  1. Re:Too bad Jake Kaufman (virt) is involved on MAGFest Documentary Sets Stage For Next Installment · · Score: 3, Informative

    Time for some facts (aka "the MAGFest chairman intervenes").

    We don't put Virt in charge of anything but his own panel, and his own music, both of which he has every right to be in control of. Please watch the video and come to the convention before you make any further judgements.

    Virt is in our concert because he is fully capable of performing, and there were a few others (Ailsean, prozax, Midee) that wanted to play as well, so we decided to try and get them all together to perform. The result was that we got great music from a bunch of fairly well-known remixers.

    MAGFest exists for gamers to have fun. Virt's comment that egos are checked at the door may not hold for everyone, but it definitely held for a lot of everyone, including our guests, and yes, including Virt. Our guests don't have celebrity complexes, and our attendees are expected to respect their opponents in tournaments whether they win or lose. MAGFest is not a warzone, it's a way to unwind and chill with like-minded gamers.

    If you have a grudge against Virt because of what he said regarding ocremix four years ago, take his advice and consider meeting him in person with an open mind. On the same note, if your comment is ocremix-related, please realise that MAGFest doesn't favor one site over the other, we invite both ocremixers and vgmixers alike to come and chat about what they do at our game remixing roundtable.

    Alright. Enough of that. I hope everyone is enjoying the documentary.

  2. Another convention people might like on Vintage Computer Festival Revisits The PC Past · · Score: 1

    If you guys like this, you might also be interested in MAGFest, a convention I run. It's more of a gaming con than anything else, but we plan on having a lot of classic hardware there, including a guy that's bringing tons of C64 stuff.

    And then there's me, with my voodoo2/12M. You can buy them for $10. It even runs games at a playable framerate, along with all the other opengl software I run on it.

    My card has open source drivers, and even if it's 5 years old, it works. =] I'll upgrade someday.

  4. netshow_linux (aka. old winmedia-format player) on RealNetworks Licenses MS Windows Media Codec · · Score: 2

    The copy of netshow linked here is capable of playing MPEG4v1 (but not MPEG4v2/v3), H263, and Duck Truemotion 2 video streams, raw, MPEG layer3, ADPCM and I think it also has support for some vivo audio codecs.. But, I am sure about MPEG4v1. If there were a way to get this binary to utilise codecs from mplayer2/win32 such as WMA or MPEG4v2, at least, we would be on our way.

    * Netshow for Linux

    I don't think the file is actually gzipped, but, it has the extension. Recommend attempting gunzip but just renaming if it fails. Off to find another hack to get mplayer2 to work..

  5. Re:Fork U. on AMD Announces 1GHz Athlon Imminent · · Score: 1

    Dear AC:

    Your criticism would be much more believeable if you (1) offered reasons to back you up, (2) checked your facts, (3) learned to spell your competition's product names, even if you didn't like them, and (4) offered some sort of proof you had tried this yourself.

    I currently agree with you that the G4 is a very advanced processor, especially next to the x86 line of processors, but have you actually played with an Athlon? Another thing you may want to consider is cost.
