Downloads from the releases.mozilla.org site won't count toward the world record. Same for other FTP and HTTP mirrors. :( I sure wish they'd opted to serve all this from Amazon S3 or something to keep up with demand.

  2. The poor, misunderstood, semicolon... on Microsoft Edits English · · Score: 1
Actually, that last comma should not have existed and should be instead a full stop (read: period). Failing that, if it's starting a new related sentence fragment it could be a semicolon, but probably would have been better off as a dash of some sort (I think it's an em-dash that we're looking for, but I'm not totally up on my dash usage).

Regardless, punctuation does not equal grammar. (Though it is, admittedly, a great bone to pick at.) Beyond all the poor grammar running rampant in our world, there's also plenty of people who don't know how to type and thus don't respond to emails very quickly; a huge annoyance.

  3. Salon Premium on Salon Goes For Annoying Jump-Through Ads · · Score: 1
I think these folks are just hard up for cash. If you believe that any commercial publication can survive on subscription alone (such as Salon's premium -- read: sexy -- content), you're pretty naive. All print publications survive primarily by advertising. Subscriptions are a nice bonus, but they don't go far.

On the other hand, if Salon made their premium content available on AvantGo, I bet they'd get a few more subscribers. I've written 'em a letter to this effect too.

Hey, will their mobile edition have click-thru ads?

It's an interesting point, and worth thinking about.

However, how many Apache-based servers are running under Windows rather than *nix? It's been available for some time, yet most folks running Apache are doing so specifically to get out of the Microsoft hole.

Plus, in the case of open source software, a big part of it is being open. This applies to other OSes as well as within *nix-land. Sure some Mac users get to play with your toys (and let me tell you, I'm enjoying it!). This isn't the end of the world, particularly as Apple (and other commercial *nix vendors) are pretty in tune with the open source scene and their role in it.

What is more dangerous is if one of these companies starts breaking the GPL and extending the software (making it incompatible with open versions) and then pushing it as the standard. (Just as Microsoft has done with Java, web standards, etc...)

As ever, be vigilant, but don't bundle your undies just yet.

Actually, the GUI (as of 10.04, and I'm told as of 10.1 as well) gets fairly low priority. Plus you can always kill the GUI if you want to and just run Darwin (aka BSD). Depends on what you're trying to get out of the system.

    There are no innocents.

We perpetuate the capitalist agenda of our society, we benefit from the poverty of other nations, and (most of us) do nothing to alleviate the suffering of those whose labor allows us to prosper. As Bush has said to Afghanistan, if you aren't part of the solution, you are part of the problem.

While I do not condone the recent attacks, we cannot assume such a patronizing and self-righteous stance. We must have empathy for those who have been driven by their suffering and belief to such extremism. Unless we understand their plight, and take responsibility for our nation's past actions, we deserve nothing but scorn.

  7. iBook con Linux on Next-Gen Apples To Include 1394b, USB 2.0 · · Score: 2, Interesting
Linux-PPC and iBook are two great tastes that go great together. You get a snappy looking laptop (a matching ice-type Enlightenment skin completes the GUI-goodness) which is light as can be, and the power of Linux at your disposal. (Naturally, all typical problems with Linux-PPC are evident in this model -- namely a slight lag time in releases.)

At the same time, you can also play around with MacOS X, which is honestly the one OS which has made me ditch Linux entirely. I get the same robust server applications (Samba, Apache, MySQL and PHP, namely), a much better integrated GUI than any window manager has managed (pun intended) to build, and access to thousands of useful day-to-day applications.

Really, as a part-time Linux geek (and platform agnostic -- which means I like Macs because they're better **grin**), MacOS X is the best OS since sliced bread, and if you want a Linuxy laptop, get an iBook just for the chance to try it out!

In all other regards, an iBook is going to be comparable to a PC laptop when running Linux, but for standard configuration differences. Linux-PPC runs lightning quick on it, though.

Author's note: I'm experienced with running Linux on an original iBook, but I'm assuming device support for the latest models. Let the buyer beware and check the documentation.
