...are fast approaching. And thanks to nanotech, these panels will be so compact that we'll be able to have solar powered cars that will even run off of moonlight. Once that happens we can kiss the middle east goodbye. True energy independence for ALL!!! Rummy and his cronies can take a hike too. Vote Libratarian!!!! Gun, Girls and solar power all the way woohoo!!!!
They want to FORK us over. And you can bet that the nimrods who buy into the "Premium" Linux will not care one bit about those of us who use it simply because of both free speech and free beer...
Might this have something to do with the fact that we have a BIGGER POPULATION than those other countries? Tell me, now... which is more expensive:
1. A country with 300,000,000 (US) people of which a percentage (likely only the middle and upper class) have broadband and all the associated infrastructure (in a country with a tanking economy) 2. A country with 130,000,000 (Japan) people of which a larger percentage (even the lower middle have more money than the middle here in the US) have broadband and all the associated infrastructure (again in a country that has a better economy than the US)
I mean it. Internet policy is NOT a political issue. I don't care if you're a right wing, left wing, center, or looney wing voter, the politician you love only cares about the money they get from the media corporations. If they stand to make a good deal of money by passing legislation that says you aren't allowed to transfer music from the internet to your music player if you don't use Microsoft DRM (on all platforms), they will do it. And you can't do a damn thing about it other than not vote for them next time. But where does that leave you since you may not want to vote for the opponent and the third party or write in candidates don't stand a chance of winning? This is not political. This is purely an economic issue. And as long as you submit to buying the services that are artificially restricted just because they're popular or easy to use, you're going to get shafted. This is NOT about politics. Quit trying to make it seem that way and wake the fuck up you knob goblins!
Stop trying to tie politics into every goddamned thing in the world!!! Face it, ALL politicians are knobs. I dno't care if you look at any political party, when it comes to technology, the positive or negative impact on it that a politician can have is far more tied into that individual's understanding of technology. It has nothing to do with Republicans being more "tech savvy" or Democrats being Mac users or the like... It has everything to do with whether or not the politician thinks the internet is a series of tubes, or whether he believes that filtering the internet is unreliable because of what it cuts access to. Stop trying to make this a political issue. It isn't. These knobs will vote for whatever they think will get them more votes around election time and more money between elections. Jesus you people are fucking thick!!!!
As you said, it's the balance between the need to make money to pay the bills (or just amass a lot of wealth if you're THAT sort of person) or have fun (ie. have a life). Some of the answer is going to be based on how old you are and whether or not you are single. If you're below 30, take the Linux job because it will still pay the bills fairly well and it's still a step up from your current job. While you're there, you're going to learn a lot regardless of which camp the employer is. If you're in your 30s, then it's a toss up depending on how "involved" you are and how serious it is in terms of a relationship. Regardless of whether or not your partner is independent and brings in an income or is the stay at home type who relies on you, you'll ALWAYS want to be in a position where you can take care of everything reasonably well in terms of finances for the both of you. Depending on just how much money you're talking about with the 20% vs. 66% increase, you can probably figure out what would work out better, especially if your partner works and a sudden loss of that income would impact you both tremendously. If you in your 30s and you are very single and plan to stay that way for a while AND you really like your own time, then go with the Linux job. If this is a career change later in life, then I think you probably have enough experience in the work world to figure the answer out for yourself, so I'm assuming you're in your 20s or 30s...
I know that the route I chose once I got into IT was based more on this:
More money vs. More time
I could easily have gotten a job in the corporate world that would pay me a six figure salary. But I'd also be working a minimum of 50-60 hour weeks year round and get a pittance for my vacation. I was lucky in that I found a job at a non-profit that pays me reasonably well (mid $60s) and I only have to work 37.5 hours a week. I also get have nearly a month's vacation time per year to spend any way I like. The hours are extremely flexible to make up for the fact that I'm pretty much on-call all the time. Now, with that kind of income in the city I live in, I'm able to live a reasonably middle-class life. *IF* I really wanted more money, I could get into investing, but I really don't have that interest and actually find money EXTREMELY tedious to deal with at all levels. The income I have is currently support my wife, daughter and I very well. At least by our standards, which might be lower than a lot of people. To make up for the smaller income, I have a good deal of time for my family and myself. I also spend some of that time doing work on the house that others would probably pay to have done. Wiring, plumbing, plaster repairs, renovation/restoration, etc... The things that matter to me, like spending time with my wife and daughter and having plenty of time to work on Linux projects at home are all easy to accomplish with this job. And regarding my retirement, I've got both a private and a public funded retirement program as the organization I work for falls under the same auspices that the state schools do. In return for all of this flexiblity, I have to make sure I do a kick ass job in IT. And I do, even if I say so myself.;)
So the answer to your question is going to lie in whether or not you value your personal time, or personal wealth. I'm sure there are plenty of readers here who would argue that the more personal wealth you have, the more personal time you can buy. That is likely true if you enjoy the work that it takes to amass that wealth, whether through investment, or just having to work 80 hour work weeks for a number of years (ie. paying your dues). I chose a different route. I'm not saying it's the best one, it's just the one that works for me. So, with an important decision like this you need to consider what is more important to you and what works for YOU.
