    What IS funny is that the reason I didn't show you a screen grab of my browser is that I've got visible porn links all over it. ;)

    Well we realize it here, because it's BROUGHT UP every single time there's a mention of more than one processor running!! Yeesh. Heh.

    On a lighter note: When these processors become more popular, multi-threaded apps will come. Besides, its not like our machines aren't keeping up with apps today. Except for my 3D rendering, I don't have anything that would benefit from a faster processor, and I doubt many other people do either.

    THat's not even close to what Opera's default banner looks like.

    Take a look at this.

    Even that is about as 'obnoxious' as that gets. The Google ads are more subtle. Also, they do NOT blink, flash, make noise, or do anything else. They're quite literally Google text ads.

    Yes, absolutely. Slashdot's ad driven. More comments == more ads served. More ads serve == more ad revenue. By posting Roland stories, they're benefitting themselves. They don't give a rat's ass what the community thinks. If they did, would we see dupes ever again?

    Wow, I seriously disagree with this. Slashdot has demonstrated bias and sensationalism numerous times. If you like Linux, FireFox, OSS in general, Farscape, etc then you're happy here. If you don't mind Microsoft, find FireFox to be clunky, enjoy Enterprise, etc you're poorly represented here. Not only a good chunk of the stories sensationalist in nature, but the mod system basically drives conformity in public opinion.

    To put it another way: I have a hard time believing anything that's printed on Slashdot. I know I'm not alone in this feeling.

    Slashdot's a little more general purpose than the sites I've seen. What do you find interesting?

    I'm sorry I made that suggestion without giving you a good direction to go. Truth be told, my expectations of Slashdot aren't that high, so I haven't felt the need to go elsewhere. In the mean time, I have a primary interest in CG/Computer rendering. So I hang out at CGTalk.com. (Often they quote Slashdot stories, hehe.)

    The editors ALWAYS sucked. I've been here quite a few years myself, and I cannot remember a single period where there wasn't SOME complaint about how incompetent the Slashdot Editors are.

    If it riles you up so much, go to news.google.com. I don't really care where you go provided you chill on this topic. Why? Because I'm defending the dude? Uh, no. It's because he and Slashdot BOTH make money through advertising. In that business, bad publicity is good publicity. Ever see that Howard Stern movie? "Fans of the show listen for an average of 45 minutes a day. People that hate him listen for 3 hours. Think about it.

    Seriously, do you expect him to go away if all his submissions generate 100+ comments even if half of them are bitch bitch bitching? Let me put it another way: We still have dupes, stories with factual errors, and grammar abuse in the articles.

    It did have a slightly different color, yes. It also had the same voice as 3PO. If it decided to impersonate 3PO, it'd be difficult for the audience to tell. I'm not sure what it'd be like face, to face, though. At that point, I would start wondering about what the world looks like through Vader's mask. ;)

    Except it could cost you money. I don't know about your service provider, but I know that once I've downloaded a meg of information, I'll start having to pay per kilobyte. I suppose potentially a virus could infect my phone, put it into internet mode, and start downloading until my bill gets ridiculously high.

    I'm not terribly paranoid about that, though. I'm more concerned over a virus that caused a bunch of machines to dial 911 a few years ago. If whatever phone I have was capable of making calls because a malicious app told it to do so, I could find myself owing a lot of money because it dialed an expensive number. There are businesses thriving over that sort of scam.

    Well.. if they're selling a cell phone anti-virus product.

    Still, though, I see your point. Whatever Symantec's motivations are, there is benefit to be had over warning people about what advances in cell phone technology could mean. Cell phone developers have an almost clean slate to work from. If the big buzzword is 'security', hopefully they'll develop with the right mind set in place. Almost certainly, there'd be little concern over security if there was no perception that future customers would be worried about it. So, yes, I see your point. Symantec may unintentionally be doing everybody a favor.

    They'll need that AND more web enabled services. This'll happen soon, but I wanted to mention it. One of the reasons I have a hard time imagining a cell phone virus taking off is that most phones today rarely spend a lot of time on the net. SMS is about as close as one can get.

    That's funny because of all the computers I've had running 2K or XP (with one exception), I've only managed to do it 2 or 3 times. That's going back over 5 years and different hardware setups.

    On the other hand, there was one machine that was horribly defective. I could make it BSOD with XP. Then I replaced the mobo and suddenly, blammo, no BSODs. Go fig.
