  1. Laptop and Home Computer on Email On Both the Desktop and the Laptop? · · Score: 1

I know what the poster means, for a long time I did not have usefull mail on my laptop, I consider being able to view the mail I sent someone a crucial feature of email. Blame it on my isp, they dont offer an imap option. But recently when I was setting up a linux box for my website I installed an imap server for keeping my mail. For those that dont know imap differs from a pop server in that instead of the email client keeping all the mail on the client computer the imap server keeps the email on the server, so that any client can access the email. Bundled with fetchmail, to forward my old pop account to my new email at my domain, and Squirrell, a web mail client in case Im not on my own machine, its the perfect combo. Here is a link to a HOWTO. This guy set up his email system nearly identical to mine. Good Luck!

I will have to admit when I got my first computer at 13, that was my exact experience. Cleaning the drive I had somehow managed to delete command.com from it then reboot, hillarity ensues. I also remember trying to fix it without anyone realizing I broke it. I did manage to actually get the thing working after I little effort, thank god, that command.com was in c:\dos. Although you say that is the primary way people learn how somehing works, I realize I learned more just by fixing problems that occurred during ordinary usage. I do agree, imterfaces should be so natural using them should be second nature.

  5. I understand the poster. on Pay-As-You-Play MMORPGs? · · Score: 1

I understand the posters predicament. I have to say that I myself also have a problem with shelling out a monthly payment for play when I would only be able to play it a couple hours a week. The pricing model of monthly payement only really works for those that can play it many hours weekly. Although I really have to say that they have their target market down pat, obsessive geeks with lots of time, their pricing model excludes many who would like to enjoy their service. For example I myself have wanted to join many of the MMORPG's but my obsessive work schedule would only allow me to play a couple hours a week, hours that I would like to spend with my girl instead. So the real problem with their pricing model is that I would get no value out of their sevice for the money that I shellled out. I really like the idea of a pay per play system implimented in an MMORPG, I would be very inticed to play if I could pay as I go. I have allways been interested in them, but allways have been unable to play enough of them to make them worth it. I like the poster's idea of pay as you play.

Many before in the discussion have said that reducing eliminating ground loops in your equipment will eliminate RFI from being picked up in your equipment, however I doubt you are a Electrical Engineer. My suggestion is to replace all the flourecscent bulbs in your studio with these Led Floodlights, these would be easy to install, more efficient than flourescent, and will be the way everything is lighted years from now ( geekstat +1 ).

  7. Go Sites on Best Go Resources for a Beginner? · · Score: 2, Informative

I am one of the people on slashdot who actually plays the game. It is quite a simple game, black and white stones, placed on intersections. Although quite simple, it is hard to master.

The Daily Yomiuri - A Japanese Daily Newspaper that includes a go collumn, has frequent discussions about pro matches, contains joseki, and best of all contains an archive of previous go collumns that teaches go to beginners. I greatly enjoy reading this site, but of late have not had the time.

GoBase.org, who could forget this essential site (actually I almost did) not only for beginners but for experienced players, contains many, many problems, classic games, wonderfull resource.

The American Go Association - Contains many resources for those who are interested in learning about playing go.

The Korean Baduk Association might be most helpfull for you, however I do not know how much help they can be to english speeking people.

IGS (Internet Go Server), synonymous with online and go, will provide you with many resources about go, and even have an online client that you can play people throughout the world.

KGS is another online go server, apparently it has lectures every week.

The Interactive Way To Go is a link my brother just gave me, it contains some go problems, hope it helps.

Well, I hope to see you on igs soon. Please enjoy the resources that I dug up from you from my personal link folder, they will be invaluable in your progress in learning go.