Well, seeing that I've already "open sourced" my DNA a few times around the world... I have to say the idea of people posting naked but non-sexual photos is a great idea. It allows us to appreciate each other's bodied with no value judgement. Once you've tried it, humans bodies of all types can be appreciated for their beauty.
Too bad you can't appreciate a little humorous vitriol. Oh well... your loss, not mine. I don't hate REAL Americans BTW. I hate the new empty headed buffoons who THINK they espouse American values. I'm proud to be the old style American that actually gives a damn about the rest of the world and respects their right to live unfettered by our culture.
You see? We CAN agree on something. I fucking think Flash came out of one of the five million anuses of Satan. If forcing ADA compliance kills Flash sites or at least forces Adobe to re-engineer it so it actually works RIGHT, then more power to them.
Easy... Microsoft is BIG on ebonics. You know... that technology where they scan your DNA from a drop of blood? So, I suggest to Microsoft that they REQUIRE as a mandatory piece of hardware, a pinprick login device that checks your blood to make sure you are who you say you are. Then, no matter which machine you use, they will know you're using it and they will know if you clicked the agreement at one point in time. That's all it will take. Thanks to ebonics.
Yes. Just like my vote (and the others who voted alike) for Nader made the Bush administration pay attention to the things I care about. Sorry. It doesn't work like that.
By the way, I also want it clear that I don't care what political affiliation someone has, I don't judge them personally for it. Politics are a very sad and depressing part of life that are forced upon us lest we let people screw us over with important issue. We honestly shouldn't have to worry about this sort of thing if people were just... honest. Regarding you, if there is some common ground on some views between us that we do have, I would have no problem at all befriending you. I'm a very nice guy in real life. Forums like Slashdot just tend to make everyone with a brain look like assholes or boring twats. So don't think that if I ran into a libertarian in person that I'd suddenly go foaming at the mouth and bite them in the neck. I'd just change the subject away from politics to see if there is something else to talk about. Frankly, I DESPISE politics and political discussion with every fiber of my being. But I also can't just let people walk all over my views either, so I make sure I voice them loudly. Pretty rational if I do say so myself.
I don't care who's offering to help as long as they are genuine, honest and sincere about it. If they're lying slimeballs, then it doesn't matter if it's government, religion, business or otherwise, I want them destroyed. The only reason you're here is to help me if I need it and likewise. Anything else and you've completely missed the point of living. Sure, it's fine to look out for yourself too, but get with the program and lend a hand to anyone who needs it.
Actually no. I wasn't being completely serious with that statement. Too bad you're not smart enough to read between the lines. I was being hyperbolic. Even though there are just as many people on the left who might do moderation or post commentary in response to a story or other commentary, it's never even within a particular article. It all comes down to how much one side or the other cares to react. Sadly, when there SHOULD be a reaction there may not be. As far as "conspiracy theories" go, why don't you take your tin-foil hat detector in for analysis, it's apparently malfunctioning. I'm also guessing you're either a libertarian (yuck) or a right winger, or WORSE... an "independent" who votes for Republicans and Libertarians. Anyway, thanks for the quick response. Slashdot is pretty boring these days and you're no exception.
Considering the ultra-conservative bias that most of the Slashdotters here have, I can't see this being a good thing in popular media. The right have their fingers in all the pies right now and you can't move an inch without being blasted with right wing lies and propaganda. The left is being incredibly squelched and this mainly has to do with one thing: right wingers are cunning. Note smart, but cunning. They know how to game the system to their advantage regardless of how small their numbers may truly be. The left, on the other hand tend to be people who are more cerebral. They don't game the system to their advantage, they make the mistake of trying to use the system honestly and as it was intended to be. So applying the same kind of approach to big media news is going to result in the very vocal minority of right wingers having even more control and shaping the news to their fantasies, rather than the reality that we actually have to live in. After all... some of us lefties live in the fact based world which is apparently a bad thing.
