  1. Re:Completely ineffective... on Million E-mail March · · Score: 1
What they should do is put up a page where you can enter your name & address, and perhaps customize the message. Then when you submit, they print it, put your name & address on it, and drop it in the mail.

Probably less of an effect than regular letters, but definitely more impressive than just plain old email, and not a bit harder for the average joe to do.

Of course they WOULD hae to pay for something like that out of pocket, but then again, there may be a number of people interested in the law being passed who wouldn't mind sponsoring the project.

  2. Increased market on Sun Considers Switching Cobalt to Solaris · · Score: 1
Wouldn't the switch boost the market share of solaris quite a bit? I mean I'm not sure what the installation rate for Qubes is, but I imagine that they're quite a large portion of the virtual and dedicated server hosting market. With this shift, Sun is assured to get that market share for the price of whatever efforts are expanded in porting the OS (which they may have already done anyway).

With a larger installed base, Solaris becomes a more appealing platform to develop for, and even the traditionally linux-targeted efforts such as Apache would probably pay more attention to it. So with the increased market share, sun can consievably hope to increase application support.

That's not mentioning the ready market for whatever upgrades they'd be willing to provide. They get more control over what software is run on their hardware. Sounds like a pretty good business decision.

scan a book: if you are lucky (i.e. if it's been on the NYT besteller list in the past month or so), you'll be taken to the publisher's site. the front page of it. if, not (almost any other book) they'll tell you you've ACTUALLY MANAGED to find a UPC they don't have, and will offer you to do their dirty job for them by entering the info about it.

scan a frappuccino bottle: and you get taken to the pepsi cola site. what starbucs has to do with pepsi is beyound my meager grasp...

the part where they don't know what the hell a UPC is for comes up more often than you'd expect, given the surprized wording on that page. Perhaps they could use a central database themselves :)

  6. Glide wrappers on 3dfx Does OpenGL · · Score: 2
Well, when the Glide wrappers first started to come out, 3dfx slammed down hard on them, modified the SDK lisencing agreement, etc, so not much inroads could be made into the field. But if you remember, Creative did come out with a driver for their nVida board that would support Glide, allthough at a less than stellar performance. 3dfx sued them too, if memory serves me right.

Now imagine if that had not happened. Because it is an added feature, it's possible that other manufacturers would get on the bandwagon as well, and a Glide driver could have become just as much a standard for any new 3D hardware as an OpenGL one is. I'm sure the simlicity of the API, and its relatively broad distribution would make Glide a more popular platform than it currently is.

And because cards other than Voodoo would have this support in the software layer, whereas 3dfx has theirs built into the hardware, they'd win out on performance for any Glide title.

  7. I hope they finally do it... on 3dfx Does OpenGL · · Score: 1
I have been buying 3dfx cards all along (ever since my horrible Voodoo Rush), simply to get the Glide compatibility... Glide, especially in the early days was a pretty good way to program in 3D, and from what i heard, easy to learn. So if any grassroots project had 3D, Glide would be the first thing supported. (Kinda like Gravis Ultra-Sound in the Demoscene, back in the day).

Now while Glide is not as popular even among programmers (i guess it's because 3dfx decided to market their own boards), there are still a bunch of good apps floating around there that are worthwhile looking at on a Voodoo board.

If 3dfx was any smarter about this, they'd embrace all the Glide wrappers out there to make the standard more popular. Then more programmmers would write to it, since it would mean a bigger target audience than it has now. But the results would be better and faster on a Voodoo board because they were designed from the ground up around Glide. Now, because they tried to fight Glide emulation, 3dfx is pretty much a has been.

The "limitation" is a good thing. Because of the lack of variables such as different versions of video cards/OSes/drivers/periferals/kitchen sink you can generally play console games out of the box. And the troubleshooting guides will never offer "reinstalling windows" as a possible solution to lack of sound.

Now, granted, consoles may not be as cost-efficient compared to PCs today as much as they were five years ago, but if someone is looking for a great looking game with not an overly elaborate amount of depth and zero hassle, consoles are still the way to go.

Failing that, we could simply try to register a "method for unsupervized plending of small pets" as a broader patent. Anyone who's ever used a blender to get back at their kitten for peeing on the rug will have to pay up!

I have the game, and just love the music. It has that nice tribal/ambient quality to it. Unfortunately the game was released in '93, and in game music is all FM-Synthesized. Virgin released a soundtrack CD to the game, with all the songs professionally recorded, but it went out of production in '94, and is now almost impossible to find. (It's sought after by many dune afficianados, and I would love to get my hands on it, or at least some MP3 tracks. Email me if you can give me any info on it.)

So imagine my surprise when I find one of the songs from the game, remixed with top-notch quality and very true to the original.

    Oh, happy day! :)

You know, the more I think about it, the less I think of this as a neccessarily bad thing... I mean, OK, so AOL, the closest thing to an internet monopoly has bought a yet another program... But in this case, unlike with Netscape or ICQ, there is little leverage to be gained by doing so.
The MP3 standard isn't likely to change because of the aquisition, and the company hardly has the power to erase all of those free copies of Winamp already spread on everyone's computers. If you don't like AOL (As I do), just don't get the next version... In my case, I stopped getting new versions of winamp as soon as they added that mini browser for Amazon.com...
I'm just glad that the guys at Nullsoft finally got paid for their efforts. I mean face it, how many of you registered winamp after 14 days? This way, AOL picks up the tab.
So what if they buy up Winzip too? Is the zip file format likely to change? I doubt it, and as long as it doesn't, nobody's forcing you to upgrade to the AOL branded version of the program. If they do decide to change the format, who's going to support it with so much of the software compatible with the old standard?
Therefore, I think that the only way for AOL to make money on items such as Winamp or WinZip is to somehow sell ads to go right into the program, something that Nullsoft has already done by including the mini-browser...
