Any pointers to sites about hacking a voting machine...?

    BTW, does it run linux..?

  2. Indian perspective on IBM Moving Developer Jobs Overseas · · Score: 1

I run a small software company in India & really sympathize with those losing their jobs as a result of outsourcing to India. (I'm not directly responsible as we work with Japan :-) )

However, you must consider that all the outsourced work is much lower in the value chain as far as IT industry is concerned. Indian companies & programmers are essentially performing 'worker bee' roles, while work in consultancy, design, conceptual thinking, product design etc. is still done in the US. In fact if you look at the number of software products designed & developed by Indian co.s, it is really low. The success of our IT industry has been in providing mainly coding services at low cost.

American co.s & people will still drive the industry & continue to do well as long as they are in the creative, innovative & high value role of creating & designing new products & services. Indian co.s cannot grow beyond a point till they move up the value chain & think beyond being outsourced coding outfits.

This is simply fantastic! I would love to try this out. Just wonder what would happen to the Telecom companies around the world who AFAIK depend on long distance telephony as the major source of their revenues...or will they transform into unified service providers providing bandwidth for data, voice, video & other applications?

  4. Re:Unreadable sites on WWW Inventor On Microsoft's Browser Tricks · · Score: 2, Interesting

I think you are missing the point totally..making your site accessible to all browsers definitely does not mean serving to the lowest common denominator. It just means you should detect the browser & serve content appropriate for it. If a browser supports the fancy stylesheets & latest HTML standards, by all means take advantage of that, but don't forget folks using lynx who would prefer text-only content.

As for plugins for Flash etc., I don't think this is comparable to shutting people out, as long as parallel content is available (whenever possible). Of course in all this, the most important issue is of the development cost in creating content for the large number of browsers out there.

  5. Forcing upgrades on Windows XP Has Arrived · · Score: 1

Most current Windows users (apart from early adopters) will instinctively resist the upgrade from Win9x/NT/Win2k as nothing new is being offered...but slowly & surely, MS will make it difficult or at least inconvinient to keep on using the older flavours.

It is fully aware of the changed market situation as compared to the Win95 launch & knows it has to coerce people, especially corporates, into upgrading. MS will try to offer value through new application releases & more importantly, services using the .net framework, which will make everyone to switch eventually.

  6. Re:If open source was a religion... on Opposing Open Source? · · Score: 1

Umm...if you must compare with religion, OSS would be like Hinduism rather than Islam..Islam advocates one all powerful God above everything & also has a fairly structured hierarchy, though perhaps not so organized as Catholicism.

Hinduism on the other hand is a very broad based religion having huge number of supreme beings (Gods)..pick your flavour! Not only can you pick whom to worship, but you can also choose the way you worship. There is no set of fixed rules & no rigid hierarchy of people governing the religion.

Lastly, it absorbs readily influences from all over & is not really a religion, but a way of life! :-)

  7. Re:Crack Smoker Anonymous on Linux on the Desktop · · Score: 1

That's BS...we have around 20 machines (Celeron 600 MHz mostly) with 64MB RAM running Win2k. It works quite well even when using MS Office & Visual Studio. No one has complained about serious speed problems. In fact I had to add 64MB more to my dual boot machine for using Staroffice on RH7.1.

Other than this, I think RH7.1 is indeed a good replacement for Win2k for most purposes.

  8. Time to slap the real culprits on Further Updates On Terrorist Attack · · Score: 1

I'm from India. Yesterday I came home from work, switched on the TV & was dumbstruck by the brutal & horrid attacks on WTC. It was simply unbelivable to see the towers disintegrating before my eyes...live on TV. The first thought that crossed my mind was Tom Clancy's "Executive Orders"..but as usual reality is much bizarre than fiction.
My hearfelt & deep condolences to all American people, especially those affected directly by the tragedy.
This has highlighted the real menace of terrorists in todays world & how it affects all countries equally. The time is probably not right to say this, but in a way, the US has brought this upon itself by promoting regimes like Taliban in Afghanistan & Pakistan when it suited US's politics. Now you're seeing the consequences.
These terrorist nations have waged a proxy-war with our peaceful democracy for decades now..we are paying a terrible price with our people's lives. It's time that US brand these nations as terrorists & take action against these criminals.
