MADRID, Spain (CNN) -- At least 173 people were killed and more than 600 injured in a series of explosions on Madrid's railway network at the height of morning rush hour, Spain's interior minister says.
Spanish officials are blaming the Basque separatist group ETA for the coordinated attack, which comes ahead of Sunday's general election.
Spanish Interior Minister Angel Acebes said there were a total of 13 explosions at the Santa Eugenia, El Pozo and Atocha stations. He said there was "no doubt" ETA was responsible.
The most deadly blast happened on a train entering Madrid's main Atocha station, Acebes said.
Security forces found other bombs, and detonated them in controlled explosions, he added.
Survivors described scenes of chaos and panic in the Spanish capital.
"The worst was people screaming for help inside the train and there was nothing we could do," one survivor told CNN+.
People in tears walked away from the city's main Atocha station in droves as rescue workers carried bodies away from the scene.
Many people with bloodied faces sat on curbs, using mobile phones to tell loved ones they were alive. (More eyewitness)
After the blasts, all political parties announced they were suspending campaign rallies ahead of Sunday's election, but there has been no word that elections would be suspended.
The government called for a three-day period of mourning and impromptu anti-ETA demonstrations have broken out in parts of Madrid.
So far, there has been no claim of responsibility.
ETA is listed as a terrorist organization by the United States and the European Union, of which Spain is a member.
Before Thursday's attack, ETA had been blamed for 800 deaths since it began its fight for an independent homeland in Spain's northern Basque region.
Spanish police -- who have foiled several recent bombing attempts by ETA -- were on high alert for terror attacks by the separatist group ahead of Sunday's vote.
Video of the scene showed the wreckage of the train at Atocha, broken into pieces by the force of the explosions
is the way artist seem to agree on all that...
the internet is really the best way for an artist to be know, especially the ones that can't get a fair deal from distributing companies. artists can handle their own marketing and distribution...
steve coleman does so for his older albums at www.m-base.com, check it
Some people I respect say the GPL is a bad idea, period. They say it's too restrictive of programmers' rights, in the sense of forcing them to open what they've done to the world. Fine: If you don't like the GPL, don't create software from code that used it in the first place. Then put different licensing terms on what you've done
that shut's up pretty much any criticism of the GPL i've ever read.
Considering the present situation with numerous airlines filing for chapter 11, i can tell you they'd rather have the interference worries fixed by their own action rather than see the customers go away.
god the US are starting to look more and more like the USSR, you guys have the best constitution out there, shame it seems to get really easy these days to crush the first amendment.
Grew a beard, i bet by the time he reached 40 some kids would call him all sorts of name, and say that he is a threat to the movement, just as some are saying about this bearded weirdo who wrote some strange license.
more seriously, i think linux is still very much linus's baby, and making him accept this is gonna be pretty difficult.
it'd probably be a good thing though and certainly speed up the developpement.
hopefully we wont end up with some mad dramas, but experience as shown Linus is not always the kindest of leaders when presented with ideas that differs his
you want the company to pay a box loader more than $8 an hour, but you'll be the first to go online and find the lowest price for any item you want to buy
it's not like it would kill to cut a bit on the CEO's wage and raise up your low level employee's wage.
as far as i know companies that do online discount are not all broke, HP is not broke these days.
i've always wondered how such a system can work!!
these guys work for $8/hour!
and you can bet the managers are on about 5 times that.
having worked in the hotel industry (and studied it for 5 years) i can tell you this method is only profitable in the short term.the employee is not happy and delivers poor work, and eventually it turns against the employer.
thing is if you envolve the employee in the company, you can a much better return, the employee will do concessions when you need it.
IMHO the japanese model is a lot based on that idea (although it will probably change with tough times ahead).
in France one thing that is considered by many an inconvenient, but is for most an asset is that there's a legal right to go on strike.
it slows down the economy, and the employement rate, but quality of life is a priority.
that's how we get 35hours work per week, and 30+ days paid holiday a year
as they pointed out on the website, it's a base 4
so if you know your binaries 00 01 10 11 well you
just have to adapt to a base 4 00 01 02 03 10 11..
so 01=a 02=b
i still have to sort the problem out though, but it seems to me like a pretty clever way to engage people if done jointly with a proper exam!
or are we not slowly moving towards a society where the consumer will not OWN anything anymore.
off what i understand if this law came to pass, then they would be able to legally force out of the internet a user who doesn't fulfill their requirement (maybe through a proprietary authentication protocol).
that's pretty scary, because we'd have to fullfill their criteria to have access to something we've paid for.
gosh this sounds more and more like 1984!
if over half the users are spending 2 hours making the same customization, wouldn't it make sense to make that customization available as a default?
yeah that's called a theme.
no seriously, more themes should ship with your basic edition of kde, gnome, windowmaker...
blackbox does that, and there's plenty on the internet, distros would spend one hour, and offer even more choice to their users, instead of having them download the whole shebang!!!
forced them to release it WinXP earlier.
that would have been a laugh in this gloomy end of year.
now just wait and see cause WinXP SE is coming soon!
and don't forget that's the road ahead.
heaven is a place where there would only be bullshit on TV (hourrah, we ayeth halfway there)--Frank Zappa
if schools can save money using free software (linux or not) then it's good!!!
the whole idea that people can't switch between gui is just wrong
schools should just teach you the basics of using a spreadsheet program wether it's Gnumeric or Excel you just have to click on the little printer and there you go it's printing.
and the formulas to feed your spreadsheets are what really matters, teach a kid to understand that and he'll be ready for Gnumeric 5,star office 22,or MS office 2006
now maybe there's also a fault in our educational systems in that we learn to only be proactive in a specific environment, instead of learning the basic logic of something!!!
by the time they get out of school, students are not expected to be power users of any piece of software anyway, how many kids do you know learnt how Win98 works just from using it in school???
i could teach anybody how to use KDE, as long as they know they need to click here to
connect to the internet, here to launch a browser, even my granny!!!
at home i'm teaching my flatmate how to play a little with linux, just the basic things, and he's doing well, he prefers black box and windowmaker as window managers and the gnome if he needs a desktop
the result, he knows just as much as one should know about the internet by the time one gets out of school!!
windows or linux really doesn't matter, it's the logic that counts!!
META content="MSHTML 5.50.4134.100" name=GENERATOR

as a frenchman i'm really starting to feel annoyed by the attitude of some of my counterparts, people must really get a distorted view of our country!!!!

> We live under an oppressive regime that is, at present, focusing more of its energies on oppressing foreign nations, instead of its own citizens.
and what do you do to change the situation, did you vote at the last election, did you protest when you had the opportunity??
as long as americans do not try to change things, don't be surprised at the way the rest of the world looks at americans, i'm sad to say
>I'm deeply offended at this. The U.S. government is punishing an entire nation for the actions of it's democratically elected government
well it's not the first time, look at Allende in Chile, democratically elected, yet the US pushed on with pinochet
I can understand the US want to preserve their sovereignty, i can't understand why their only recourse is brute force
