe and all put this goes towards public humiliation. Domestic violence laws are already kinda weird in regards to the situation where often, just the fact that the police get called means somebody HAS to go do jail. I don't think we need this kind of thing for every single violent crime. I think even Megan's law is a bit harsh and needs to be reevaluated since I'm sure, as with all other "Justice", there are a ton of people who's lives are ruined that probably didn't need to be. (ie There was that case in GA where a 17yr old boy got a BJ from a 15 yr old girl and got 10 years in prison and has to walk around with the 'Sexual Predator' moniker for the rest of his life)
Let's leave it rest with Megan's law.

Hey. Stop right there! That was a totally rational, logical and succinct post that didn't totally bash or belittle any political affiliation...
What the hell are you doing here?
The asshat that said "Sure Google, film our military installation all you'd like..." is bad.
