  1. Re:In your face, uptight toolbag moderator on More on the Swedish Stealth Ship · · Score: 1

    Ah yes, the moderation system.

If you post something at +1 that everyone hates, your post ends up at -1. Net karma: -2

If you post something at +1 that half the moderators think is funny, and half the moderators think is overrated, your post can bounce up and down perpetually, with only the negative votes actually counting toward your karma. If you get 100 mod-ups for being funny and 100 mod-downs for being overrated, net karma: -100.

If you were at the karma cap before, now you're down below most trolls and crapflooders, and can only post twice a day, assuming your IP hasn't been banned.

  2. I just don't see it on On Videogames And Inherent Political Bias · · Score: 2, Interesting

Considering the number of games where your character is fighting against an evil corporation -- or a future dystopia full of evil corporations -- I don't exactly see a bias toward lower government regulation.

I have seen environmental alarmism in a number of games, as well as some over-the-top examples of pushing multiculturalism, animal liberation, and a few other social causes. Nothing too extreme or preachy though, and certainly less than the biases you can find in movies and typical entertainment TV. More the kind of thing that unintentionally comes from the story creator's own worldview rather than an overt attempt to infuse a political message into the game.

On the other side, it sure seems like most games aren't in favor of gun control!

Yeah, and the game's political agenda already tilts left. You've got the white guilt-inducing natives with smallpox mission, and the mission where you murder 30 zookeepers to free 4 animals and it's considered an act of good. They coulda tossed gay prostitution in the mix too.

  9. Re:If you think on Bill Gates On Linux · · Score: 1

This sounds like some other math I read once:

"OpenBSD leader Theo states that there are 7000 users of OpenBSD. How many users of NetBSD are there? Let's see. The number of OpenBSD versus NetBSD posts on Usenet is roughly in ratio of 5 to 1. Therefore there are about 7000/5 = 1400 NetBSD users. BSD/OS posts on Usenet are about half of the volume of NetBSD posts. Therefore there are about 700 users of BSD/OS. A recent article put FreeBSD at about 80 percent of the *BSD market. herefore there are (7000+1400+700)*4 = 36400 FreeBSD users. This is consistent with the number of FreeBSD Usenet posts."

    Probably about as accurate too.
