  2. Rule 11 on When Do You Really Need a Lawyer? · · Score: 1

IANAL, but I would argue a Rule 11 against this a-hole for even bringing this suit against you. A quick summary of Rule 11 of the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure is that the person bringing the suit has to have evidence that this lawsuit is not frivilous and will not be dismissed. This could get you a quick summary judgment. Just some friendly advice.

    Good luck

  3. Joining a release group on Talk To a Convicted Warez Guy · · Score: 1

This story is getting a bit old, but I haven't seen this particular question asked. A lot of people are asking "why join a release group", etc. However, I think another question is, How do you join a release group? It seems to me that the entire scene is clouded in some secrecy. You have the fserve on IRC that any 13 year old can set up, you may have some rooted XDCC bots spitting out fast serves, but the uber-elite group, the ones releasing the warez are NEVER seen on IRC, or anywhere else for that matter. So my question is, how did you join DoD? Did they come to you, did you seek them out, what sort of process was involved? And how were new members recruited?
Thanks, and be careful in prison, I don't envy that you're going there. Good luck

  4. Compiling all your apps, are you serious... on A Linux User Goes Back · · Score: 1

So far I haven't seen this mentioned, and this article is getting old, so hopefully somebody will see it.
I tried switching over to Linux, got the latest Mandrake distro, got through a very easy install, no problem. Then I wanted to add some software to my very nice KDE interface. Since I didn't have 'net connection for my Linux machine, I DL'ed the Linux versions of OpenOffice, Mozilla, and a few others. Then came the point to install everything. Ack!! I'm not a programmer, I've never compiled anything in my life, and I sure didn't want to start when I simply wanted to install OpenOffice. This was the main reason that my Linux install didn't last, for the simple reason that installing apps requires compiling code, there's no setup.exe. Call me a newbie, call me a simpleton, but I simply do not have the desire to start compiling everything that I want to install. Before that changes I'll be dorking around on my Win2K machine, thank you very much.

I see you've never heard of an ISO copy. I've warezed quite a few of the latest games, and they were exact duplicates with a cracked .exe to get around the SafeDisc or whatever they use. Sure, there are still ripped versions of the game out there and you won't get the music, FMV, talking, etc etc, but with an ISO version you can't tell the difference.

It interesting you mention this. I'm in Chicago, and there's a Virgin Megastore on Michigan. Normally, I avoid the damn thing like the plague, but I saw an interesting advertisement in the window. 2 CD's for $25, or 2 DVD's for $20. That's right, the CD's are MORE expensive, and for the life of me, I can't figure out why. I looked at the selection for both, and it was pretty limited for both. The tech is newer for DVD, there is more info, you get more (I think), and yet costs less. And they wonder why people aren't snatching up the CD's!!

But don't you see, this isn't solving anything. Sure, you may get a few laughs out of it, but what have you accomplished besided maybe offending some security guards sense of decency/morality? Not a thing. The searches will still be performed and instead of making a constructive effort to change things you're making light of something that could be a serious problem. I think a better approach would be to get others on your side, and then approach the bosses with how you, the employees, see this matter. Don't just fuck around with big dildos, do that on your own time in your bedroom.

There is an interesting project going on over at www.webarchivist.org, whereby they are trying to gather and archive all the sites relating to 9/11/01, with special interest to personal and non English pages. This is only something that can be done on the 'net, and can easily be viewed by the public. I'm sure CNN et. al. has an archive, but that's only their footage and probably will not ever be seen by the general public.

I completely agree. I've been a Microsft user for some time, and over time have become more and more agitated with them. The reason I haven't made the transition yet is simply because I'm not sure how. I would be a total newbie to the scene, and after checking around, the most frequent answer I get is RTFM. OK, where do I get TFM? Linux should be a viable option, but it needs documentation backing, and some type of support that is not IRC/Web/Book based, like being able to talk to a human every now and again. Not everybody here has a CS degree and knows 15 different coding languages.
