The difference is, I am not a karma whore who is so starved for attention that he must constantyl recycle the one schtick that was able to get a couple mod points one time. See, I don't CARE that you don't know who I am. You obviously do care that people know of you, or you wouldnt be whoring. In a few weeks though you will be just like me, unknown to the masses. The only thing is, it will bother you, while I am perfectly happy where I am.
Does anyone remember 575? What's that, no? Try real hard... oh I see you kinda remember now. Yeah he was that guy was popular for about 30 seconds then faded away into the dust. Like hula hoops, pet rocks, and Novell, Enoch Root is a simple fad that will soon pass.
I never said calling it monolithic was bashing it. I even admitted that yes, the kernel IS monolithic. What I have a problem with is his incorrect blanket statement that makes it seem like you have to recompile the kernel every time you change any hardware. With the exception of some stuff (possibly sound, as was pointed out already), that is simply untrue. In your post, you made some real statements as to why monolithic can be a bad thing. What I object to is the writer's generic, incorrect statement, with little backing and no explanation, which basically seems little more than jumping up and down shouting "ooo ooo bad bad!" If the article had included some of the arguments you made, I would have had no problem with it. YOUR Post is a statement of fact. The author's is a statement of FUD
Actually I was just trying to show how open minded I am, for I love all God's creatures, and all the OS'es of the world. And cute fuzzy bunny wabbits and flowers.
In all seriousness though, I was making a point, that I am open minded about the promises of any OS out there, I use BSD right alongside Linux and BeOS, and *GASP* even MacOS sometimes. I will try any OS and judge it based on its technical merits, not based on my own personal prejudices. And I CERTAINLY wouldnt allow those personal preferences to cause me to go out of my way to rip on an OS that wasn't my preferred one
I hate to feed a troll, but... I personally prefer OpenBSD, Although I have used and am quite happy with FreeBSD as well. A lazy person like me just happens to enjoy the added comfort of the extra security of OpenBSD:)
I realize that Linux is monolithic, and I also realize that some things DO require a recompile, and that the modules aren't the end-all solution. I appreciate your clarification of the issue, because it was a thought out statement about how things are structured. The BeNews article had more of a FUD-like tone to it. It made a grossly inaccurate blanket statement, which, while having some grains of truth, was far from giving the whole picture, and was said in a way that it came across as more of a bash towards linux, rather than any discussion of the technical merits of QNX. Instead of being "wow, QNX can do some neat stuff!", It was more like "ooo ooo ooo look how much linux stinks, you shouldnt use it!" I for one wish more people would be like you, discussing technical issues for what they are, and not letting personal preference weigh the tone of their words.
Why is it that whenever a site that favors one OS talks about others it has to throw in little completely incorrect flames at the other OS'es? From the Benews site, speaking about microkernels...
It is also the exact opposite of the Linux kernel, which is "monolithic" (everything is built into the kernel, hence the need for re-compilation when you add/remove hardware).
Now, yes, the Linux kernel is monolithic, and you DID used to have to recompile when adding hardware, way back in the day. But nowadays we have these little things called modules, where you can just plug one in and voila! No recompiling needed. It really bugs me when people make incorrect statements at the expense of something that's not their little pet. I am a BIG fan of both BeOS and Linux, and would like for once to see them discussed without petty little pokes and prods. It's not quite a flamewar, but we as a geek community should try to better ourselves from creeping into the realms of FUD-slinging. We are better than that, people.
But what if that library contained a work unique to the world? An original writing from one of the world's great philosophers? Maybe it is just the mindset of academia implanted into my brain (I am a physics major), but I believe that knowledge and truth hold value above all else in the world.

Think free speech, not free beer. RMS has stated time and again that making money off the code is not in any way evil. The question is one of being able to do with what you buy as you please. It's akin to a car or VCR manufacturer selling you a product and making it illegal to tear it open and fix it yourself if something goes wrong. I will pay through the teeth for a product that fits my requirements and is useful to me, if it preserves MY FREEDOM to do with that product what I want. I realize that by changing the internals I void any warranty, implied or otherwise, but that is my choice. I do not hang onto the notion that all software I use must be free for someone else's ideals, but for my own. I demand that I have the rights I believe I deserve when I purchase a product. I have no problem with companies producing proprietary code; I simply choose to not purchase their product, because to ME, having freedom in my software is important. And yes, I do evangelize, and I do try to convince my friends of the importance of standing up for their freedoms when they choose software. Every person has a right to form his own opinion on what they hold important, and you have every right to believe that you do not hold the freedom of your software sacred, as some of us do, but do not criticize us for having the intestinal fortitude to stand up for what we believe in, and make our own choice to use only software that supports the ideals we hold true
you could quite well decide to have everyone at the front door of the more important building, say a hospital, and leave the other, say a library
Are you implying that a library is an unimportant building? In my eyes, the library is the MORE important of the two. A hospitol saves lives, certainly, but those are a few lives that occur in the here and now. A library is a bastion of knowledge and truth, to sacrifice the very knowledge that sets us apart from the beasts to save a few people in the present would be downright selfish. As members of society, we have a responsibility to preserve what we know, not only for ourselves, but for our children, and our children's children.
I know the guy's brother. He's in a tizzy about having his ISP pull his page today and cost him some serious loot, so I dont know that he's had time to address the embarrassment. I already asked his brother when I get the quicktime of him eating the hockey puck mouse.:)