Add to this the fact that most right wingers don't like to think or persue more in-depth analysis of a topic. They instead prefer a digest that feeds them more "facts" to support their flimsy beliefs. Lefties, on the other hand like to analyze things to death, possibly to the point where their conclusions no longer apply when they're done with the analysis. By the time the left has the real facts and answers, the issue is no longer an issue and it's likely that the "stupids" of America have bought into the fast food "news" that tells them what they want to hear. So again, from this perspective, I expect to see lots of "in-depth" coverage of a story that involves EXTREMELY biased "investigation" by the amateur pundits with an axe to grind. (ie, not much reality based news)
Let's face it everyone. America is lost and severly damaged and it's all thanks to the citizens who don't want to think for themselves and prefer sound bites to dissertations. It's all thanks to the populace getting dumber each year and just THINKING that they're smarter. It's all due to this huge push to keep the average person stupid and happy. After all, what's a few thousand American lives lost in Iraq for a war based on lies, when you're fat stinking American asshole has a big cushiony SUV to sit in and drive anywhere? Who cares if the elections in this country are being rigged to satisfy the needs of the people who REALLY have control (people with lots of money and they really don't care about Democrats or Republicans as long as they can keep making more money) when you can go home after sticking an icepick in your brain, err... pulling the levers for the wrong (ie. Republican) candidates and watch it all in video game fashion with slick graphics as Fox news tells you what's REALLY going on and it jibes with what you think reality is? Who cares if you aren't going to be able to leave or return to the U.S. without the appropriate clearance this coming January and likely for good, when you can watch that stock ticker on you PC and feel like you're some kind of financial maverick which somehow makes you untouchable? Yeah... who cares about anything that matters as long as "number 1" is looking OK?
Finally, as much as many of you assholes will brand me as some liberal or commie "nutjob", let me make something completely clear to you numbnuts on both major sides of the fence (and you whackjobs in the libertarian camp too even though you're stubborn idiots). There are currently two major parties: Republicans and Democrats. The alternate parties will NEVER win anything other than some small seats here and there so they aren't worth discussing unless the voting system changes drastically. But the REAL key here is that there are also voters (that's most of you who are in reality completely powerless as long as you aren't working together) and there are also politicians (that's the jerkoffs who want to control you) of each stripe. So just taking the two major parties (Repugnica
I'm so glad this happened! This is the final and conclusive proof that we right wing supporters of Intelligent Design need to finally show up the scientific community! Here's how this works:
1. Scientists (the people who are always wrong) had this theory ("just a theory") about the age of the planet's surface. It was wrong, as science usually is. 2. They did some more REAL research into the problem and found that they were wrong and that the planet turns out to possibly be 1 billion years old which is really just their way of saving face since they know that's wrong too. Everything in the entire universe is only 4000 years old. Look it up! 3. The two items above prove that the concept of theories is invalid and what you really need is strong faith and god backing you up. This is why I.D. is the right answer!
Again, the main point here is that since theories can be wrong, they should never be trusted. Instead it's wiser to trust in a religion that's been around for the entire whole of existence (4000 years) as we I.D. folks do. So remember to vote against anything this Tuesday that supports science because the only reason science exists is to try and take down religion. Glad I could help out!
I don't know about you, but I get a warm and fuzzy feeling when I am sitting on the train tracks and I see a fast approaching locomotive that I know won't reach me until I'm either 80 years old or dead. In the end, it doesn't matter since the train will either be tearing my senile or dead body to shreds and it won't matter anymore. Right? The other passengers (wife, kids, friends) in the my stalled car will have to fend for themselves to get out of the train's way, but hell... my wife and friends will be just as old as me (and we all know getting old sucks) and my kids are going to be little super geniuses who will make good and kick the train's ass at the last minute. And if they don't become supergeniuses, then it's their own goddamn fault that they didn't take up the personal responsibility to do so and I really can't shed a tear. So, in all honesty I don't see any reason to do a damn thing to move my car off the tracks since my big fat bloated and stinky American ass is pretty comfortable right now where I'm sitting. And I can safely say this because Ayn Rand told me it's a good and moral position to take. Man I love this "rational self interest" thing, it's SOOOOOOO liberating! Or is that libertarian?
(The subtext for the thicker readers: Good God man!!! Wake the fuck up and live life like you mean it or something!!! Don't just sit there with that smug smirk on your face when death is approaching! It makes you look like that moronic reject president, eh... what's his name?? Oh yeah, Dubya! Fight for the lives of the people of this planet otherwise you have no right to live here yourself!!! Now make yourself useful or go kill yourself. Those are your only options.)
I'm a totally rational American who supports honest business that's good for the little guy, not the big guy. The big guy doesn't need any help. Plain and simple. I'm not calling for the dismantling of the capialist system like you seem to be.
The main problem with your worthless comment is that all of these artifical restrictions keep getting in the way of societal and technological progress. And for what? EXTREME profit. Who gives a shit if someone makes $600,000 one year instead of the $550,000 they made the previous year? The fact is that when you're dealing with the kind of income that the people at the top of the entertainment industry make (again for very little work on their part), it's very hard to realistically justify having to pick nits just to make sure they get their extra $50,000. But you sound just like the kind of fucking numbnut who thinks that just making money is the only reason for being. Sorry, but some of us are here to live and hopefully living free of the restraints of a cash based world.

Where does he fall? Huh? HUH???
What are you smoking dude. You sound like a freakin' commie nutjob.
