  1. Counter-escalation in Hillsbrad on a PvP server on Gamers Don't Want Grief · · Score: 1

Counter-escalation in Hillsbrad is why I joined a RPPvP server. Doing a quest the third, fourth, twentieth time could get boring, except you must stay alert for the really smart enemy.

  2. Responsible Laziness on Code Reading: The Open Source Perspective · · Score: 1

Responsible laziness is key here. Be responsible enough to comment unclear code; but be lazy enough to prefer rewriting the code for clarity to banging out a comment.

My best C++ code has no comments. All the names are pronouncable and meaningful. The code is just as readable as a comment would be, but it can't get out of date with the code like a comment does.

I make an exception for class-level comments giving the code context in the program; those are good.

  3. Plausible Explanation on Star Wars Episode 3 Play-By-Play In Pictures · · Score: 1

Luke and Leia could feel Padme by using the force. Emotions, e.g., sadness at the betrayal of their father, would of course be the strongest felt and most easily assimilated by an unborn child.

  4. Avoid 7-zip on Slashback: Zip, Language, Opportunism · · Score: 0, Troll

7-zip achieves such good compression in part by losing information. Try compressing a directory tree with same-named files in different directories and you'll see what I mean.

  5. VNC is typically more useful on Cygwin's XFree86 4.2.0 on Windows XP · · Score: 1

Granted, X11 on Windows is very cool. However, you should consider how (un)stable your Windows box is. Do you really want all your Unix apps dying when your X display goes down with your Windows box? If not, consider VNC.

VNC lets you run an X server on your Unix box that you can connect to remotely from just about any platform, including Windows. When the client dies, the server just keeps on running; the mouse cursor is even in the same spot you left it in.

  6. Bad assumptions on Bootleg Movies for Download · · Score: 1

While I agree that it is wrong to break copyright law, I think your rationale is ridiculous. You are assuming that those 1,000 people would have gone to see it in the theater, but now will not.

If I had the opportunity to view a stolen movie on a teeny computer screen, it would be instead of renting it, not instead of viewing it on the big screen. Why do you think Disney re-released The Little Mermaid to theaters? Because people want to see a good movie on screens more than 80", with surround sound!