Ah, yes the Norwegian Blue... whats, uh, whats wrong with it.
I'll tell you whats wrong with it my lad... it's dead, thats whats wrong with it!
Its not dead, its pining for Yahoo
Look my lad, I know a dead parrot when I see one, and I'm lookin at one right now
He's not dead, he's waiting for AOL to dialup
allright then, I'll let him use my cable modem
look! he surfed!
he didn't surf, that was you banging the keyboard
I didnt!
Look my lad, this parrot is definitely deceased, and when I pinged it not half an hour ago, you assured me that its total lack of response was due to it being tired and lagged out after a long fragfest
31337 bird, the norwegian blue, beautiful rootkits!
the root kits don't factor into it my lad, it's stone dead this parrot is no more it has ceased to IRC it's expired and gone to meet its Admin bereft of pr0n it rests in peace if you hadnt signed it on napster it would be freeing up a modem. this, is an EX SURFER.
Did it occur to you that perhaps Sodakar has an opinion based on a sense of right/wrong, and doesn't care about the details of laws he/she doesn't agree with?
what you said, in other words, is: I feel it is my duty to define what other people mean by their statements and pass arbitrary judgements on them.
No, I don't really. But then again the Femmes sounded like crap even tho we had good equipment set up (they just suck, plus they were stoned). I have heard MP3's over our claire brothers R-4's, and they honestly don't sound all that bad. With a little tweaking of the EQ, its surprising how good you can make them sound. Remember, when you do a big concert, the biggest concern is sometimes not the sound, but the clarity of the signal. There are so many other things that contribute (poor acoustics of the venue, the fact that bands generally suck live, etc) to the fact that it sounds like crap. A good tech's job isnt to make things sound awesome, which is usually nearly impossible, but to makes things sound a lot less shitty than they really are. And yes, i HAVE seen a big signal quality dip with the unbal. cable I used to use at home. It also cause a funky interference hum on my DVD player
Tell a man that there are 400 Billion stars and he'll believe you
great idea... except trying to get a signal thru that kind of cable is hit or miss. with unbalanced line-level, anything over 6 feet is risking it. sure, it might work, but when you're used to professional concerts (think violent femmes, rusted root, etc) you get in a "don't risk it" attitude. I've seen a hundred feet of unbal line level make it... I've also seen mad interference in less than 4 feet. A well shielded cable can help, but the only real solution is to balance the signal. A pair of line balancers or passive direct boxes connected with XLR would be a much better solution... and could easily reach over a thousand feet.
Tell a man that there are 400 Billion stars and he'll believe you
MP3 anywhere is in theory a great idea... wireless transmission is great and all, BUT... I can see a couple problems.
1.) interference: there was a thread on/. about this about a week ago... the band MP3 anywhere operates on is much less regulated. read: bigger chance to interfere.
2.) flexibility: with a real unit sitting next to your stereo, you have better control, etc (think remotes).
3.) range. CAT-5 can go a hell of a lot further without signal loss than mp3 anywhere.
Tell a man that there are 400 Billion stars and he'll believe you
Well, I was considering my own home netowork... With my roommate downloading Pr0n all day, and all the interference present from my bazillion gizmos... I can rarely get anywhere 10Mb/s between two machines on my network. I guess I kinda forgot that not everyone is as twisted as me:)

My all time fave anime movies were the Urotudoji (sp?) series. Also known by what I assume is the american translation of Legend Of The Overfiend. They are very dark, twistedly sexual pieces that can so disturbing that the mesmorise you. The second in the series has nothing to do with the overall storyline, but it has evil Nazis summoning dark magics and plenty of twisted sexual images. This movie completely changed my outlook on Anime

Frags as in quake; if you've never played networked quake and struggled to optimize your ping times, you wouldn't get the reference.
OT: The frag reference is originally military in origin. 'Nam, I think. Go watch Platoon or something.

Not bad, although I'm not seeing how much disk space, or what sort of UI you get.
I think the point is, the disk space is provided by the PC. Maybe it plays the files over the network? Seems like bandwith would be an issue though..
