    It's probably got something to do with the iPod having to load the mp3 DB etc. They prolly didn't want people thinking it took ages to load every time they turned it on.
    I do agreee with you how ever. They should still have included and small switch for when you're not using it for a while or want to conserve battery power.
    Well, you knoe what to do: Contact Apple's feedback and tell them you want a switch.

    As much as any other plastic component in your computer. Plastics are made from organic materials (oil = dead organic matter). OLEDS are basicly plastic LEDs.

    Yes, thanks to the US Media Propaganda Machine TM. Most other countries' citizens had a majority that opposed a war. Your average Joe is just going to go by what he see's on TV. Not many people really think about it. And even fewer acctually do some research about it (and realise that the US media pump out propaganda 24/7).

    If nobody did, we wouldn't of had the missles we needed and we'd be russia's bitches by this point to have kept from getting nuked.

    Wrong. Russia wanted an agreement to stop making nukes (probably because of their economy, and because it was getting out of hand). But the US said no. Which basicly forced Russia to keep on making them, destroying their economy in the process.

    How about we take a new approach to having students actually give a rat's ass about science or learning in general? The problem isn't textbooks or any 'style' of teaching. It's students who come to school who simply don't care.

    And of course, the reason they don't care is probably because schools boring becasue of the teaching styles and boring text books.

    By separting the content from how it is displayed makes it easier to display it in pretty much any format. By taking a single XML document you could create a page that looks great on Mozilla, great on IE, a WAP enabled phone, Opera, Microwave, Fridge - whatever!

    Exactly. It should be noted that this is also the purpose of CSS. Of course it depends on the complexity of the page. If your page is complex and requires quite different content (maybe less menu items for PDAs or something), you way need to go XML + XSL -> XHTML + CSS. Otherwise you can just go XHTML + CSS.

    Some genius decided that everything should be in xml, and that we would use XSLT for a lot of the data manipulation.

    Perhaps the problem lies here, and not in XML? Don't blame XML just becasue someone took it on as a buzzword and treaded like the holy grail answer to all computer problems. It's a tool, there are places where you should use it, and where you shouldn't.

    Hello? If you don't put a closing XML tag then the parser will run to "infinity". Of course the end of file will terminate it, but still, in thoery this requires infinite resources.

    Infinitly? Unless you're data is infinite in size. In which case there is no computer technology that will ever be able to do anything with it.

    Say you have a 1 TB XML data file and all you want is some header information. Well if the entire data set is enclosed in a tag, then the WHOLE 1 TB data file must be read into memory, or somehow indexed.

    1TB? Just what would someone be doing with an XML file that size? Have you even considered that XML is not meant for such huge datasets (atleast not at this time)?

    3D software isn't just for "effects" I don't see why you can't create a program in it. It's no more using it as the central element than a normal cartoon uses drawing as the central element.

    Perhaps you are getting confused with the overuse of big, cheesy explostions in some programs? ;)

    BTW. South Park does use 3D effects as the central element. The entire cartoon is created with a 3D package, and they use rendering effects to give it the 2d cardboard cut-out look.

    Perhaps this is what you mean anyway. In which case, I don't see what's wrong with this new cartoon, because it's simply using a different style.

    It's not just the actors. Don't forget the props, film equiptment (and that stuff is very expensive), transport, and a whole other collection of little things that you don't have to muck around with in CGI.
    Chances are, the may already have the abilities to do CGI anyway (for SFX). So they might not be spending a lot of money on somehting new, just an expanding what they have.

    Oh yeah. China definitly doesn't have as many as US etc. But they still have quite a few.

    This page has a few stats. It's not the origonal one I saw. The origonal one has said Russia had less total nulcear weapons that the US. Then again the might have been weapons that could be used.

    History. I'm not saying doomsday scenarios have always happened. I'm saying war has always happened. And will continue to as long as people are making enemies and keep participating in an arms race. It's just that now, the human race has weapons that are so mush more powerfull than anything we have had before.

    The US have over 10,000 nuclear warheads. I think about 7,000 are in serivce, the other's could probably be put in service. Other contries like Russia, China, and France also have large amounts. Don't you think this is just a wee bit silly?

    True. Maybe I should have added "except for hardware problems" Still not sure how oftern that's on MS's side of things though.

    Spose I should point out that I do have hardware/driver problems, but I've still never had a BSOD, maybe that's just my set up.

    Still you have to admit it happens less than win98 etc.

    I don't turn on the blocking capabilities because they interfere with my ability to use webpages which I frequently need to access.

    So javascript is of use to you. How many sites are there that you use that automaticly pop-up unrequest windows that are helpful, and that don't have any other way to open them up?
    Now take into account that you are not the only person on the web, and realisticly, how many other people do you think will have the same problems as you? And don't forget, some people maybe willing to make that trade off anyway (like me).

    Nothing is perfect. You can't have everything you're own way. If javascript was never invented, the what about all the features that would never exist that people find useful today?

    It could be said that the internet should never have been invented because of all the security risks that happen when you connect a whole lot of computers together.

    BTW, There are browsers out there that can selectivly block pop-up from different sites. And if you browser doesn't, or doesn't do it well, them maybe that's a problem with the browser and not javascript, and perhaps you should be complaining to browser makers instead?

    This is like saying "We should destroy our nuclear (newquelar) capabilities to promote world peace!". The whole point of having this kind of tech is so that even if enemies do get them, we can fight on their level, or (even better) above it.

    That is why we must keep developing weapons. Just because we stop doesn't mean everybody else will. If you outlaw guns, only outlaws will have guns.

    No. The answer is to convince your enemies that it would be the best for all parties to disarm. Else you get into an arms races, where more and more powerful weapons are created. So when something does happen, everyone will be fucked beyond belief. And believe me, it will happen. It always does unless you trying to cooperate with your enemies and make them your friends instead.

    The larger window control icons (Close, Maximize, Minimize) are very welcome when using a laptop's less-than-precise pointing device.

    It should be noted that you can change the size of the buttons in classic mode. Infact you can make them even bigger. I'm pretty sure they're stuck with the XP skin.

    As much as I don't like MS as a company. I have to say that the BSOD is pretty much a thing of the past, and the jokes are getting a bit lame and dated.

    Blocking pop-up windows blocks legitimate uses of pop-up windows as well as illigitimate uses. If we didn't have javascript, then legitimate sites would find a javascript-free way to provide the same information. My life would be better. That's my point.

    I've never encountered this problem once. I use Phoenix, and it has an option to block un-called pop-ups. I have found that in the very rear case of people using an automatic pop-up that was of use, that they also have a "click here" link aswell.

    Anyway. pretty soon, once all major browsers have pop-up blocking capabilities, people will stop using pop-ups. At which point, blockers can be turned off. You could argue that people would start to use pop-ups again, but they'd realise they if they tried to, then blockers would just get turned on again.
