What the parent poster meant...

MythTV 0.20 Released
·
· Score: 2, Insightful
...is that MythTV could use a bit of exposure to the great masses of people out there who are completely unaware of this software, yet who could use it to their benefit. The parent understands the purpose of the release notes while observing that something else could help the program more.
I think that's what they are hoping for. Look at the multitude of movies that are now available on DVD. You can now get nonsense collections like the pack of 50 Drive-In movies and 50 Monster movies I picked up from Best Buy a couple of weeks ago. These collections had such "hits" as Wasp Woman, Attack of the Bee Girls, and Zombie Black Exorcist! That last title is NOT a joke, though the movie is.
I think the studios see the end of DVD in sight and are now trying to pump out as much content as they can before the opportunity dies. I don't think it's a coincidence that Lucas has released the Star Wars original trilogy on DVD twice now. I think he sees this as an opportunity to get some sales in a dying, lesser quality format before he can pimp his audience again with a higer definition product with stronger DRM.
He knows DVDs have been cracked, but still needs to generate sales in this lower quality format.
Porn. Oh, yeah, Baby! The great thing about DVDs was that it enabled the user to quickly jump to the scene in Disclosure where Jean Tripplehorn in nude rather than scan through a tape for that one scene.
What does either of the new hi-def formats offer that is comparable to that?
Will any of the porn studios want this if their *stars* look worse, as you point out? My guess is only if the "content protection" is NOT broken.
The brown spot and the white speck are mentioned just so people can have an apples to apples comparison point.
But, yeah, like you I wonder WHY I would want to have to repurchase my collection of movies for something that has a GREAT image (if you have a television that supports it) and little else.
To be honest, I don't want DVD Jon to waste his time with this new format. I think in a few years these devices will be like Quadrophonic stereos and amplifiers from the 1970s.
I'll probably build a computer to meet these specs within the next five years, but until my current computers die or fail to perform some necessary function these specs will have to wait.
BTW, are you sure you want to buy BluRay or HDDVDs?
I saw 2001: A Space Oddysey in high definition on HD Movies last July. It looked beautiful. I have the DVD and I watched it after the premiere just to compare the images. The hi-def version was sharper and the colors were brighter. In fact, if you have the DVD and a hi-def television watch the segment where Dr. Heywood Floyd is traveling to the moon base. A stewardess receives a tray of food. Pay attention as she pulls the straws from the tray with her left hand. On the inside of her left forearm there is a brown spot that is clearly visible on the hi-def version. On the DVD you have to know it's there to see it.
It's the same for a white speck on Dr. Floyd's jacket just above his left collar bone when he is addressing the group at the moon base. It's clearly visible in hi-def, but again, you have to know it's there to see it on the DVD.
So what does all this mean for someone like me?
As good as hi-def is, it's not good enough for me to buy 2001 again.
I bought it on DVD even though I already own it on Betamax tape because the DVD not only looked sharper, it also allowed me to start the movie quickly and skip to any section of the film I liked.
I'm curious as to why you would even want hi-def disks since they have only the improved image and nothing else.
NOTE TO DUMB AS A FUCKIN' ROCK "CONTENT OWNERS"! Why is it that any DVD I bought a few years ago allows me to start the movie immediately, or go to any section I want, when any movie I've PURCHASED WITH MY FUCKIN' MOVIE, YOU DIPSHIT, puts me through an FBI screen and ungodly advertisements. IF YOU IGNORANT FUCKS WOULD GET YOUR HEADS OUT OF YOUR ASSES AND REMOVE THIS SHIT FROM BLURAY AND HDDVD I MIGHT BE TEMPTED TO BUY THIS SHIT, BUT SINCE YOU WON'T, FUCK OFF!
Yes, I'm more than a little bit pissed off by this.
It's what CEOs and other top executives have written into their contracts. If they fire her they may have to pay X-multiples of a million dollars to her.
I used to work for a VP at a Fortune 500 company. When the company wanted to get rid of him they moved him, laterally, from a position where he had six direct reports and about 50 people below him to...
...an empty office...
...with zero direct reports and no one below him, not even a sexretary.
They harrassed him repeatedly and gave him objectives he could not complete on his own. Over time his evaluations declined as he was unable to complete his objectives. He left of his own free will before further damage could be done to his file.
This is how you get rid of people with golden parachutes. It takes time.
I grieve for the mother and the surviving daughter. I wish them well, but I don't know that this will accomplish ANYTHING.
There have been plenty of sick creatures such as the Boston Strangler and too many others I've read about and forgotten and who were active BEFORE the internet.
