I think companies should foccus more on lower power displays, hard drives, and especially those evil (when it comes to power usage) cd/dvd drives (although using those alot on the road is generally not a good idea)
oh and to answer the question: vorbis sounds better at lower bitrates compared to mp3.. like at 128. But once you get to 196 or higher the difference is negligible (assuming you use good encoders)
As much as I like ogg, MP3 is the standard format right now. If you, for instance, encode your files as mp3... and you later buy one of those cd-players that can read mp3 cd's, you won't have to re-encode. Ogg is a new format so support for it is not high, so if you have portable devices in mind, go for mp3.
yes nullsoft did something very daring while owned by AOL, they released Gnutella. And we all know the kind of 'trouble' those programs have caused for big corporations, like AOL.:)
I hate to say it, but there aren't too many examples of companies who focuss on open source software who are making very much money. It is difficult for startups especially. I suggest people put the 100$ or so they would save by not having to purchase windows to good use by supporting the developers. If this thing works out, you won't need to dual-boot anymore anyway.
Hopefully it doesn't overshadow all of the hard work the XMMS people have done.
Who's to say the winamp people haven't done hard work either? Just because they have corporate sponsorship and their software is closed-source doesn't mean the software is 'bad'. Besides, if there are already good players available for linux, I doubt people would switch to a closed-source solution that does the exact same thing, unless it offered superior features of some kind. Anyway, this should be considered a good thing, as linux needs as much support as it can get when it comes to multimedia applications, and especially ones from big companies (in this case, AOL)
the internet in general is slower when lots of people are logged on, and 8-12pm is a popular time... I remember when I used dial-up, I used to get the most busy signals then and the worst connections.
Although some of what you said is funny, you included some pretty bad generalities in this post. What do you mean by 'the stench is right'? are you trying to say that all arabian people stink? That is a very bad stereotype. Normally racial jokes are modded down as -1 troll. Since most of what you said is funny, I think it is ok.. but watch out with the generalities.
Well one life could have already been lost in this war, had the spy plane that was supposedly shot down not been remote controlled, there would have already been a casualty. The job of spying is always risky business, and better we risk a machine than risk a human. So perhaps there is one area where technology has helped the millitary.
insert 'maybe we'll have something to run WindowsXP on properly' joke here
Seriously though, we'll need chips like this once we are doing holographic projection at home. That requires ALOT of cpu power. It's a way off, but it will happen eventually.
The reason child porn is deemed illegal is because real children are used to make it. However artificial child porn does not hurt a real person in order to create it. And it's silly to say that fake cild porn incites pedofiles to harm real children, because If someone was a pedofile they would collect real child porn anyway, not the computer generated kind. Just because some prudes don't like something doesn't mean it should be made illegal
All internet companies have a duty to stamp out spam. If they do not they get blacklisted. Maybe optusnet should try and do a better job at bringing joustice to spam throwers.
the way things are going, patents have become like like good domain names
everyone should get the best patents while they can
it's a patent free-for-all
and it has made quite a joke of the system
Windows, since version 1.0, is still not ready, yet they ship a new version every couple of years.

Polaroids #2 mistake: not catching on to the digital revolution
Polaroids #1 mistake: having Sinbad as their mascot

I just hope they don't adopt microsoft outlook as their official e-mail client

Seeing as china declared linux to be their official OS.. I would assume there is or will be a large deployment there

I suppose a geographer could look at the slashdot effect as equivelant to a 'random natural disaster' when mapping out the web.
