The point is if you're going to release hardware. Release proper drivers for it. Whats the point in having a nice card that just sits there?

I think it was a rather smart move. I also think that it wasn't done because of the DOJ or the countless lawsuits pending. However I do believe that what he states as him going back to what he loves is true. He's not stepping down because he wants to. He's stepping down because he has to. He has no choice. He hasn't been involved with the everyday dirty work of the OS nor the many other MS products. As "software CEO" he can fiddle in the dirty work. This isn't a move that will make MS less of a threat. With this small stepping down expect to see some suprising things from Microsoft.

Not only that but when the shit does hit the fan he's got a fall guy. By the time it's all over he'll re-emerge with new "innovative" technology. Everyone will be wowed. Microsoft is back on the map and he's got his battleship again.

Slashdot has now becomea site for news. Technical related news and less of a site that deals with Linux at all. Patents/Laws/Tech News/Rants disgusied as news. It's pathetic.

Shall we proceed with a background of Slashdot and who Slashdot tries to cater to? This is one of the problems I have with reading Slashdot. It was founded in the Linux community yet when someone posts about a problem they see with hardware/software with its own respects to Linux they are blasted with replies as such.

I don't care if you use Linux or not. In fact I don't care what you use as it is unimportant to me. However if Slashdot is to cater to the Linux community you shouldn't see a problem with such posts. I wasn't aware that this was a universal end all website. Maybe I should start reading elsewhere for linux related material.

It seems that as more *nix/linux/bsd people post about their experiences and how a company and or person affects our community we offend the "other".

With that I plan to make that the last time I read Slashdot. It has become something I don't wish to be a part of any longer and will explore other options; if any. Sad.

Hell, I would of been rid of the card if SuSe didn't release a free X server for it. Enough ranting

In simple, why support something that you can't use? Yeah "you gotta get one of those" but what are you gonna do with it? The holidays are over so hanging it on your tree as an ornament would be rather redundant.

That's not true. The standards that you are talking of and the standards that the DOD(etc) are talking of have two different meanings. The standard that they are talking of is a BASIC standard what can be installed without any reference to superior officers or the DOD itself. Basically its just a way of getting something to use in the event that there is nothing else. You won't have to petition your commander to install the standard crap. However you really need to check out your local DOD installation army/navy whatever may have you. The navy might use NT for automatic stuff on their ships but alot of the servers used are *NIX systems. They take a little bit more effort to deploy and that's why things like Linux/Unix in general need to be petitioned to be used. In fact the ARNG just switched their janus system over to Linux. You might want to check some of that stuff out.

Heh, good rebuttable. Its sensible, very sensible but there is the flaw in its operation. First off the comparison of the statement "Windows 2000 is the best operating system in the world" isn't very good for an example. Practical but not very useful. It's not expected that every potential user would then go out and compare hurd, linux, bsd, beos(etc) to Windows 2000. However the user based on prior experience will be able to tell if 2000 is useful to him/her and if its the best or not based upon his/her uses of it. If the user hasn't used 2000 at all then for him/her to take a stand or foundation on the question of it being the best in the world is ludicrous. Not only that but IF it happens to be the best in the world a user that has had umpteen crashes with the system would most likely be skeptical of the statement. (Yes I pose extreme variables with the word USER because their are many different types of users). The user then might query of another viable operating system or whatever happens to be the topic of FUD in general.

I do understand where you are coming from though. Having a site up that knocks the statements of what suchandsuch(tm) says to make sure its not a bunch of falsities is good. It's how its gone about which makes the difference. Sites such as KMFMS (hope thats right) provide good information and I don't believe the Counter-FUD label is a good name for it. It reviews Microsoft's practices and what is true, to the user. Its not Countering Fear, Uncertainty and Doubt.

Personally I think that we shouldn't be wasting our time. Microsoft is very harmless to us. Let them spout off whatever they want. I mean look at it this way if someone from the scientific community said they had found the cure for AIDS they'd be reviewed by their peers. We already do that. If Microsoft says that it's OS supports this and that and it doesn't Users who want to use this and that will know and it'll definitely be something thats made public.

Using the M16-A2 simulator (which runs linux) We learned how to shoot the weapon and control our breathing, aim, steadiness and trigger pulls. There were alot of people coming in with the impression that just because they've played Quake/Doom millions of times that they'd have no problems and those were the head ones that couldn't hit a single target. IMHO I believe that we shouldn't blame the games but rather place blame on the interaction of these children with their parents. Children just don't play quake and become obssessed with shooting someone. If that was the case then humans could easily be controlled by impulse; Its the parents and the time that is spent with the child. You can easily look at all these incidents and call out one factor. These kids spent egregious amounts of time playing the game. They weren't receiving any other stimuli for the most part. Very little human interaction and then the parents want to blame the game? No; sir/ma`am. We need to stop blaming what isn't there. Kids don't turn into cold blooded killers overnight people. Its a process. Thats in general my two cents.

Oh btw if they feel disgruntled and you have a couple credit card numbers in that email expect to be making calls to your credit card company soon.
This is what it all boils down to.

Lets look at it from an everday joe schome user situation. And a joe schome is gonna believe whatever TRUSTe has to say especially if its backed by major corporations.

McCarthyism? I have no clue what it has to do with this at all. Senator Joe McCarthy blamed people in Congress for being communist he didn't blame the actual communist. We aren't blaming the major corporations for doing what we know they will do. We are blaming TRUSTe for being an advocate for it all and pulling the wool over the consumers eye.

Ok maybe twice when the east coast had the floyd incident and they went down for about 30 or so minutes. Thats it though. I love the service and if they offered cable service I would go with them. They claim to have been around since 1976 I believe it is. Don't quote me on that check the website. Not only that but my service is never slow. I'm on a 33.6 and I've never connected at anything under 31200. I know alot of people might have had different experiences with them but for me (I'm in the New York Tri-State Area) the service has been a breeze and I plan to stay with them until I switch to cable. Anyway to slide off topic a bit; I don't feel that accessing the internet should be restricted to an operating system; even if its an operating system of the masses. Also before you go switching ISP's I'd recommend looking at their history, their service, what they offer and find a couple of users that use it and find out their opinion. (Worldnet) the provider that I used before Erols, wasn't as good with connects and they offer 19.95 for 100 hours only I believe.

Anyway in closing make sure that you ask "Do you support my operating system?" If they say no, you know exactly what to do. Say "Goodbye".
