  1. ASIN on General IT Books? · · Score: 1

The ASIN is an Amazon.com Standard Item Number. Basically it's their UNID.

The area immediately after that number is where an affiliate program would put their id (i.e. http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0596000278/ ashaforeducation/103-6287484-7053449

I agree with diagnosis of 'no conspiracy'. It would have been a great idea, though

Eventually the FCC in it's finite wisdom will sell off all but a 5hz spectrum to the corporations.

    [Sometime next week]
So, I stagger out of bed in the morning and the motion detector in my room sets off the coffee machine, but a random bounce of the signal turns the TV in the kids bedroom on. Damn. Now the little brats are awake. I scurry to put them back to bed, but the phone rings next door and turns on my TV and swiches the channel to one of the thirty Lifetime channels. Crap. One of the kids, who is out of bed at this time calls grandma on the video phone, but it also turns up her automated medication to coma-inducing levels.

When she wakes up, I don't think the kids will be getting any Christmas presents again.

Why not remove the signs that are ineffective? What could it hurt? A person with any semblance of common sense would follow most the guidelines, and if they don't then all we lose is a future cast member of Springer

-Create seat-belt optional rides? The hilarity would never end.

-The signs warning those with heart problems and pregnant women? You'd think that they should know better. Rip that one down

-Keep the height restrictions signs. It serves to humble the short ones out there.

Our litigant society knows no bounds. Too many things have metaphorically rounded edges for fear of a lawsuit. It gets depressing.

  4. The cable companies are supposed to lose money on Will Cable Unplug the File Swappers? · · Score: 1

Publically traded cable companies do not want to make a profit. Seems a bit strange, but the cable industry does not have many similar industries out there. As long as they do not turn a profit, they do not have to pay taxes. IMHO this puts them at a disadvantage whenever discussions about profitability come up. I don't deny the fact that they are probably losing money in the broadband arena. But if your business model revolves around debt, you will not be yelling too loudly when you're turning a profit. I have trust issues with a strategy like this and I would rather check out the companies' annual reports than taking the word of some of their PR drones.

  5. Re:Changing the original? on Ultima 1 Remade & Reborn · · Score: 1

It's an interesting concept, although I think the time might be better spent developing original content rather than rehashing a classic. I liken it to someone rewriting Tolkien. It's been done and it's a good work, but it's just not the same.

Artists take liberties with their works, and unfortunately Ultima may suffer that fate.

I believe the most appealing things from the old games are the dated graphics and technology. To remember what used to be cutting edge and how much you enjoyed it back then is one of the best parts of the experience.

Of course the thought of trying to get Space Quest I to run under Win2000 is enough to make me trust my memory instead of spending the time and aggravation in order to relive it
