Actually we work for others because most of us used to be farmers but no longer are and due to massive population increases.

Well, if he gets what he wants I'm looking forward to spending more time reading, exercising, cooking decent meals, and getting outside. Already my TV viewing, cd listening, and movie watching is at an all time low. Thanks Mr Valenti!

  4. Self destructive industry move on Predicting The End Of Digital Copying · · Score: 2

I can only see a few ways this could go if they got everything they wanted:

    1. People stop upgrading their equipment to avoid having their cd/dvd/etc collections become unusable. The electronics industry chokes on the drop in sales.

    2. People stop collecting lots of cds/dvds to avoid the hassles of registering them to a new machine, etc and instead carefully purchase a small number. The media industries choke on the drop in sales.

    3. Since the media industries would have to support a licensing tracking service for the public they do a shoddy job of it since they figure they'll sell more anyway if people have to buy new cds/dvds every time they get a new player instead of being able to use the old discs. See the result of #2.

Not if the water cooling the system is at the ambient temperature (room temp). The radiator's purpose is to equalize the temp of the coolant with that of the surrounding environment. Condensation wouldn't be a problem unless you were actively refrigerating the coolant.

Wouldn't it be cheaper really to just buy a faster CPU? By the time you go through all that cost and effort to squeeze a few more cycles out of the cpu you could've spent less (time and $) on a faster one by design that doesn't have to sit in a bucket of goo to run.

  9. Who replies to spam? on The Continuing Rise of E-Mail Marketing · · Score: 2

I think it would be interesting to send out a spam message like all of the "make money now!" folks but for the purposes of finding out who replies to these things. Maybe 2 flavors, a porn one and a greed one. This would require committing spammage (is that a word?) but it would be in the name of sociological research. It could even be set to reply to responses with a slap-on-the-wrist message, "Don't be a fool and reply to spam!" or such.

  16. Europe after WWII on In Case of Armageddon, Break Out the GIS · · Score: 2

The issue of cities dealing with massive devastation has already happened many times throughout history. Whether from earthquake (Lisbon, San Francisco), fire (Tokyo, Chicago), war (Berlin, Dresden) or even nuclear attack (Hiroshima, Nagasaki) the goal was never to make a cookie cutter duplicate of the previous structures like the city was some sort of museum piece.

Cities such as Dresden picked those structures that were the most distinctive and historically/artistically significant and rebuilt those (opera house, great churches) but didn't try to rebuild 1800s housing. The rebuilt cities actually benefited from the opportunity to rebuild from scratch, eliminating decades of patchwork utilities and building. Of course the key is to have a plan that is human in scale, fitting with the culture, and for the benefit of residents and not just for state (East Berlin's Stalinist concrete apartment blocks) or commercial interests.

  17. Re:Speech != language on Mutant Gene Responsible for Speech? · · Score: 2

But the mechanisms in the brain would not have continued to develop if they were not spurred on by the physical ability to speak. The complexity and manner of communicating would have been severely limited if it was just reduced to a few hundred visual signals (at best). I doubt that something as abstract as culture or religion could have evolved without speech. American Sign Language is not a proper example as it was created by an already established world of speaking/hearing people and the deaf have all the physical and mental capabilities for full speech even if they don't use them.

  18. I knew it! on Mutant Gene Responsible for Speech? · · Score: 2

Judging from some people's speaking abilities I'd say the process of developing speech is still in flux.

  19. Cheaper and easier solution on Tracking Your Employees, Children · · Score: 2

The simplest solution is to just chop off your kid's feet and stick them in front of the TV until they are ready for college. No more parental worries!

Seriously though, people have got to stop getting their worldview from the media. 500 kids a year disappearing (the vast majority at the hands of divorced parents) out of the millions of kids is pretty small when you look at the number who die from such unglamorous fates such as car accidents or fires. People need to maintain perspective.
