I started programming on the Tandy Model I over twenty years ago, but I am the first to admit that I use my computer to get work done. That means I like a nice GUI, I don't know Perl, and my attempts at piping still fail regularly. All that, despite using Linux for 5 years.
This is going to be offtopic -- sorry in advance. Yesterday, my GF, who speaks NO English, told me that, after trying to use Powerpoint with Thai menus, it is much more difficult than Kpresenter with English menus. The point is, she use KPresenter FIRST, and so the change is too difficult for her.
The new UI is based on inductive principles, called IUI. It is a serious revision in the thinking on how a UI should be set up from a user's perspective. You can go to www.redmondlinux.org and read the developer's opinion on this philosophy , why it should be developed and how he is implementing it in their Beta 2 release. (I submitted this as an article before XP, but it was "rejected." What does that mean?;))
If you come to Thailand, there are many available "Activation Disabled" versions, and you get Office XP bundled for free, as well. All are available on CD at a significant discount.
hehe
I guess when you say "I think Alan has done a wonderful job" and "
I am however quite glad that Alan will be able to concentrate on other things" that you don't realize that you are responding to his post, eh?
Tou have to be kidding! Who is moderating this stuff? "Let's not forget Clinton's Lincoln Bedroom hotel. Let's not forget his last minute pardons." is offtopic, but one answer to it is insightfuls and the parent to this is FLAMEBAIT? Use a brain cell.
The real issue here is that (see asteroid story above) we take a lot of conjecture, logic, and current semi-proven / popular theories, release them to the press when they aren't yet finished, and call them probable. Just because I base my outcome on six facts which I am 80% certain are right does not in any way make my result probable. What is.8^6 again? Finished calculating? Not so impressive.
From the Changelog for 21 to 21-3 (24-Feb-2000, current version is 22.0.2 (13-Oct-2001)
BIOS tester
-----------
Inspired by 'dparam.com', a much more extensive BIOS test program is included with this version. Called 'disk.com', it was developed under DOS, and requires' nasm' to be assembled. DISK.COM will probe the BIOS for disks supported by the BIOS, and report on their CHS geometry. If EDD is supported, the EDD geometry is also reported.
If disks with cylinder numbers of 1024 or above are detected, it will issue a recommendation to use LILO with the 'lba32' option.
Creation of the bootable floppy image version of this utility is incomplete at this time.
will boot from disks up to 2048Gb in size, as long as the BIOS allows
the Enhanced BIOS calls for 32-bit sector addressing using packet calls. Checks if BIOS supports packet calls (int 0x13, AH=0x42), and uses these calls if 'lba32' was specified. Otherwise, it uses the C:H:S addressings cheme of the original IBM-PC BIOS. The disk read routine is separated into its own source file, "read.S" which is included in the first-stage, and second-stage loader codes.
The first stage loader uses a very stripped down read routine, since it only deals in single sector transfers. If BIOS does not support 32-bit packet calls, and the cylinder address overflows when the 32-bit address is converted to C:H:S, then a "9f" error code is issued.
In short, LILO has solved this problem for some time now;)
I think he was talking about the gorgeous textured blue background with the nice white / black lettering, because there's no "red box" to be seen and hasn't been for some time. Check your facts
Similarly, There is no warrantee of any kind. If it breaks, you have no one to complain to: "you get what you pay for."
Just yesterday I was handed a new piece of Edusoft software for our department and asked my opinion. (I am an English teacher in a Thai university). The cost of this software is 360,000 Baht (about US$8,500 -- 14 months of my salary, for perspective). The "Teachers' Book" was so riddled with typos (like many of my posts) that it was difficult to understand. This made me question the content of the 13 CDs. It came with what they called a "dongle" for the parallel port to limit the number of machines it is installed on to the 10 in the site license. Thus, I was unwilling to test the software, because the new language lab is not set up and I would be wasting an installation on a non-mission computer. The point of all this is that, in the license, they held no responsibility for the software, including usability or accuracy. This is education software to teach language, and we are offered no recourse for any problems. I don't see that Open Source and Proprietary models are any different this way.

The other that you've missed is
4. Make your game online oriented, (like CS?) and charge fees for server use and / or server version of the software.
Finally, how can traditional software businesses compete with the multi-level marketing scheme of proselytizing users that become testers and developers and finally evangelists?
This strikes me as funny, because I have often compared the open source movement to Amway (in my mind only) where the major advertisement method is some less-than-credible word of mouth, an almost religious fervor, and the belief that, in 10 years, we will hold the whole market because of the revolutionary, yet, somehow, still exemplary of the thoughts of 1789, model we use.
In answer to this:
I teach English at a university in Thailand. At our teachers' meeting last week, the (new) French professor said he needs a french copy of windows so that he can actually TYPE in French. How long will this take? I don't know.
I happen to have a copy of DEMOLinux from a friend (I remember him complaing that StarOffice is in French) so the next day I brought is in and booted his computer with is. Except for being slow as sap, he was excited. Today I installed Mandrake 8.0 (French stock market, right?) and he watched and helped me translate the french so that I could do the install correctly. Checked the boot directly into his user box and reboot. He is typing in KWord (the ONLY thing he is interested in) and printing from his HP695C.
The point is -- I am an English teacher and he is a French teacher who told me up front that he knows next-to-nothing about computers, but when we booted into linux and I opened KWord for him, I wanted to show him how to handle the files (slightly different than Windows,eh?). He said, "No problem. It's looks just like Windows." I did virtually NO training with this guy, but let him know I will be happy to help him.
My summary -- I think we're not THAT far behind on the desktop for Joe user.

Hehe -- he was using the hard drive manufacturer's spec directly off of the box -- hehe
is there a GNU/DOJ now, as well?? Just wait till RS gets his dander up about this.

before you start to flame, please. Thank you
Mandrake went back to Lilo as default in 8.0
I found this interesting, because Mandrake went BACK to Lilo at 8.0 -- why is Red Hat going there now?

"I just like decent package management!!" tells ME you are already there, my friend..;)
If Microsoft is going to repeat their call for silence from the security orgs on this one.
So..............I teach (English) for a living, and everything looks fine. Subject = people / verb = are....????????
