We once (on a degree course) peeled the cover off a floppy disk someone found. Put it back in the drive. It still worked.
Wiped finger prints all over it. It still worked
This was a 5 1/4 inch disk that we did all kinds of things to and it still worked. I think the important factor was - we didn't care if it lived or died; the critical stress detector chip only makes things fail when they have important work on the and you think of breathing on them wrong.
Then I had problems - like long delays; that got worse each time it ran
Then it didn't run at all.
This article talks about a linux version - since I don't want to PAY for a windows upgrade just to speak to my friends I'll check this out and see if its true - the call quality was great its true; so if I can get a reliable connection over an O/S I actually have it could be good.
My understanding was that a TV *does* emit radio waves, and that they can and do track them.
They also do it the easy way - look for TV sales, look for houses with no TV (in this day and age???) and hassle them (I had no TV for a few years and got a good few "reminders").
When they think they can make money at it - they DO get the detector vans out though. Student flats - hand held detector wandering from floor to floor (Students are very poor at getting licences, but most have a TV).

I've found this whole story pretty shocking - I'd heard of a scam where a card holder is placed inside the ATM machine (like a small plastic bag) which caught the card and stopped it being read properly and retained the card for later collection. That system depends on someone hovering to see you type in the PIN and to collect the card when you storm off so its easier to counter (check for card-recollection tags sticking out of the slot and be wary of anyone hovering)
Does anyone have information / suggestions about how to check easilly if a machine you are dealing with might have been tampered with ?
Initially entering a false PIN each time you use the card would fool "fake" ATM machines and possibly ones with only a few seconds video memory... but I don't know how the banks would deal with persistent wrong PIN's (followed by correct ones).
Anyone got thoughts as to how to detect scanners from a user point of view ? A shame the original set-up here wasn't photgraphed before being dismantled.
Tugging at the metal around the card slot before using it might shorten the life of the machines if everyone did it:-) Are they just held on with tape ?
We can prove IE isn't really required for windows 9x. Here is a company that provides the tools to remove it - for free.
http://www.98lite.net/ieradicator.html
Though some (microsoft) software requires it to be present - such as Money 2000 - or so I've heard.
So why doesn't this discussion about if its part of the operating system go away? We discuss if this application is part of the O/S most weeks. Its an application they added to their bundle, despite it reducing the reliability of their software.
Its almost funny that MS want to own the web-browser for windows so badly! They give it away for free, it reduces the security and reliability of their operating system even though it isn't really needed, you can't remove it even from a server that doesn't even have a console attached. It's hurting their products quiet a lot... they must be desperate to take all this pain.
I think the answer in the future has to be conbinations of ways to generate power.
Large turbines between buildings may not be the answer if noise in the building / swaying buildings turn out to be a problem but I'm glad someone is looking into this. Small turbines down the sides may work out better.. someone has to lok into it though.
Add wind-turbines to a building, solar cells, maybe even this piezo crystals on the sway, or pumping water or whatever.
The sooner we get all the power we need without using limited fossil resources the longer we get to live on the plannet.
This looks like a neat phone but nothing like a laptop. Look at the nokia 6310 (http://www.nokia.com/phones/6310/main_feat.html) and compare. This has wap 1.2.1, bluetooth, GPRS, HSCSD... all the toys. (its not out yet - but neither is the Ericcson).

First it worked with windows ME

Then it didn't run at all.

It kills the flying rats ? (Pidgeons) - Most places are trying to rid their citys of them - This is a BONUS !!!!!
