  1. Re:You can't patch console games! on Crashing Xbox Kiosks · · Score: 1

In my opinion, pc games should be the same way. A very very good example of this is when Ultima 9 came out. I bought it I think the day it came out, and of course had many problems. Origin/EA sent me an updated disk that would have all the patches already installed, that way I would never have to worry about patching, just install and play. They also gave me a free account of UO, still have to pay monthly, but it is a good gesture of the company. I think if you buy a game that is fairly bug ridden, the company should have to provide a new updated cd at a later time to everyone that bought the game, so they dont have to worry about patching everytime they install the game to fix the bugs. I know this isn't going to happen, but it might make the marketing people calm down a bit when it comes to release dates, make it so the programmers can actually produce a quality product. It seems with a lot of companies, they dont really give a rats ass about the customer, and just sees them as a way to get more money. I have a much higher respect for console programmers then I do pc game programmers. Im not saying that there aren't any good pc programmers in any sense, but most of the pc game companies ship bug wridden products, and patch later. Consoles pretty much have to get it right the first shot, it is very costly for them to fix after the fact.

So, what your telling me is that you are predicting the future, and there will NEVER be an xbox emulator? I wonder if you shared the same thoughts when the PS1 came out, or the Dreamcast? Those systems dont even use an x86 architecture, yet you can get emulators on your pc for them. I really dont see why someone who knows what they are doing couldn't figure this out. You say its a win2k kernel, with less crap in it, hmm, that doesn't sound like it would be harder to figure out. Anyway, all im saying is that I feel we will probably see this sometime in the future... its been done before, and im sure it will be done again.

If its a usual problem, put a fan in the kiosk, problem solved. Im sure if they knew the xbox would overheat in the kiosk, why would they not put a fan in there? If they knew it were to lock up, wouldn't that kinda scare people away from buying the xbox? I mean think about it...

Hmm.. Emulating newer, more expensive hardware on older systems? Lets say I have a brand spankin new AMD Athlon XP 1800 machine, 1.5gigs of DDR ram, geforce 3 TI 500, id say my pc could run circles around any xbox.. What do you think is in an xbox, some alien technology or something? They are essentially using off the shelf parts to make this thing, and there are much faster "off the shelf parts" you can buy that are faster then the components in an xbox.

On the kiosk i saw, it had a mockup of the Halo box cover, and I believe it said "only on xbox" =(

Im sure we will see halo on the pc, but probably after christmas, and it wont be for any technical reasons, why sell Halo on pc, when its the only good reason to buy an xbox this early. They know if they put it on pc, and the xbox at the same time, they will get less xbox sales.

Why wont my pc play xbox games. It is essentially using off the shelf parts for it, i dont see why it would be hard to build an enviorment where the xbox cd would think its in an xbox. Stranger things have happened. You really cant say it wont happen because it most likely will. You cant say it wont happen because of any special hardware in the box, as it uses something similar to a geforce 3. I would say the only thing standing in the way of this is the content protection built into the cd, but I heard its using a form of DRM, and as we found out, isn't all that secure. By the way, Microsoft has to sell 6 games with each xbox to break even. This next year, MS will probably pump about a billion dollars into the xbox, advertising, makign consoles, etc.. They probably wont see a profit for a while, and thats ok with Microsoft. Their main goal is to get an xbox in everyhouse.. so the upgrade to the homestation wont be that bad.

Ya.. i went to the local Electronics Boutique in Coeur d'Alene, ID, and they had one of these kiosks setup.

Well, first off, the system was not working. It did have power, I hit a reset button on the kiosk and the cd activity/power button light started flashing. They did have a Halo miniposter right under the controllers, giving the impression that you could play halo.

Anyway, the xbox is a big box, much bigger then I expected.. and then theres the controllers.. I would say they could be used better as a type of weapon, morning star or something, as they are huge. I could not keep my hands in one position and push all the buttons with any ease.

Well... I am jealous of you =) I am not a programmer in any sense, but from what I have read, the ps2 has quite a bit of power inside of it, lots of bandwidth, tough to code for because you cant really store textures in video memory, they are streamed to the framebuffer as the game goes on.. etc etc.. Even if it does only support lower resolutions, it has plenty of other uses that make it worth while.

Secondly, I am not sure if you have an extra monitor or not, if you do, then no, you dont have to buy anything.

If you do have a monitor, you could always try a manual monitor switchbox called get off your lazy ass and switch cables around. If thats too difficult, then yes, you might have to spend a few bucks to make your life easier, but if that was your goal, you would probably just use linux on a pc instead.
