Their business model is free services in exchange for your data. The paid alternative which does not exist yet is an alternative nobody would want. Users who do not like Facebook can leave or stop providing it data. Facebook or anyone else collecting private data of non-users is a crime and legislators or courts should outlaw it.

People ask me if I am on Facebook. I tell them I don't have to because I have my own site. This seems to confuse them as they don't know what that means. Most people are not sophisticated or cannot be bothered with hosting sites or maintaining blogs. Facebook is on the phone and can be accessed from a desktop. That's it for them. Some years ago there was a report of a woman who had to send photocopies of her driving licence to Facebook or risk page deletion and the loss of all her business contacts. Facebook was not sure she was really who she claimed she was on their site.

  8. Just the calculation. I offer no opinion whether the study was right or Wong.

  9. If the total number were equal in both groups, then the control group would have 1-1/2 cancer and the high dose group would have 3. Hence double.

I took a brief look through the paper. Table 3, glia (rightmost columns) seems to sum up this study nicely. Control group had 817 mice, 3 malignant brain tumors. Highest dose had 409 mice, 3 with malignant brain tumors. Not a significant difference in this entire...

Cancer incidence had doubled... quite significant.

I m still using Ubunt 10.10 the last great version to use Gnome 2. The now-obsolete and broken Firestarter firewall works fine it and I have no problem what I do. Binaries of some programs don't work but LibreOffice latest version works fine. Whatever programs they released 8 years ago are more than sufficient & advanced for my needs. When I check the task monitor, I know what those programs are for and what they are doing. With Windows now, hundreds if not thousands of background services would be running. Microsoft had something good going on for a while. Now it is an oppressive prison for application software.

  15. Re:RSS for the masses? on Digg Reader To Shut Down This Month -- Latest RSS Service To Bite the Dust (betanews.com) · · Score: 1

RSS can be monetized in two ways. One - publish only snippets in the RSS so that users will see the ads when they visit the site for the entire article. Two - publish ads directly in the RSS. Most RSS readers use a web browser component which can display ads in addition to images and videos.

  16. When RSS supports offline storage... on Digg Reader To Shut Down This Month -- Latest RSS Service To Bite the Dust (betanews.com) · · Score: 1

The main advantage of RSS is the anonymity it provides. I used to use Opera as feed reader on my PC. It stores the article snippets offline on the computer. Even if the site goes out, I still have article links, which I can use on the Internet Archive's cache. For Android, I did not like these apps that store my data online. So I wrote my own offline feed reader and added it to my app - Subhash Browser. With Opera, I just need to copy the .opera folder if I move to a new PC. I like RSS so much that when Twitter removed their RSS service I wrote a localhost Twitter web server providing both HTML & RSS output.
