  1. Shell Scripting on Advice On Teaching Linux To CS Freshmen? · · Score: 1

I think that the heart of any OS is found on the command line. Yes, you need to learn vi(m) and maybe emacs, but I think that can be done by using them to do other tasks.

I developed my skills through shell scripting. A great book on the topic is Unix Shell Scripting by Stephen G. Kochan and Patrick H. Wood. The concepts are usable in just about any environment, plus they'll learn the main tools found in the shell.

Well, let me get this straight. He is going to sue us for harrassing us. Clearly a case of the pot calling the kettle black.

Bring him on. His case is basically centered around a group of "net-fiends" singling him out and inundating him with advertisements--advertisements that he didnt ask for, and at that--they purposefully sought him out to send these advertisements to.

Therefore, the case is simple. Yes, he has a lawyer. Whoopee. If it is legal for him to run scripts, etc to get our personal information to single us out, how is what has happend to him any different? It's not. Therefore, a simple counter-suit can keep his lawyer well paid. He cannot get us all, after all who amoung us is using real information about themselves on the web anymore?

His lawsuit will be thrown out, and at the very least, even if it does go to court, he better have decent security on that firewall of his...

  6. here is what I use on Server Naming Conventions? · · Score: 1

I have a *nix / NT LAN. As such, I have a oodle of printers and such, some jet direct, others just shared, etc. For the workstations, I just use their email username--keeps it simple. but for the servers, I ran into a problem using cartoon charachters for host names. I used to use names from the cartoon strip Bloom County. However, this year I began to run out of charachters. What to do? So, I decided to use something that would give me relationships (e.g. a shared printer) between devices. I decided to use protagonists from the plays of William Shakespeare (exempting Romeo and Juliet, of course). Hence, I have a logon server named Prospero, and if I were to have to assign a host name to a device attached to that server, I would use another charachter from The Tempest. To keep track, I decided to use the /etc/hosts file on my workstation. I use aliases for the old names, and comment the heck out of each line.