Computer World had an article this week, written by Eric Lai. The title is "Linuxworld: SUSE Linux-equipped ThinkPads target chip designers". The date of the article is August 15, 2006.
In the article it specifically states: The two companies emphasized that the laptops are not targeted at consumers or even Linux diehards, who can buy the T60p but would still have to install SUSE or another Linux variant by themselves.
Later it states: Intel served as the primary beta tester for the SUSE-equipped notebooks and is expected to eventually buy "thousands" of the laptops, according to Bill lori(sic), worldwide manager for ThinkPads at Lenovo.
Later, the article states: But with Lenovo, enterprise customers give their configuration preferences and other software requirements to Novell, which will build a custom version of SLED 10 for them adn send it to Lenovo, which then installs it onto the laptops. Lenovo will also install other applications, including EDA or CAD application, and ensure that they don't break any drivers or crash the operating system, lori(sic) said.
The high price for these laptops is to pay for all of this customisation. Not so expensive when you consider what you're getting. Also, a nice move on Intel's part to distance themselves from Microsoft.
MANY people did point out that we were exchanging our privacy for an illusion of security back when metal detectors were first made mandatory to prevent hijackings. It was obvious to many of us that these new intrusions were based on false logic and that anyone who was serious and wanted to hijack a plane could do so.
Lo, and behold, September 11, 2001 shows up and a group of dedicated people does what "no one would ever anticipate" and hijack several planes with nothing more than metal box-cutters. Yes, that's right. The blades in box-cutters are made of metal. Yes, that's right. The hijackers were carrying legitimate identification. Yes, that's right. They all passed through the rigorous inspections that we had all been told would make us safe way back in the 1970s.
What makes you think this new set of intrusions, even given better technology, will make the skies any safer?
If someone is serious about hijacking one or more planes, there is NOTHING the TSA can do about it.
Until after the fact, when they impose NEW regulations to make the skies safe once again.
No evolutionist who knows what he is talking about would ever claim that humans evolved from apes. The correct phrase is humans AND apes have a COMMON ancestor.
Humans are humans, apes are apes, and monkeys are monkeys. You can tell monkeys from apes and humans by their prominent tails.
It is very sad that some textbooks do include a phrase along the lines of humans ascended from apes. Inclusion in a text book does not make it an accurate statement.
Humans and apes evolved separately from a common ancestor. Apes went their way, and we went ours.
Please keep this in mind when you are discussing evolution with friends and foes. Humans and apes share a common ancestor. If we can get this across, we will have won a battle in this long fought war over ignorance.
On a sheet of paper draw a very bold X, and then a few inches away draw a very bold triangle. You don't have to be precise with the inches. Just keep in mind that the closer the two images are, the closer you will have to hold the paper to see the effect.
Now hold the paper out so that the two images are parallel to the floor and visible to you.
Close one eye and focus the open eye on the object closest to your nose.
Slowly bring the paper closer to your face. Don't move your open eye! Keep it focused on the image and be aware of the other image, but don't shift your eye to see it.
Shortly you should notice that the second image has disappeared from your vision.
Congratulations, you have found where your retina folds into your optic nerve! This is a natural blind spot in all humans. You can't see anything along the line from your optic nerve to the invisible, to you, image.
What the parent poster is saying is that to make up for the loss of resolution, and this blind spot your brain collects data and literally fills in the blanks!
...this automatic update others have spoken of. I never play my PSP while plugged into the AC. As you stated, if I wanted to play while plugged into a wall I would just use a more powerful machine connected to a much larger screen with higher resolution.
Anyway, thank you for the post. You've shed a little light onto this murky subject without flaming anyone.
As I stated above, your post inspired me to do a search for "devhook". I did find devhook 0.44 and have downloaded it. I will have to get a.RAR decompressor but I anticipate much fun tonight installing and testing devhook.
As I state in my response to SuperKendall, I originally bought my PSP for games, but not finding any games beyond Ridge Racer for the first couple of years I bought a Neuros II so that my money would not be a total waste.
Since that time I have bought two games that I thought might be worth the money. The games were clearly labled for PSP use. They will not run on my PSP.
Yes, I can update the firmware, but then I lose the use of my PSP for viewing videos which is something I now enjoy. This should not surprise you. Sony marketed the PSP as a multiple use device that would allow us to view videos along with playing games. Unfortunately I have a perfectly good DVD player so I don't see any need to spend an additional US$20.00 for DVDs I already own. Oh, excuse me, I meant UMDs.
Besides, why should I have to update my firmware to play games that are clearly labeled for use with MY PSP? How am I to know that if I update my firmware that I will not lose the ability to play Ridge Racer?
