  1. Paranoid Obsevation on Taking My Freedom With Me to China? · · Score: 1

First, how does anyone know who you really are? You could be gathering info on people here or learning how people circumvent things to bypass controls and tighten the noose harder.

Second, if you are heading that way, would you really jeopardize your own safety by posting to a public forum?

Third, and last, what s the reward for turning in someone who would fink on their peers or try to subvert the country? I could win this one either way! The bottom line, exercise more caution and discretion for your and your family's protection.
Dictatorships are what they are and I have seen many executed because of lesser infractions.

My only concern is nuclear powers using the space program as an experimental platform for creating ICBM's. There are too many in the world already. If it is truly for research, experimentation, and to place feet on another celestial body, I wish them God's speed and blessing. If not, a pox on them all!

I think this is one of those "show me" items, which many would greatly like to see succeed. The ability retain software and change OS's would be a great step to freeing users from OS bondage. Its potential is a bit frightening from a security aspect. Could we be looking at an new means of spreading malignant code across various OS platforms? It would require work, but when it comes time to mess over your fellow man, there are some that rejoice in doing it. You rightfully point out, also, that there may be some other caveats to be considered.

We could get a couple of Penguin costumes and have a SCO CEO look-alike cracking a whip at them at each roadshow location. Of course the Penguins would have to be in shackles.

Even better, encourage your peers to just not go to the event and not to buy from SCO. Let SCO go belly-up like many before. Of course they'd spin it to where they would have you believe they are entering a "new era of prosperity".

Did they hire guys from Enron and Arthur Anderson?

  5. Favorite Computer Bug Story on Anniversary of the First Computer Bug · · Score: 1

I was stationed in Hawaii with the 25th ID in the early '90s. We were using a Sparc IPC that had quit working and called Sun for warranty repairs. When the technician arrived, he opened the system and we found the problem(s). It appears the problem was caused by an ant colony, a tree fungus growing on the motherboard, or a short caused by the ants eating the motherboard! The technician asked how this could happen. We explained it was a tactical server which went through hell. The pedigree included: 2 deployments to Thailand, 3 deployments to Korea, 1 trip to JRTC at Fort Polk, Louisiana (where they were experimenting with a med program and had it actually save a life in the real world!), an unknown number of trips to training in the field, and it was the only data relay for the military, local, and federal Governments during the Hurricane Iniki recovery effort on Kauai. I wrote out a quick pedigree and the tech said he was going to frame the board - ant remains, fungus, and all. Explains why I like Sun Microsystems so much!

  6. Re:What happens when it gets hijacked? on Microsoft wants Automatic Update for Windows · · Score: 1

Even the best system is ofttimes overcome by the everpresent "ingenious idiot". Unix and it's offshoots have been around for ages and still need patches. So the idea of doing updates is not bad. However, AUTOupdates are not desireable. I think your point is valid. I would not want M$ deciding my company's or my home computer's security policies. It would also provide a means of openning access to every system their software runs on (like it's not open already). Also, given the M$ past performance record for faulty or system crashing patches, I am rather hesitant about letting them decide what I need on my system and when to install it. The overall damage could be catastrophic for online university attendees, home businesses, and a plethora of other "home" users. Maybe SPAMMERS first???
