Well, points breed points. If I try to post something insightful, I'll get walked all over because they have the mindset "Once a troll, always a troll." If you try to be an asshole, they immediately assume that because you've gotten points before, you deserve them now.
Just be a complete asshole, that usually does the trick. Make it very clear that you are being a prick, give them no room to think you're funny.
Dude, that's going to be rough. Do it too quickly and you end up in -1 hell. Do it too slowly, and it takes weeks to make it down to a reasonable level again. Of course, you could go buck-wild and try to make it down to like -20 or something, but that would take some fast trolling. 4 comments modded down in like 24 hours = 72 hour ban! I don't remember what exactly the time-frame is, it's been a while since I've seen it.
Understand that once you sign up for your very own account, you will have to suffer through several down-mods before you earn your Trolling Badge. After those down-mods, you'll have to wait 72 hours before you can begin trolling again. Once you can though, it's pretty much all good from there, so long as you're posting at -1 by default and you don't get bitchslapped.
From my understanding, every day is a trolling day. However, every Tuesday is set aside as "Troll Tuesday." These days are used to bring trolling and crapflooding to a fevered pitch, spotlighting the Troll's unique contribution to the Slashdot community.
To contribute, one need not be a logged in user. However, to be one of the proud, you need an account dedicated to the pursuit of quality trolling. While it is best to use a generally derogatory login, any login will do. For example, neither Cyborg Monkey nor Sunken Kursk are obvious troll accounts, but are still perfectly acceptable to use. On the other end of the spectrum, TrollMan 5000 and Dead Penis Bird leave little question of the intent behind their accounts.
So, to review. "Troll Tuesday" was set up for trolls to exert themselves, and the way to (proudly) participate is to set up an account and start trolling.