Oh, one last thing; you misspell represent and use that for your name, yet you critisize my online name? Do you own Sony stock or work for them?
I have recently bought two games for my PSP: Ghost In The Shell and an anthology of old games. Neither will run on my PSP with the factory installed firmware. All I see when I try to run either of these disks is a error message stating that the games are not compatible with my firmware. There are no instructions for loading an update from the disks.
You may be right. Such instructions may be there, but I don't see them on my PSP. Maybe my firmware is too old. I bought my PSP the first day they went on sale.
Do you work for Sony or own a lot of Sony stock? I ask because your last two sentences seem very hostile for someone who does not have a personal interest in the fortunes of the Sony Corporation.
I bought it for games but for the first two years there was nothing beyond Ridge Racer that inspired me to want to pay for them. In the interim I have bought a Neuros II and now use it to watch MPGs of television shows during my morning commute to work.
Since then I have bought two games; Ghost In The Shell, and a collection of ancient Midway games. Neither works with my PSP.
I hope you have an open mind and can see how someone who has bought a machine with one purpose in mind can change the primary purpose for that machine while retaining an interest in the previous purpose.
I have the misfortune of being an owner of a Sony PSP. I have decided against updating the firmware on my PSP to retain control of it. You can imagine how pissed off I was when I discovered that a new game (finally something I wanted to play after TWO years of waiting) I bought would NOT play on my original PSP.
What really pisses me off about Sony is that I bought MY PSP primarily as a game machine. I have every Game Boy from the original through the Game Boy Advance and they ALL have backwards compatibility! I can play my Bionic Commando cartridge on any Game Boy I have, but Sony has decided that they will produce and sell games that are labeled for the PSP but will not play on my original PSP.
I'm not one who cares about the arguments between XBox fanboys and PlayStation fanboys and GameCube/Wii fanboys, but Sony can kiss my ass for their treatment of PSP owners.
Once again, thank you for posting some information to enable me to search for cures for my predicament. You have just done more for me as a PSP owner than Sony has done in all the time I have owned one.
...correct you.
There is no such thing as an "egg cell". Human females produce Oocytes. They are not considered to be cells because they do not have a complete genetic package. Human males produce spermatocytes. They are not cells either for the same reason.
While I'm on the subject, there is no such thing as a red blood cell or white blood cells. These objects are corpuscles, or bodies, not cells because they have no genetic material.
The value of seeing someone similar to yourself excelling in a given field does wonders for self esteem and self confidence.
If Einstein's first wife participated in the 1905 papers and was never given credit for such an incredible accomplishment, women were indeed deprived of a role model.
Yes, women can look to Victor Weisskopf, Richard Feynman, and Wolfgang Pauli for inspiration, but it is NOT the same, especially considering that a woman, Mileva Einstein, may have co-authored the greatest physics papers of the twentieth century.
...1905 papers we should give her credit in the history of physics. Her name should be as well known as his.
I personally don't care about his personal life, but I am intrigued by the idea that Marie Curie may not have been the only phenomenal woman of her generation. That women of the last century did NOT have access to a potentially phenomenal role model disturbs me.
I don't care how much pussy he got or where it came from, but my image of him is hurt IF it is true that his first wife helped him and generations of young women were deprived of a role model.
It's called suspension of disbelief. Science fiction and fantasy stories start out with a lot of it. Romance novels have much less. Traditional literature gets even less.
No matter how much you start out with you must never cross the line and have a character do something that is inconsistent with the world in the story. You cannot have a character from The Heart Is A Lonely Hunter leap into the air and fly. You MIGHT be able to get away with that in a Star Trek story.
The US has a quota of allowable immigrants from each foreign country. The quota of some Asian countries are hit very early each year so many of them will immigrate to a far South Latin America country such as Brazil or Chile which doesn't send so many people to the US and use their unfilled quotas to enter the US.
I know this because I met a couple of Chinese guys who explained to me how they originally came to the US. It takes a few years, but it's still faster than waiting for an opening from Hong Kong or Taiwan.
The Feds did not need to stake out Wal-Mart. All they had to do was wait, out of sight, along the road on the way to Wal-Mart and arrest Mr. Koresh as he walked to the store. Even if he drove to Wal-Mart it is easy to set up and execute road blocks.
By doing that they would have put fewer people at risk and reduced the threat of resistance from Mr. Koresh even if he traveled with a few friends. A few dozen agents suddenly surrounding a group of walking people reduces reactions from the people being arrested.
Storming into someones home trying to serve a warrant will do nothing but stir up resentment and resistance. This should be avoided unless you're some woman trying to show the world what a big pair you have.
