People go to the police because they are the only ones in our society who are given the right to use force and spy on people, not because we think they are the most qualified for helping us with our problems.
Convincing people that going to the moon was a hard sell. I wonder how they would react to the idea of dissassembling the entire universe so that the solar system can go nomad.
Art is not modular like code. You can mash-up code from 20 different coders and still get something that works well. If you did that with art it would look terrible because you would not have a consistent style.
Interesting. Yes, It would come from your breakfast.
66% of Americans are overweight by 20 pounds or more. 20 Pounds = 70,000 calories or about 300,000 joules. 300,000,000 people * 0.66 = 198,000,000 198,000,000 * 300,000 = 59,400,000,000,000 joules
And that's.. Only about 456,923 gallons of gas. A drop in the bucket.
Not surprising considering it takes about 196,000 pounds of plants to make a gallon of gasoline. So much for using humans as batteries.
It depends if you believe the government is working towards your interests or not. Since paying taxes is not optional, I'm sure most people would agree that they do not.
Sure, most linux users won't touch a line of source code. The benefit comes from being able to re-compile the binaries to work optimally with your own system.
Would you buy a car that had it's hood locked shut so that only authorized dealerships could open it?
Use nVidia. They make a better product, have better support and happier customers. This is especially true for linux users, but I find it true in general.
During WWII the UK used Carrier Pigeons to deliver plans. The Nazis got wise and gave orders to shoot pigeons on sight.
Although the UK had some rather nasty ideas of their own: "A thousand pigeons, each with a two ounce explosive capsule, landed at intervals on a specific target might be a seriously inconvenient surprise."
It turned out pretty weird though. When all the children in the community are raised communally, they all view each other as if they are biological brothers and sisters and don't really get attracted to each other. Most of them ended up marrying "outsiders".
Also: "When we saw our first children in the playpen, hitting one another, or grabbing toys just for themselves, we were overcome with anxiety. What did it mean that even an education in communal life couldn't uproot these egotistical tendencies? The utopia of our initial social conception was slowly, slowly destroyed."
Is it any stranger than associating "communism" or "socialism" with bad things? The ideals are generally good natured, it's the context attached to them that has become corrupt.

It also wouldn't be slashdot without the 'It wouldn't be slashdot ...' guy.
I hear he liquefies all his food in a blender because he considers chewing inefficient.

See my xterm? It's Eggshell. With romalian type.
You just described Jerry Garcia...
Music is way different. Writing music is actually very similar to coding.
Snow White could not have been made over the internet for free because you could not maintain stylistic control.
Also, Art has a very specific purpose in mind. It can't be reused easily. Where else are the 7 dwarves going to be used other than Snow White?
Software algorithms can be reused for all sorts of things.

Oops. Multiply that by 10.

If you pay taxes you work for the government =)
"Maybe my social security number is on these tapes?"
Would they have handled it any differently if it was?
I don't get your analogy. Are you suggesting there aren't any open-source alternatives?

Well, considering it has a "pull-string power charger", one could argue that the laptop is actually fueled by porn.

Uhm. Not one person on slashdot has said anything positive about wal-mart.
You are just the kind of dog that likes to pee inside the house I guess.
Israel came pretty close with their kibbutzim.

Them: So you don't like Children? Why not?
You: Because criminals use vulnerabilities in children to conduct their illicit affairs.

In otherwords: There are those who like to watch frankenstein dancing at a Cher concert and those who don't.
Really hard. Really really friggen hard. DARPA has been working on this problem for a long time and we are still way far off.
Aircraft have virtually no obstacles to get in their way. Tanks have to worry about getting stuck on weird terrain.
