Since I supposedly have neutral interests in this matter, I say I have to agree about the Europeans doing things more intelligently (*being* more intelligent, I don't know).
I mean, what's the reason *not* to use the Metric system? Or YYYY-MM-DD? Or the better broadcast HDTV standard (forget the name. It was on Slashdot a few months ago)?
Anyway, I think you all have way too much nationalism. Do you guys really have to get personal like that? -------- "I already have all the latest software."
The licenses of most standard system libraries (eg. libc) state that once you link your programs to them, you can release the result under whatever license you want. The QPL doesn't allow this, and as a result, it conflicts with *any* license (not just the GPL) that binds you to its terms.
None of the GPL, BSDL, Artistic, or even Microsoft's C library licenses, force you to give somebody copies of your sources on demand (a pretty absurd requirement). Only the QPL does. -------- "I already have all the latest software."
Try setting your mixer. It's amazing how many boxes either have the mic turned off, or set really low by default. -------- "I already have all the latest software."
AmigaBASIC. Get an old Amiga, if you can, and get them using AmigaBASIC. It's incredibly simple (no SCREEN statement needed to do graphics), but it's also incredibly powerful, with full access to OS system calls, sound, graphics, windowing, etc., and it's not anywhere near as brain-damaged as the was VB does it.
You could actually program the AmigaBASIC interpreter within itself.
If you're not game for that, then maybe try MC68000 assembly language (Mac, Amiga, Atari, etc.) or something. It'll let you understand the deeper workings of a computer, without dealing with the quirks of the Intel junk.
And then there's the Commodore 64-type stuff... -------- "I already have all the latest software."
BTW, go ask an ISP if spam is a problem. Nice when you get 80,000 different mails from a spammer with a dictionary. -------- "I already have all the latest software."
Well, that would fall more along the lines of false pretense/fraud (a criminal offense) than a copyright violation. When you bought the academic edition, you were granted a license on the basis that you were expected to use it for academic purposes. If that was not your intent, you should not have bought the academic edition in the first place.
Dunno if you could prove that. IANAL. -------- "I already have all the latest software."
I love how the MPAA compares DeCSS to picking a lock on a house. They act like the DVD that I bought is their house!
The last time I checked, I can break into my house as often as I want, even if I bought my house from someone who might not approve of it.
Also, how many people here would care if someone got the blueprints to your house and made an exact duplicate without your permission?
What's really sad is that Microsoft has been able to produce a more convincing propaganda-FAQ page than the MPAA did. I've also seen some considerably more convincing anti-DeCSS pages. -------- "I already have all the latest software."
If there were commercials every 5 minutes, instead of every 10, people would get *very* angry, would they not? -------- "I already have all the latest software."
What if I write a commentary on the song "Enter Sandman", and I record it and call it enter_sandman.mp3? Is that illegal? I think not. -------- "I already have all the latest software."
The last time I checked, stealing meant to take something away from someone -- to cause them to no longer have that something. There is no such thing as stealing by copying, because by copying you do not cause the person you are copying from to no longer have that which you are copying. Why? Because it's mere information, something that cannot be contained (prove me wrong by touching information sometime).
If I built a machine that made duplicates of objects, such as a table or a chair, you would not have a complaint. You'd be happy, because I'd also make copies of that machine. There goes the concept of scarcity. If everything becomes unlimited, who needs capitalism? -------- "I already have all the latest software."
Metallica tracked down users that were *providing* their songs to others, not those who were downloading them. Why? Because that's what copyright is all about - stopping other publishers from publishing your material. It's not to jail consumers from obtaining this material from those illegal publishers. -------- "I already have all the latest software."
Nobody can honestly say that rampant MP3 trading of stuff you didn't buy is not illegal. No one. People can, and do, try to justify why they do it (myself included)...but in the end, their arguments come down to knowing it's a bad thing, but, like the verse says, "I like it."
There's a difference between "bad" and "illegal". Everyone knows it's illegal, but not everyone thinks it's bad. -------- "I already have all the latest software."
Why would you feed the troll? (No, I don't agree with your views, but I still wouldn't feed the trolls). -------- "I already have all the latest software."
If a company wants to sponsor something, they will anyway. The only time a company will demand blatant advertising is when you already let someone else have it first.
Yes, the company should get credit (in the CREDITS file), but at bootup? Putting the company's name in the boot sequence is no different than spamming my e-mail account. You're putting information where it's not wanted. If I want to know who is responsible for something (which I often do), I'll look at the CREDITS or README file.
One should also note that people start to hate companies that force them to see stuff they don't want to, so it's not great from a marketing perspective, either. -------- "I already have all the latest software."
You have no idea how much transfer spam takes up, do you? how much of an ISP's bandwidth is wasted on the same data being sent again and again to all the different e-mail addresses on their server, do you?
Go ask someone who works for an ISP what they think about spam. -------- "I already have all the latest software."
"They" allow you to register anything, nowadays. Domains used to have to start with a letter. Witness "3com.com". -------- "I already have all the latest software."
That's really starting to irritate me. When I buy an internet connection, I want an internet connection. Not some stupid web-browsing service that doesn't let me do anything else. It should be illegal to call something "Internet service" when you are restricted like that. "Web access" would be more appropriate. -------- "I already have all the latest software."
Instead of a direct DLL, why don't you make the mp3 player more like a separate standalone sound server executable (think ESD). Use interprocess communication to access it, and distribute the source code for it with the rest of your program.
Keeps everyone happy. The MaPlay don't have you changing their code and keeping the source, and you don't have to release the source to your programs. It's a hassle, but if you don't like it, I guess there's other MP3 players that aren't GPLled. -------- "I already have all the latest software."
Why not?
Anyway, show me some coding style that isn't boneheaded that's illegal in Python, anyway.