  8. Re:I want to, but should I? on Review: Half-Life 2 · · Score: 1

I remember how immersive the first game was while playing it. I remember how revelutionary it was too, although looking back at it, it does not seem so revelutionary now. But then again, since playing the first one my standards for a good game has changed. Although not neccesarly important to play the first game, like a movie it is nice to have some idea of what is happening in the movie/game universe. I in fact just picked up a copy of the game from my girlfriend at EB. It really is funny how a six year old game is still being sold in the local stores. That is incredible staying power. I do not know of any other six year old game still in the main game stores. The game is definatly worth picking up, especially if you are going to pay $50-$60 dollars for the second one. You can pick it up pretty cheap on ebay, or for $20 bucks at Comp, or EB. Quite frankly I spend more money going out to eat than it will cost you for the origional Half-Life. Bottom line do you have to pick up the origional to enjoy half-life 2, no, should you yes.

  9. My Solution on How Would You Change U.S. Election Procedures? · · Score: 2, Interesting

My solution to the voting problem is two fold solution. It is part social, part technological.

First I would get rid of the electoral college. It forces canidates to focus on a small segment of the population ( individual states, and demographic groups ) that could leave them with a win instead of focusing on isues that effect everyone. Second, anyone who is a citizen of voting age can vote period. This eliminates the problem of voter disinfrachisement, provisional ballots, and absentee ballots.

Second is the technological solution to the voting predicament. Social security numbers should be used to ensure that duplicate votes are not entered, and only living people vote. Voting machines should be allways be networked using encryption to transmit and hashes to verify the autenicity. Voting machines should also create an optically scanalble paper ballot trail, it should also be plainly visible to the voter who he voted for by looking at the card. The purpose of the networked envirement is to collect live ellection results, and increase ellection efficieny, ensure only one vote per person. The purpose of the cards is to ensure election accuracy. Also absentee ballots could be handled in much the same way using an web application, and user balot card that must be printed out and sent in. At the end of the election results, the votes are audited using the paper cards, regardless of wether voter fruad is suspected.

That is my solution to the mess we call voting, simplification and verification. If India can vote electronically and correctly we should be able to as well. Please post any security concerns about my implimentation.

The topic at hand has to do with intelelectual property, in the specific domain software.

The roots of the web were formed at several universities, since its inception the web has relied on open standards. Open standards allow different venders/individuals to create their own implementation of the standard. This has allowed the widespread acceptance of the standard. The primary example of this is TCP/IP, it was created to allow various processes to communicate accrost various platforms. Today there are few operating systems that do not have their own implementation of TCP/IP. TCP/IP has been hand and hand with the web since its inception. HTTP the standard for hypertext transfer is also an open standard, and as TCP/IP was widley accepted so was HTTP.

Proprietary standards however are of the specific property of the IP owner. Often the owner the IP imposes specific limits on how the technology can be used. This is usually accomplished by patenting the technology. The IP owner can then license the technology and gain a profit stream from use of the technology. Propriety techonology however does not gain wide acceptance.

I do understand that patents are usefull in protecting IP owners from unfair competition, and idea theft. The current conflict at hand is one the unresolved issues from the commercialization of the web. The web having its roots in acadamia, was created with the idea that knowledge should be given to whoever may seek it, this contrast with the idea of proprietary technology, which seeks to gain profit from their knowledge. However this is not the issue. The issue is should we use proprietary technology in a open standard, given that the IP owner is the controller of that technology. I think we should keep all web standards free, the growth of the web is the all the proof we should need. It proofs that information is more valueble if shared. Patents that should be included in the web standard should liceneced freely to anyone who wishes.

Whole papers have been written on the topic of intelectual property rights, this however is just a brief summary on my views.

Please reply to this comment, I would like anyone to point out any obvoise errors in this text.

  12. DCMA on FatWallet Strikes Back Using DMCA · · Score: 1

Perhaps this is a good thing. Recently we have all heard of many companies using the DCMA to try to bully smaller companies/individuals. Usually the basis for the lawsuits seems to be clearly not be with the intention of the law itself. Hopefully with all the publicity around the DCMA by these companies the courts will finally realize how ambiguois, and full of loopholes this law really is. From what I have read about the law, the law seems to restrict free speech and fair use. I fully understand that an artist should have a right to protect his work, but it seems many companies want us to be a society of consumers. Hopefully the law will be replaced with something that is benificial to both the artists and the consumers.
