I don't understand why the solution "some parts of the universe are made of matter, other parts of antimatter" is rarely discussed. If some galaxies were entirely made of antimatter, would we even notice ?
True story: at work (in the US), we'd all pile up in a few cars to go out to lunch. One day we get in the car of our new hire and she steps on it in reverse to get out of her spot. Someone blurts: "Don't you look before reversing ?!?". Her: "And how do you suggest I do that ?". "Well, either turn around or look in the mirror...". "Nah, they do that in the movies !"
Agree. I've written bootloader code and kernel drivers. All the bootloader really has to do is get the kernel in memory somehow and jump to it. Why can't you boot directly into the kernel you ask ? One reason is size; on many (embedded) systems, there are only a few Kb available for an executable on boot. The other is that the bootloader doesn't not change easily (it needs reflashing or is in some kind of ROM), allowing you to easily change the kernel.
It all depends how this immortality thing is implemented. If it's just 'stop aging', yeah, you'll die at the first serious accident. But if it's 'mind backup' with re-uploading into custom bodies, there need not be any limit. Go ski Everest. If you die, you spawn right back.
Without death, there's no evolution possible as one generation can no longer replace the previous one. Immortality would be death of the specie (*), just the same as when cells become immortal we call it cancer and the organism dies. If it happened at once society would collapse as children would no longer inherit (and be able to afford a house), you'd no longuer be able to replace your boss at work, and indeed never get a job because nobody would move up the corporate ladder... A pretty good novel about that: The Postmortal by Drew Magary.
(*) A justification is that an immortal 'specie' stays static. If another similar specie keeps evolving, it'll eventually outcompete it and beat it to death.
Want longer life spans ? Very simple: start breeding later in life and let evolution sort it out.
I was about to ask the same question. I shat for a year in a 'burner'. It took some practise and self control to get used to piss and shit separately. But also that shit-burner (a resistor in our case), stank to all hell. Normally the smoke would go outside in a chimney... Until it froze. Imagine having the smell of cooking shit all over the building. I had to rappel down the building in -65C temperatures to fix the chimney ! Complete story here.
Communism was a religion alright. It has its messiah (Marx), its holly book, its apostles (Lenin, etc), its saints (Stakhanov, etc), its groupthink, its fierce opposition to competing religions, its clergy (politburo, etc) and you can find a lot of other common things. As for Lenin having no idea what kind of evil would spring up, neither did Jesus or Mohamed I'm pretty sure.
Similar to that, there was a case where a lawyer convinced a doctor to claim that something (1) was causing something (2), and cash in by suing the manufacturers. I'm pretty sure that it was (1) aluminum and (2) Alzheimer, but I can't find it now. They were both disbarred and jailed for fraud. Anyone recalls the story.
Yeah, when I learned of the wholesale destruction of _all_ the Mayan codices by a catholic bishop, I wanted to raze the Vatican to the ground. They not only conquered the land and committed genocide but they also wipe out all traces of literacy. I really wonder what _more_ you could do to a people.
It's more like "Discover (verb): To let EVERYONE know about it.". So even though several waves of Asian populations, the Vikings, the Oceanians and most likely the Basque got there first, the better braggers were the white.
I've upgraded plenty of people from XP to Kubuntu. The interface is sufficiently similar. Just rename a few icons to familiar names and you are all set.
Why? I have one or 3 software that are Windows only. I run them on Linux in a WinXP virtual machine. XP because it makes for a much smaller VM and the user interface is just simpler. Why, oh why, should I need to use a more recent version ? I don't even need antivirus on it since I litterally run only ONE program on it and it's certainly NOT IE. If I'm being forced to upgrade, it's not going to go down well which is why I'm looking at other options such as ReactOS, Wine, etc...
Anybody cares to explain to me how an exchange work and how anything can be stolen at all ? I would expect the bitcoins to be in your wallet on your PC, then when you want to cash in you send some to an exchange and get $ in return a short while later. Same for the other direction: the bitcoins are only there in transit. So why do people _leave_ bitcoins at the exchange ?!? There should be hardly anything at all there.
For the written part, you are right, but who knowns about when it was only oral stories ? Some word gets replaced by another because it sounds the same and no one alive remember what the original word means anyway... Rinse and repeat for 2000 years.
Also the varieties are often different. Instead of having the choice of 3 apples with a shelf life of a month, you have a few more which have different tastes (often better) and also grown closer to home.
So there is little to no leading away from the originals until it started getting translated into other languages from translated versions.
But also consider the evolution of languages. There is as much difference between the english of now and that of Chaucer than between the latin of the fall of the roman empire and that of the start of the roman republic. In other words they cannot comprehend each other. And that is about one THIRD of the time between when those bible stories originated and when they were put down on goat skin. So even with perfect memorization (hah!), most terms would have changed meaning or have their meaning completely lost and replaced by something _thought_ equivalent.
Much better system: tax it in reverse to the time it is held. Something like 10 years 0%, 1 year 5%, 1 hour 50%, 1us 90%.
I already had my mind blown when active mirrors managed to get rid of turbulence. But this is another thing entirely, getting rid of diffraction !?!
I don't understand why the solution "some parts of the universe are made of matter, other parts of antimatter" is rarely discussed. If some galaxies were entirely made of antimatter, would we even notice ?
Oh come on, that was funny. You usually have more insightful things to contribute...

Maybe when you are poor (=ethnic) you can't afford as many lessons before trying the test, hence a higher fail rate.
I hope the /. wannabes that'll spring up when beta goes into production will enforce the explicit declaration of all acronyms in the summary...
Besides, ACPI is complete overkill for booting.

Tell that to religious people and their 10 kids. Actually if you become immortal, what of paradise and hell ? Do they just shut down ?

Hell, I'm not smart enough for Garfield.
And I'm clearly not smart enough for the Family Circus... I never even got one.

When those 'freedoms' negatively endanger millions of people, yes, of course, there should be a price to pay.

Somewhat similar to this, The Forever war by Joe Haldeman
