MAGFest Documentary Sets Stage For Next Installment

Thanks to an anonymous reader for pointing to information on a freely downloadable documentary about the MAGFest 2.0 videogame festival, which "took place... on October 31st to November 2nd of the year 2003... in Williamsburg, Virginia", and includes interviews with videogame remixers, fighting game champions, and footage from "an outstanding Minibosses set." The 155mb DivX is available via BitTorrent [direct link], and is produced by X-Strike Studios - it will be included as a bonus on their forthcoming unofficial River City Rumble DVD, described by a delighted previewer as "the Citizen Kane of films based on martial-arts video games." The documentary also servers as a trailer for this year's MAGFest, to be held "Friday through Sunday, the 1st through the 3rd of October... [also] in Williamsburg, VA."

I really want to go this year, but it's a 30 hour drive away from where I live, and it costs to much to fly down for a few days.

Also make sure to check out the excellent OneUp Mushrooms who I think played at magfest 2002 (not sure about 2003).

seriously, did you even go to the site? he's a guest for the concert. how does that translate to 'administrative capacity'?

please be informed, or be quiet.

Isn't the "Citizen Kane of films" actually "Citizen Kane"? That's up there with heroin being the opiate of the people.

Did you even read the intro text? It quite explicitly calls it: "the Citizen Kane of films based on martial-arts video games." (emphasis mine.)

Unless you think Citizen Kane involved Ninjas and spawncampers, there is nothing wrong with that sentence.

Don't know about you, but I seem to remember Orson Welles kicking some serious double dragon ass in black and white in that movie, so my comment still stands. Court or Plaza, hardball?

ok, thanks for warning everyone, but...

what you should REALLY do is ask the few hundred people that went to the past 2 magfests what i'm like in person. i've been at both so far, in no administrative position. you'll be surprised. there were no "run-ins".

in fact, a few dyed-in-the-wool virt-haters have become friends (one a close friend) as a result of meeting me in person and finding out that i'm surprisingly friendly and laid-back, totally the opposite of what they expected. likewise i found them to be awesome too. you can miss out on a whole lot of someone's personality online, but when you're face to face, all the bickering seems totally retarded, and it evaporates in seconds. granted, i'm sure there are a few real pricks out there who are total dickheads in person too, but that's seriously not my style.

i wish you would join us, because you'd have an amazing time, guaranteed. there's just so much cool stuff to take in. i have no idea who you are, but i've obviously pissed you way off, and this is a perfect chance to put it all behind us.

at the past two magfests i held good-natured, interesting discussions on the game music industry. i answered questions and gave what few insights i have gathered so far on doing this for a living. i don't do it to brag or show off! i do it because people are curious and i can explain it without being patronizing or making them feel dumb. my dad's a science teacher, i guess i inherited that from him, because he's the same way.

i'm really sorry that you've heard "horror stories" and sorrier still that you'd perpetuate them, but i shouldn't have to defend my character in this way. you should definitely not steer people away from a great event because i called you names on IRC or whatever. that's not really fair, you're missing facts.

seriously, come join us in october!

guhhh, reading my reply, i probably shouldn't have even responded in the first place. but i really have to make it perfectly clear that we CHECK OUR EGOS AT THE DOOR. it just doesn't factor in at all.

these conventions are things you keep with you for the rest of your life, just unbelievably good memories. it's REALLY not cool to try to deny us that, sight unseen.

Time for some facts (aka "the MAGFest chairman intervenes").

We don't put Virt in charge of anything but his own panel, and his own music, both of which he has every right to be in control of. Please watch the video and come to the convention before you make any further judgements.

Virt is in our concert because he is fully capable of performing, and there were a few others (Ailsean, prozax, Midee) that wanted to play as well, so we decided to try and get them all together to perform. The result was that we got great music from a bunch of fairly well-known remixers.

MAGFest exists for gamers to have fun. Virt's comment that egos are checked at the door may not hold for everyone, but it definitely held for a lot of everyone, including our guests, and yes, including Virt. Our guests don't have celebrity complexes, and our attendees are expected to respect their opponents in tournaments whether they win or lose. MAGFest is not a warzone, it's a way to unwind and chill with like-minded gamers.

If you have a grudge against Virt because of what he said regarding ocremix four years ago, take his advice and consider meeting him in person with an open mind. On the same note, if your comment is ocremix-related, please realise that MAGFest doesn't favor one site over the other, we invite both ocremixers and vgmixers alike to come and chat about what they do at our game remixing roundtable.

Alright. Enough of that. I hope everyone is enjoying the documentary.
