True dat. Having to upgrading the RAM on some Pavillion (I don't remember the exact model number), you had to pull a lever and jiggle the front of the case off, then slide out the drives (and the hard drive on a seperate rack) just to get to the motherboard/RAM. Insane.

Internet Explorer is a superior browser to anything out there.

Why are people making such a fuss over IE being part of Windows, or any other "features" for that matter? Why isn't anyone going after Apple for releasing/distributing so many tools (iPhoto, iMovie, iCrap, whatever) for their OS?

Also, IE and Explorer are basically intergrated code. You could remove IE's icon from the desktop, and make it so no URL's could be entered into the location bar.. but I guess that isn't "uninstalled" enough for some people?

Besides, no one's forcing you to use Internet Explorer. If you don't like it, install Netscape or Oscar or whatever the hell you want. Sheesh.

My mailto: links are working fine here. Opens up Outlook with a blank e-mail. You have to download the Java VM because of the whole Sun/Microsoft issue. (As well as download an update to Quicktime, which didn't use ActiveX, due to issues with Netscape). You can't blame Microsoft for those reasons.

I really don't see what people's problems with XP are. If you don't want MSN Explorer, uninstall it. Add/Remove programs. Bam, you're done.

Why don't people check out this stuff before posting it?

No people, you cannot copyright phone tones, or a certain sequence of them, much less 100,000,000,000 or whatever insane number they're claiming.

Because Quicktime is a good "all-around" solution, for streaming and for download, as well as having primitive "copy protection" (You're not able to re-save protected Quicktimes, etc.) Sorenson is an amazing codec, which can provide excellent quality for it's size.

I suppose they could release it in MPEG or MPEG2, but the bitrate require to attain the quality you see in the quicktime would easily make this not worthwhile. I'd rather download a 30 meg Quicktime than a 150 meg MPEG or MPEG2.

Why not DiVX? For one, it's not a "consumer" codec or solution. How many average joes out there do you think really have the DiVX4 codec installed, or even know what a codec is? And secondly, it lacks the features that Quicktime/RealMedia offer (DRM, "copy protection", Streaming, etc.) as well as lacking an overall "professionalism".

I have a Win2k Server sitting next to me that has been up (really fully up) for almost a year. If you know what you're doing, you can build a stable and reliable server/box in Windows. Fairly easy actually. It's running IIS, Exchange, and SQL server. Gigabyte of RAM, P3-800. ASUS P3B-F motherboard. The Intel i440BX chipset rocks.

  13. IIS and Updates on Gartner Group Suggests Dumping IIS For Now · · Score: 1

The truth is, IIS isn't a bad web server. Why everyone makes it out to be is beyond me. Everything has exploits. Everything is going to have "patches" or "fixes". If you properly configure your IIS server (remove "internet printer" ISAPI driver, default directories, etc.) and make sure security measures are in place (Running OS on a different partition/security than the "inetpub" partition).. and keep up with the patches (by checking Shavlik's personal security advisor or by using Microsoft's HotFix checker) you'll be fine. It's amazingly stupid that the patches to protect against CodeRed came out almost a year ago, along with patches to protect against NIMDA. It's ridiculous if someone, who is knowingly running IIS on a server (NT4 or otherwise) does not keep up with such fixes. Now then again, there are a lot of people who install Win2k with default options.. and that includes IIS (I believe so anyhow?).. and in that case, the user most likely will not know to keep up with patches/hotfixes. Then again, Windows 2000 isn't a "consumer" OS, it's meant for a business environment where hotfixes/patches/systems should be managed by an IT staff.
