    Where does the US get its pilots? its water? its technicians? its star hockey players? Canada. We don't have to bow to the U.S., but Ontario (south of the 49th) likes to.

    This is one of the most arguable patents yet. It is a *perfect* example for those who want to fight the current patent system, because any layman can understand it.

    Oh yeah, and the cable modems do *symmetrical* 1 Mbps (although the mileage tends to vary between 40%-95% of that).

    You said it. My local cable co., Access Communications, is very cool about that. In fact they advertise setting up your own web server as one of the benefits of using their cable modems. The tech guys there are excellent (one is a member of the local LUG), and they even have a Linux section on their website (you still have to set it up yourself).

    In other words, it tends to be the big nationwide companies that screw you around. Find yourself a local ISP!

    No, I'm saying some sysadmin DELIBERATELY added the specific newsgroup "alt.porn.child.fourteen". Unless "alt" is recursive or something (I should read the NNTP and ntpd docs sometime).

    ISPs generally decide what newsgroups will be served by their NNTP servers. If they *knew* that they were serving a newsgroup called "alt.porn.child.fourteen", and did nothing, they are responsible. This is different than other ISP things, because they're not just carrying all content, they're deliberately choosing to provide certain newsgroups.

    Now, I didn't have time to READ the article, so if this isn't the case, feel free to flame.

    The problem is that a lot of countries, though they may have good stands on IP internally, have made treaties with the US to basically uphold US law in their countries. This is the case in Canada, and many European countries.

    What can we do about that?

    You're totally right. There's no way the OpenSSH project has to change its name.

    But should it anyway? It would really make us (the OSS community) look a lot better if we made a courteous move we didn't have to. And really, what will OpenSSH lose by changing its name? Not a lot.

    No, what ICANN should do already is move out of the US. There's no way an international authority should tolerate being pushed around by one (screwed up) government. What worries me is that if they don't leave, they might lose their backing from the rest of the internet.

    Because anything slower than Window Maker will not be used by me. Hell, I've seen Windows run MUCH faster than Gnome (and KDE, for that matter), which is pathetic.

    Though some of their products can tend to suck, I still really like IBM. Why? Because IBM doesn't bullshit us. They don't redefine terms (Microsoft "open-sources" Windows), they don't give us those weak little paranoid licenses that confuse people and inhibit code-reuse (SCSL, MPL, QPL, Qmail, etc), they don't try to deceive us, they don't abuse the patent system, and they release most if not all of their hardware documentation.

    Now, if only their consumer products didn't suck...

    I switched after about RedHat 5.2, and I'll never go back (though I might roll my own distro sometime). Debian has some glitches about it too (like only releasing a "stable" version every year or so), but I think it's still a lot more well-done than RH has been.

    I recently ran a RH7.0 system, and I have to say I still prefer Debian.

    Exactly. The fact that Windows needs a decentralized InstallShield for every program is one of its biggest downfalls -- overwriting libraries on every install, and being generally inconsistent.

    Rather than writing InstallShield for Linux <GAG!>, we need help rewriting dpkg, because right now it's a little inefficient and it doesn't support some things very well (like totally unattended installs).

    The last thing we need is an essential system component tied to a GUI. That is simply not the UNIX way; it's the Windows wa.
