I found a more disturbing hidden message in the description of this cartoon: The cops showing up at the kid's house seemed to be used to make the watching children afraid of the authority they might anger if they use these services: REMEMBER KIDS, NEVER PISS OFF THE GESTAPO!
These corporations violate our Free Speech rights and shut down our networks, then they jack up the price of their CDs to pay for their legal bills! Of course, a large portion of the 15$ pricetag goes to the research and development of CD-copy protection.
I say, who cares? We're not doomed to be consumers, why should we follow the will of a dying economy! Let them waste their money on useless legal battles, we've got enough Napster clones to last us at least 2 years. It's their problem if they can't adapt the the new marketplace, but instead place useless restrictions on "intellectual property" .
The more they attempt to constrict this nation's free flow of information, the more talanted individuals will see the situation for what it truly is and begin to develop new ways to distribute and extract data.
I partially agree with you, violence should never follow violence, but the people who are responsible for this have to be apprehended. Even though I'm hardly a military expert, I think that the correct response to this atrocity would be a small, coordinated attack, backed by solid military intelligence (something that has been rather lacking) on whatever organization (if it in fact is a terrorist group) was responsible.
If you don't think was a declaration of war, I don't know what you would consider one to be. And I'm certain you would feel very differently if someone you knew was in those buildings.
This SSSCA insanity reminds me of a quote from Cid Meier's awsome game, Alpha Centauri:
"As the Americans learned so painfully in Earth's final century,
free flow of information is the only safeguard against tyranny.
The once-chained people whose leaders at last lose their grip on
information flow will soon burst with freedom and vitality, but
the free nation gradually constricting its grip on public discourse
has begun its rapid slide into despotism. Beware of he who would
deny you access to information, for in his heart he dreams himself
your master."
Couldn't have said it better myself...=)
