Since these systems need a special key fob to work and the fobs can sell for hundreds of dollars to replace I see this as a bit of a money grab. I highly doubt that the actual cost to manufacture these fobs is more than a few dollars. This smells like a nice way to gain some extra markup.
What percentage of the GDP do those 1%-10% account for? How much influence on policy to the wealthiest account for? How many subsidies do the wealthiest get that the average person has no hope of seeing? Etc.
If the wealthiest control 50%+ of the money and power in the country isn't it fitting that they are paying 50%+ of the tax burden?
Actually all we need to do is get the supreme court to realize that money is not free speech. I don't see how some one can go into court (with a straight face) and say that their freedom of speech is impacted simply because there are limits on the amount of money that can throw at politicians. If that is the case I guess some one needs to go into court and argue that their freedom of speech is being affected because they don't have enough money to spend on buying politicians.
The thing is that we aren't talking about colonizing Mars yet. At some time the first ship that set sail into the great unknown waters of the ocean had no idea what actually lay ahead of them. They had absolutely no idea if they were ever going to see land. At least with Mars we know what we can expect to find. With the proper planning it is theoretically possible (but probably not practical) to send a manned mission to Mars with the supplies needed to survive indefinitely. The fact that we know that the people on this mission will never return home is actually more than the first person that sailed the oceans knew.
I'm not sure I would call this instinct just a conditioned response. Maybe we just need more quiet cars to finally realize that having your attention on texting isn't always the smarted way to walk.
Sure they don't charge you $30 for each of those programs but then they also have to charge you $50 for the lost revenue they get from the program company to put that bloatware on your computer.;-)
Not quite sure how comparing the OEM price that Dell can sell something for to the retail price at "Big Box Mart" translates into Dell charging for free software.
Sorry but this is totally wrong. Volume licensing is just that volume licensing. You could buy 100 PCs from one retailer and 100 Windows licenses from another retailer and then have your IT staff install the licenses on the computers. If you don't have a volume license and you put Windows on the 100 PCs then you have a problem. If you buy 100 PCs with OEM Windows installed, the OEM Windows is the license for that machine. If you buy 100 PCs with OEM Windows and then buy 100 Windows VLAs you just double paid for Windows for no reason (or you have 100 licenses you can use on another 100 machines).
So you spent "a fair amount of money and time finding and installing third party software to at least partially restore Win7 level of usefulness" when all you needed to do was Google "windows 8 start menu replacement". It would have directed you to classic shell (I believe this is the first link that comes up). A quick install and setting change to have the machine auto boot to the desktop (so you never have to see Metro if you don't want to) and you have your "Win7 level of usefulness".
If you have spent $1000 on a gaming rig and haven't figured out that a free start menu replacement program can eliminate the need to see the start screen (Metro) then I guess you have a right to complain.
So instead of doing the sensible thing and leaving your phone activity for a more appropriate place than behind the wheel of a vehicle I should tie up the court system and waste tax dollars. Are we really at the point where people just can't help being connected 24/7 to their phones?
So you think that if the federal government disappeared tomorrow that all the problems you mentioned would go away too? Isn't it more logical that all that mess will just filter down to the state, county and city levels?
So you would rather spend $250 for a 150GB SSD drive instead of $60 for the smallest magnetic drive you could get (lets assume 320GB) just so you can fill the drive and not feel like you are wasting storage space?
Actually if "want something that works almost like Windows XP or Windows 7" then get a start menu replacement installed on Windows 8 and have it boot directly to the desktop. All Microsoft needs to do to alleviate most of the problems with Windows 8 is bring back an actual start menu button (not a button that takes you to the Metro interface).
Actually the geologist learned more than the Mars rovers combined since the rovers didn't land on the moon. Its hard to learn more about the moon than a live person when you are millions of miles away.

So GE is a government funded entity as well!

I don't think I will be interested in buying a smart watch until they can go at least a year or two on one charge.

Hate to break it to you but XP is from this century. 8-)
Based on the picture in the article I wouldn't call that a laptop (open sourced or not).

16 bit software is only a problem if you are running the 64bit versions of Windows.

Some of us don't have room in our houses to put in a 50ft screen.
Besides at home you miss all the commercials before the previews. :-P

Tall screens do exist at commodity prices. Get a wide screen monitor that pivots and rotate it to portrait mode. Voila, a tall screen.
P.S. Sorry couldn't resist.
So because you don't like the Lenovo keyboard layout it is Microsoft's fault and somehow made it a standard?
Good one!

I guess I'm missing something here. What is the big deal if HDMI audio is turned off when using DVI since DVI doesn't carry an audio signal anyway?
I have to admit that I didn't read the article but...
It would be nice to see how closed access publishers fair by comparison.
