This sounds to me like an opportunity for an interactive atlas organized like a text adventure. For example, let's describe a map with the starting point as America:
to the west you see another ocean (the Pacific) vast and wide, to the east you see another ocean (the Atlantic)not quite as vast as the Pacific, to the North there is another county (Canada), to the south you see another country (Mexico).
Would you like to zoom in (out)? zoom in
You are in Ohio, there are three large cities here, and a number of smaller one, they are... to the west is... to the east is... etc.
Options can be extended to request geographical details, political and economic information, and history.

Sounds like a nice app that I'd like to try. Is there any app out there right now which "automatically identifies, segments, rotates to perpendicular orientation, crops, and saves each of the detected photos in the scanned image from the flatbed to a unique filename"?
This slashdot post had me assuming that the galactic center being referred to was our own Milky Way's. It is not.
The findings are not of our galactic center, but that of NGC 4013. "NGC 4013, which looks similar to our Milky Way Galaxy, resides in the constellation Ursa Major, 55 million light-years from Earth."
You could popularize your app by going to a specific music community like ambient or idm at hyperreal.org and offering your application for file sharing among the list subscribers. Soulseek is a file sharing app which became popular for idm listeners (see soulseek.org). The great concentration of interesting files for like minded users will make your app competitive for these users. This user base should help you develop your app. Eventually the apps popularity should add more and more users from outside these smaller communities.
