13" Retina MacBook Pro 2.5GHz Core i5 8GB RAM 128GB SSD 7 Hour battery Can run OS X, Windows, or Linux $1,499
Seems to me that extra $200 gets you a LOT more bang for your buck. And if you don't care about the display then that same cash gets you a much better hardware spec'd laptop from many other places.
On a Jailbroken iOS device you can also install "ProTube" which will play any video regardless of the uploader disallowing mobile playback (complete with a humorous "The content author has disallowed mobile playback. Click here to play anyway" message). It also allows for downloading of videos, or even just the audio.
He's actually quite right, it's not fanboy'ism to recognize Apple has top noth engineering and build quality, whew as the Blackberry Bold...is kinda a piece of shit.
If you actually paid any attention to those Google results you'd see they are just using the iDevice as external USB storage and then booting using desktop hardware connected to the iPad.
The other result was a proof of concept that consisted soley of a a YouTube video and was never released and probably fake.
The current iPad boot loaders are locked down *tight* and have yet to be hacked in any meaningful way. The same is true of the iPhone 4 and up. In fact, I believe the last iOS device who's boot loader was completely defeated was the iPhone 3G (which is why it is the only iOS device which supports an unofficial Android port).
Does it load a different interface dependent on device! Or doesn't look the same across all? If so, it's a very very iOS looking design, at leas the top menus. Just strange for a site that Rae's against Apple so much...
I've hated Flash long before I ever owned a Mac or iOS device, but this is Slashdot, assume away and continue to wonder why this site has faded into obscurity compared to what it once was. I've been on Slashdot a long time and remember when it used to be about cool hacks and people helping one another. Now it's nothing but week old stories and fanboy'ism.
You could just stop a few months / years ahead of your actual destination, and then continue using traditional propulsion for the last leg of the journey? Would still be much faster.
I haven't had Flash installed for years now, and doesn't seem like I'm missing anything. Most video sites (including YouTube or pr0n have options for loading an HTML5 video player, or will do so if they detect an iOS device.
Get a Retina MacBook Pro.
Lets compare:
13" Chromebook Pixel
1.8GHz Core i5
4GB RAM
32GB Storage
5 Hour battery
Only runs Chrome
$1,299
13" Retina MacBook Pro
2.5GHz Core i5
8GB RAM
128GB SSD
7 Hour battery
Can run OS X, Windows, or Linux
$1,499
Seems to me that extra $200 gets you a LOT more bang for your buck. And if you don't care about the display then that same cash gets you a much better hardware spec'd laptop from many other places.
The 13" Macabook Pro Retina starts at $1499.
http://store.apple.com/us/browse/home/shop_mac/family/macbook_pro
For that you get:
2.5GHz Core i5
8GB RAM
128GB SSD
And out of the box you can run OS X, Windows, or Linux.
So for $200 more than a Chromebook you get 4x the storage, and an actual OS and apps.
Seems a no brainier to me, assuming you HAVE to have a super HD display.
Sad part is they already have. No way Minecraft on Xbox 360 or iPhone/iPad is using Java.

Well, you can always use Khan Academy on your tablet or phone - no flash needed.
To be technical, if jailbroken devices count you can compile just fine on the device.
Um hate to break it to you but iPhones and iPads do in fact use gorilla glass.
It has nothing to do with it "being shiny".
Engineering and build quality matter.

The point was parent was claiming the "Linux Desktop is doing quite well". And it just isn't. At least not in the way implied.
Yeah, 1.64%! The year of the Linux desktop is here!

Actually, not true.

Parent said Linux on iPads, and you respond with Linux on Mac Laptops/desktops.
Who's the troll?
Yeah, I'm sure there is much demand for a heavy tablet with 4 hour battery life and no cellular connectivity that costs $900.
What if I have expired registration, etc?
Denier of reality, much?
...but I blame GMail for that.
Considering Safari on my iPad opened the link fine I assume no one here will have a problem with that link on pretty much any browser/device.

You're going to defend Android typically abandoning users after maybe one OS update, if that?
There are man reasons to roll out updates that have nothing to do with "iOS is locked down LoL".
API updates, security updates, new OS features. And a once a year, free update to devices up to 3 years old is being much kinder than the competition.
You know what time it is.

How is it not 'fair'? Android can't give users the side loading choice and at the same time claim 'its not our fault!'.
