Your point would make sense if these imported workers didn't have to live in america while they worked. So an american wants to be paid $x for a job. What's he going to spend it on? Of course, we'll spend it on terrible american luxuries, like a car, and maybe a movie every once in a while, but he'll also spend it on food, housing, and medicine: things he needs to survive which will comprise the majority of what his paycheck goes towards, and maybe a little saved over for the future. But if an imported worker gets paid $(x-y) which is much less than x, then our imported worker will be struggling to pay for the basic necessities of life. If he's having trouble making ends meet living in a hovel eating ramen every night, then how is he going to put significant money back into our economy, let alone give any to his family back in (IMPOVERISHED_NATION)?
So Farscape is prohibitively expensive to make per episode as a TV show. Fine. Great. Why a TV show then? If all we do want is the plot to be finished up, why not a novel?
Opps, you need to buy another copy of the tax software to use on this computer. What, you say you bought a new computer? -- too bad, but another copy. You say you need to recover your tax data from 2 years ago and the 2 year old version is no longer sold in stores? Too bad, our copy protection prevents you from installing again.
The obvious solution to this problem is to use virtual machines and install all of your software there. Then the configuration won't change, and you can use your apps forever without the pirate police getting called.
I like how a little thought can stomp out almost any DRM scheme, simply, and effectively....
That shot that you've worked so very hard on is being distributed to hundreds of people, who will never pay you a dime for your efforts. Even worse is the person who stands over your shoulder just to snap the same shot you do... Come on people! It's not like the photographer is being unreasonable! She's simply trying to recoup her losses and earn a living...
So were the buggy manufacturers, so were the portriat painters, so were the horse-drawn farm implement manufacturers. That didn't entitle them to a profit, and it doesn't entitle you. Not being a multi-milion dollar megacorporation doesn't give you a monopoly on morality either.
By giving High-Res pictures to your entire family without paying for each one of those photos distributed, you have cheated and honest, hard-working, photographer out of a living. (I know a few who have been driven out of business because of this.)
These people weren't driven out of business by people copying pictures (so every time I copy a picture, it takes money out of his pocket PHYSICALLY? Better patent that), they were put out of business by their own dependance on outmoded methods of business. By all means, attempt to convince me that those methods aren't antiquated. You might even succeed. But that won't stop the simple, cold hard fact that your business practices don't work anymore. Adapt! You too will go out of business if you continue to believe that everyone who copies that picture (nay! Looks at it even! It's only logical!) owes you money and you depend on it.
In the meantime, why not assume your customers will copy the pictures? Encourage them to, allow them to. Just plan on it when you hand that person the check. Not profitable? Perhaps. So maybe you should change professions. It seems that buggy maker, or portriat painter might be right up your alley.
It's interesting that you say that the rest of the world is ready to make changes because the kyoto treaty exempts one of the largest producers of global warming causing pollution: China. Furthermore, in no way does the Bush administration propose no change in the current attitude towards the environment. Simply acknowledging that a global warming exists does NOT make the Kyoto treaty the best method to remedy the situation, if indeed the situation needs remedy, which is infinitely arguable at this point. The logical process in this case looks like this:
Prove existence of condition -> Prove condition is bad -> Create workable solution that has the best cost/benefit ratio.
BEST estimates put us at step one. We ignore this process at our own risk.
The Bush administration actually came out and said earlier in his presidency that a warming of the earth was real and caused by humans, and that they were discussing what, if anything, to do about it. Please try not to stereotype too much in your posts.
Recently we've heard a lot about children learning a second language early on, usually in Kindergarten. Well, I did, it just happened to be Applesoft Basic. I don't feel stunted....
Am I wrong, but weren't the people who hijacked the planes NOT citizens of the US? In any case, international flights are still a problem. Perhaps Oracle would like to do this on a worldwide level? What additional security does this provide? If this were expressed as a ratio of security gained against privacy lost, it'd be as close to zero as makes no odds....
