"I don't think anybody buys stuff online from big brick and mortar chains anyway."
I buy stuff online from REI for store pickup frequently. Usually it is because they didn't have it in stock at the store. The outdoor gear biz is one example of a business where you really don't see much variation between online and store prices. Maybe it is because it is a limited market?
Prices in stores can be pretty competetive when you start taking shipping costs into account. Especially for heavy items or when you are buying lots of small items that have to be shipped seperately. I always have to remind people about that.
I can think of one good reason why the guy in the parent comment could have done that and that is if he sent a file for him to look at. You can't exactly do that over the phone. Though if he wanted to know if the other guy got it he could turn on receipts.
I whole heartedly agree with you on the use of email as a chat program. People who CC others just to say "Ok with me" should install a chat program. I hate having masses of email, each one including pages of quoted text, just to tag on a few words. It is good even for exchanging code snippets back and forth.
Email is vital for leaving a trail to review later (as people in Washington and on Wall St have found to their regret). I'm unlikely to write down ever detail from a meeting or phone call but I will search my email for some keyword to figure out how we handled something in the past.
One mistake I've noticed people making who use MS Outlook is that they use the preview viewer instead of opening the email. They end up with every letter always being marked unread so they can never tell at a glance if they have new mail.
Better yet, rebuilt AMC huts in the White Mtns of NH all have to be wheelchair accessable (since they are on federal land). There were 3 people I heard of who actually got up in chairs when the hut reopened. It took something like 25 people to help them. It added approx $50K to the cost of the hut. If you can get a chair up 5 miles of very rough mountain trail I don't see a doorway to the toilet stopping you.
I do hear it condemmed by my Muslim friend in CA, my old coworker from Turkey, my coworker from Somalia, etc. The only problem is that the media seems to prefer to broadcast ONLY the extremists. You see, interviewing reasonable people doesn't make for exciting news.
20th century!? Hell, you can't even get many religious people to believe in 4 billion years of evolution never mind recent history. If we can't get people to understand that the earth is more than 14000 years old then what hope is there to convince an anti-semite of the holocaust?

Yes
Making me feel cheated is a great way to keep my wallet closed.
"Sorry, we're all out of Goatse. Can I interest you instead in Hot Grits for $19.99?"
You think that is bad. Try looking for bargains at a place called CostCo.
So why are you still on /.? Could it be for the sparkling commentaries? ;)

The dead are communicating with us, and sending spam!?
I wore khaki pants to work and didn't get in an accident, ergo khaki pants prevent car accidents just like video games cause crime.
Bingo! As the number of available address shrinks let the squatting and bidding begin.
That's why is was all ASCII text pr0n back then. Nothing beat nudie pictures slowly appearing on a teletype terminal.
Is that why they keep saying "faster! FASTER!" in adult movies?
Even the dept of energy knew this. Didn't they find some servers at Los Alamos a few years back being used as pr0n servers?

All of the cool kids used the puppy.
I didn't see "putting useful comments in the code" on that dying skills list. ;)
I used to see Powerbuilder and Coldfusion in job ads in the 90s all the time. Surprised it died off so fast.
Link? What is this "recent study"?
I didn't have to reply and correct it.
"People do not make mistakes anymore, they only lie."
Shouldn't you be on a ledge somewhere?

They were too busy pointing fingers at each other and Hitler. "He did it! Not me"
Sorry, my mistake, it was only 30-40%. It was a survey by the Pentagon. Now I feel better.

Don't worry, the UK is well on its way to becoming a camera riddled police state.
And a recent poll showed that 80% of US soldiers approved of the use of torture.
Or at least stop him from clogging the courts with frivolous lawsuits. This guy is the Paris Hilton of lawyers; just a big attention whore.
