Technological solutions can rarely properly resolve these kinds of issue in the real world. In the world of engineering (typically controlled situations without human foibles interfereing) it works great. But we're talking about snakes like SCO here. They have an agenda that will use any avenue to get their desired end result and they would likely use whatever it takes to throw off any such processing in their favor.

You've just proved your worthlessness in this discussion with that flippant quip. Typical of someone who wants to bury their head in the sand about human involvement in the climate problem. I'll bet you also think it's OK to go through a red light if no one is around. I'll bet you think that if it doesn't hurt anyone, then it's OK to speed on an empty strech of highway even though you lack the omnicience to know whether or not there will be a car ahead of you that you don't expect. That only applies if you don't plan to provide support yourself for Zimbra. In my case we do plan to provide support. We have 2000 users (which frankly is a very small installation by most standards) currently on an iPlanet server. That costs us about $15,000 a year for shitty support rom Sun. Zimbra will be a LOT cheaper provided that we provide our own support and make our own customizations to it. Pretty much just hardware costs. Not to mention that you also have the option to purchase one time support for issues that you can't solve in house which is a LOT cheaper than iPlanet or Exchange. And Zimbra provides you with a much better overall experience than Exchange does. Plus it's not admin hostile like all MS products are. Just make sure your admins are REAL admins (ie. coders) and not shlubs who point and click.

If Sony (a highly regarded company by most well behaved sheeple) and Apple (another highly regarded company that trendoids gravitate towards with no real understanding of what they're buying) sell at Walmart, and that relegates them to the "crap" category, then all other companies that are equal or better than Sony and Apple and sell at Walmart must be crap too. I heard: "Blah blah blah blah. I don't really understand what I'm talking about but I'll make a vacuous promise that we will deliver something that will compete with the iPod and I need to use the word 'innovative' in there somewhere since we have a trademark on that concept. Blah blah blah blah."

OK. I realize this article came from a publication geared at people who are completely clueless about technology. But COME ON!! What kind of an answer was that?! I think it's evident that MS doesn't really know what they're up against and they are probably just looking to buy someone else out who has a cell phone that runs on Pocket Windows and slap Media Player on it. That will be their "innovative" proposition. When I look for innovation I want something completely new that's never been done before. MS has yet to do that. With any technology.

That wasn't really the tone of what they said though. The tone was more like, "if you get a PC with Linux on it... beware. That PC might be in danger of being used to pirate Windows". To most people that sounds like, "Linux is used to pirate windows". Not true, obviously. But to the kinds of people who read this stuff it certainly works out that way in their minds. This would least most people to avoid dontated PCs with Linux, especially if the PC never came with Windows on it to begin with. They specifically said that schools should be wary of PCs that are donated with alternative OSes on them since those PCs may be used for loading pirated copies of Windows later. MS has no right to dictate such terms. If I wanted to donate a group of perfectly usable PCs that never had Windows on them, the school shouldn't be warned by Microsoft that my PCs are somehow "dangerous".

  24. The Media Associations on Consumer Problems with Blu-ray and HD-DVD · · Score: 3, Interesting

The criminals at the RIAA and MPAA must be removed at all costs before they completely decimate all consumer rights. When I buy a recording of a movie or an album, I expect to have reasonable rights to copy it for use on various devices that I own. If I'm not going out and selling these copies, then I am not depriving them of any profit that they are entitled to. This is simple common sense. Whatever happened to the day when I could easily tape a selection of songs from various albums and play those songs in my car, on a walkman or a boom box? If anything, today's digital media should make these activities easier. And you know what? They DO. It's not the technology getting in the way, it's the lawyers and the artificial restrictions being assigned to playback devices and recordings devices by organizations like the MPAA and the RIAA. Those organizations are holding the artists, the distributors and customers for ransom. And why? Simply to keep their old, failing business model alive. Truth be told, MOST people would do the "right thing" and buy a legit copy of a song if the songs were reasonably priced (a few cents per track) and non-DRM. As long as there is DRM and unreasonable pricing there will be, otherwise honest people, trying to find a way to get "free" or "cheap" music. But as soon as some company offers high quality, direct from the artist to your ears, along with value added media (like liner notes in PDF and album art in JPG) full movie and music packages that are universally playable on all platforms, the DRMed crap will dry up. Kill off the dinosaurs. Show the RIAA and the MPAA that they are largely irrelevant to digital media. If you are an artist, work together with the P2P geeks to find a better distribution method that presents one file for a complete album or a television program or movie that you produced. If you are a user, spend some time exploring the alternatives that exist to big media. The quality is improving daily. Screw the fossils that are trying to control music, movies and television. Rescue YOUR media. Do it NOW!
