Oh, I know. On first glance, you wouldn't think so. Sure there are PLENTY of uneducated bumpkins in WNC. Hell, Buncombe County (Asheville) has an adult illiteracy rate of over 50%!!! But there are still a lot of educated people there. I was quite surprised while living there. Plus the beauty of the area, the opportunities for exercise (hiking, rafting, fishing, etc), low cost of living, etc makes it an ideal place. I don't think I listened to country once while there.:-)
My only question is (and I'm thinking about myself here) whether there are going to be any software development jobs resulting from this. Or just networking type jobs.
I went to university at Western Carolina University and we typically had 30+ students in the CS program. UNC Asheville has about the same. There are also a number of regional community colleges with degrees in IT. There are plenty of educated people in the area who want to stay around home and work there. I am from New England but went to school there. Back then (1999) there was a huge dearth of IT jobs in the area. If something like this had happened then, I'd probably still be there happily.
I gotta tell ya, I loved my Nexus One buying experience! I really like looking at specs on hardware, making my decisions, and then buying online. I suppose that the process itself isn't any different than doing that in a store. But I prefer my shopping online. I did do the T-Mobile subsidy, but I still bought from Google. At the time, the hardware specs were far above any other handset being offered and that was enough for me to buy. Seeing a lesser model in a store but being able to have it in my hands that moment, wouldn't have given me enough warm fuzzies to buy it in a store. I personally liked Googles method and would purchase it again if there was an upgraded model in the future.
Now has MythTV or Linux in general gotten better at playing Blu-Ray discs? That's really what holding me back from giving 0.22 a try (I use Win 7 Media Center now having switched from MythTV over a year ago). I really hate the idea of copying a BD to HD in order to play it.
Plus VDPAU sounds great, but it is really only for NVIDA cards? I'm happy with my ATI Radeon HD. Where's the love for ATI?
In college, I spent a year on an exchange program to the University of Karlsruhe, Germany. It was quite possibly the greatest year of my life. If you go to Germany though, you have to know the language. That was perfect for me as I had studied German for 3 years and it was a great opportunity to better my German. The university system in Germany is very different than it is here (in the US). It is a lot more theoretical but at the same time it's very hands-on.
But more than anything, I bettered myself socially. We can learn about technology anywhere in the world. But getting to know another language and culture and meeting people you never would been able to without going there is an incredible experience. Before you get tied down with kids, a wife, a mortgage, etc., go see the world. But do it for a year. 6 months is not enough. It took me 4-5 just to get acclimated (linguistically and culturally).
Good luck!
Where is it written that we, as Americans, are responsible for the rest of world. The world doesn't want us there, why are we interfereing all over the world. I speak from experience. During a year spent overseas in Germany as an exchange student I had the opportunity to speak to many people about this subject. We're not particularly welcome except in the case where it involves our money.:-)
I agree wth you on Afganistan. It involved American lives. We had a right to retaliate. But Iraq? There was nothing going oon there at the time. And to tell people that you disagree with the President...God help you!!! I was almost burned at the stake several times. American history shows that it is neccessary to disagree with you government if it dooing wrong and more impoortantly to take action (as you pointed out with King George and the colonists).
I'm not sure how I feel about this. I understand what youre saying.
I was laid off as a web developer at the beginning of this mess in March 2001. I was silly and didn't look for a joe job during the 8 months I was unemployed. Then I got a job waitering. This gave me almost nothing for money (in rural North Carolina outside of Raleigh). But it did make me feel better. But after a couple of months of that I ran out of money and benefits and had to move back with the parents in Rhode Island. Anyway, since then I've been working in phone-based customer service. For what I do I get paid well. Everyday I feel unemployed though I make a decent paycheck ($14.50).
I was at the beginning of my career when all this happened. While I am able to pay off debts and save some money, I feel as though I'm wasting time and the best years of my career. I've been doing this for 2 years now as well.
I've also been working as a pharmacy tech part-time. I'm sorry to say that I'm thinking about going to pharmacy school. At least that can't be offshored!!

My only problem is that I'm almost 30 and I am trying to get a house next year. :-) :-(
