  1. I just got back on A Gaijin in the Akihabara? · · Score: 1

I was there last week. It's very simply, you learn the name of the product you're buying (learning katakana can be helpful here but usually not necessary), Then you walk up to a counter or member of the sales staff and say (product name ) o kudasai. Then you flash your card and you're done. you don't have to figure out what they're saying unless they don't like your credit card. They already know you're a gaijin and couldn't care less. The largest store is LLaox. your best chance for english speaking assistance is there. Look for a giant red sign saying The Computer (llaox has multiple stores in the area) http://206.129.88.168/japan2/dump2/dcp_0088s.jpg for image of LLaox. You may hear the area called by it's shortened nickname "Akiba".

  3. Re:We need to start a petition to change the theme on Star Trek: Enterprise Reactions? · · Score: 1

I liked it. It's better than the standard orchestral themes. It's not something I would buy, and it isn't going to make the top ten, but it's not meant to do that. It's just meant to describe and open the show, and it does a very good job of describing the mood. What isn't appropriate is the vulcan chick in the seven-of-nine costume. She's supposed to be wearing robes, but I guess the producers needed some flesh...

  4. Can we help the authorities? on New York Red Cross Needs Tech Help · · Score: 1

With all this computer power, there should be something the geek community can do to locate the support network of the terrorists who did this.

I'm not suggesting any illegal hacking, but rather some organized information gathering. Using bots to mine the net for data.

  5. fill the steel columns with water. on More WTC News · · Score: 1

The planes did not destroy the columns, heat did. If we fill the columns of the replacement building with water and circulated it, you could cool critical areas until the fire could be extinguished. those of you who have built peltiers should be familiar with this concept. what do you think?

  6. Re:Poll: Rebuild Trade Center or Not? on More WTC News · · Score: 1

Yes, larger and stronger. I don't want any damn memorial in that space. I want a larger, defiant building.

  7. it seems we could do more to help the effort. on More On Tragedy · · Score: 2, Insightful

with the enourmous amount of hackers and computer specialists in the slashdot community, it seems that this community could be used to identify the responsible parties, and aid the authorities. I am not asking for vigilante action, but maybe some targeted information gathering. I'm thinking is terms of bots to collect information and a central database to gather and mine data. after important data has been verified (prevent passing on false rumors) then passing the results to the authorities. We've got all this computing power. It's time to use it for something more important than Quake.
