Based on people's comments, there is a lot of confusion about how this locking works.
It's not a DRM scheme, once activated, the chip is permanently activated because the unlocking codes are burnt into the chip.
The locks are intended to keep manufacturers from producing extra chips during off hours and selling them on the black market. The designers will know and control how many chips are unlocked per day, which they will be able to confirm when the chips are shipped.
Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but it appears to me that the locking works by introducing noise into the chip using xor gates distributed throughout the chip.
To activate the chip, the fab must send the chip's code to the designers, they then generate the unlocking code, which is easy for the designer to generate because they know how the chip locking works. The unlocking code is then burnt into the chip, which fixes the dispersed xor gates to the correct values.
The fab can't easily reverse engineer this chip design because they are not given the original schematics, they're only given the masks which are used to directly make the chips (which I'm assuming are supplied by the designer).
Of course, this can be broken, but hopefully it will make chip piracy less cost effective, which will ensure that the genuine articles are able to compete.
People tend to eat too much anyway, this is energy that will go to waste watching TV, or builds up as fat.
Turning on the lights could just mean a few minutes less spent at the gym.
If we really want be green ourselves, we should watch everything we eat, and do. Wasted food = wasted energy and enviromental degradation.
A lot of energy is probably wasted to watch family guy and similar activities.
This lamp is greener than a powered light, because people generally consume too much food (energy) anyway, this is energy that would likely go to waste.
Besides, after sitting in a desk all day, a little weight lifting won't hurt anyone.;)
That would definatly hurt them, Microsoft would not be able to keep a monopoly on "PnP" device drivers for long, because if everyone switched to linux tommorow, native linux drivers are bound to show up.
Furthermore, the idea that the Open Source community would abandon Linux, is nuts. I'm sure work would continue on Linux, to make a non-propriatary device driver system to match microsofts.
Microsoft switching to linux, what's next Global Warming?? Or water on Mars??
I have some ideas, but I'm not sure if they are any good, but it seems that one of the largest problems with spam is fake email addresses,
If PGP was used to sign outgoing emails, and PGP keys were given out by email domains, and easily accessable, for example publickeys.hotmail.com,
then
the only problem with this is that a lot more bandwith would be required to send public keys back and forth, but if you cache known public keys, emails with unkown public keys could be filtered to another mail box and verified,
so, fake emails would be easy to spot, the signature would be un-verifiable, and email addresses that send out spain would be easier for large email domains to block,
I don't know, these are just some ideas,
maybe they arn't any good, but, adopting encryption and signatures wouldn't be a bad idea,
An explosion of hydrogen on a rocket would not be the same as hydrogen on a plane.
Hydrogen would disperse very quickly.. very very quickly, because it is a gas at room temperature and a fire (which is hot) makes things expand, the the hydrogen would expand consuming any available oxygen, and at the same time become very cold.. if I'm correct.. hey!, this might actually put out fires.. no oxygen and no heat!
Now as for rockets.. I believe they carry large ammounts of oxygen.. so they can burn a lot very quickly..planes don't need to burn all thier fuel in a short time.. so don't need oxygen tanks for fuel..
Now, the WTC, I think clearly withstood with force of the impact.. If it wasn't for the sustained burning they probably would have held together
It appears the manufacturers only have access to the masks (which are physically used to etch the silicon).
I think the term blueprints are misleading, I don't believe the blueprints are available to the manufacturers.
The designers can just create the masks from the blueprints and then send them to the manufactures.
It's probably hard to reverse engineer the blueprints from the masks.
The article mentions that adding wires to a chip after production, while possible is very expensive at the 32 nm scale.
Good questions!
This idea seems quite ingenious.

That's about the craziest idea I've ever heard.
Like, microsoft will switch to linux,

Haha, this is cool!,
:)
How long until they start selling these on thinkgeek? I think there could be a whole line of functional stuffed animals,
I want a stuffed penguin firewire harddrive..

okay, this is my two cents
