Well, the problems faced by many is the ability to read/write to Word 2000/XP format. Some companies tried to make the switch but couldn't share documents very well with other departments/companies. Best they did in StarOffice 5 was Word 97. It would be a lot more successful if it could do that. It's not Word or Office by a longshot but is Office really worth $400 when you can get this for nothing? It's still pretty good.
My guess is that it's only intended to protect the data, and that you could still use the laptop itself if you formatted or something. If you want real security on your laptop, install lo-jack. Or go retro and just handcuff it to yourself like those guys with the briefcases.
Well, I guess they're putting their own MP3 players out of business. I don't plan on paying for anything music related until things change... It's easy to get around things like that but its really the principle of the thing... I take offense when they try and tell me what I can and cant view the intellectual property I legally purchased with, or how I can legally consume the content... It's LEGAL for me to rip them into MP3 and listen to them on my computer or my portable mp3 player. The difference with VHS is, that was the nature of the technology, there is simply no need for that on CD's except to infringe on legal rights. You can still copy the cd and sell it illegally, you can still illegally rip the cd and upload it somewhere, I don't see how it really stops anything illegal, it just makes it harder for technologicly "stupid" people.
Every day we lose more and more rights... A little here, a little there. Though, I doubt if they can stop me from taking my audio out and recording that... Oh wait, they'll just make sure new sound cards and stereos no longer have audio out, and the ones that do, cd's wont play on.
What are the current laws on paintings, drawings, or sculptures of children having sex? Are there any? I don't think there are... And I think they should be treated the same. So what if one is a little more lifelike than the other? As long as its not based on some children being filmed doing it... Then it's technicly art and subject to 1st amendment.
I was thinking about that, but then I thought about all the other cables that were rounded before. Seems logical... IDE cables probably transfer more data and have a higher propensity for crosstalk. I guess they fixed that. But you could just take some rubber bands and round ribbon cables yourself and not cause problems, all you need to do to make those is put some rubber around it.
Are those the same ones on thinkgeek that are in the banner ads on slashdot? I've been thinking of picking some up... Been wondering why they weren't rounded earlier, hope this isn't why.
Yeah but you still cant copyright "look and feel." If you steal the actual files and use them thats something else entirely but making something similar in appearance shouldn't get you sued...
Sun hasn't been laying off, but they haven't been hiring at all for about a year except for positions that absolutely positively must be filled. They took away all the free coffee and popcorn to save money but they are planning to let some people go, in the lower triple digits, if that. They've handled it very well... Most of the jobs being eliminated are vacant but id say about a few hundred worldwide maximum.
In other news, CmdrTaco sues Taco Bell for trademark infringement.

Didn't Apple already lose a lawsuit about look and feel already?

While we're at it, lets blame Boeing for making the airplanes and not including a remote control system for the government.
