    I can think of one - stability.

    If they dont keep control of development of applications, then it will become a nightmare where they will be blamed for every bad app. To the user, the app is the device, and the device is the app.. they dont know the difference and apple gets the blame.

    So, keeping tight reigns on this helps keep that risk at a minimum.

    That being said, I hope RIM doesn't do an IBM-style acquisition where they just take the bits of the victim company that they like and kill everything else.

    Why wouldn't they ? They are a business and want to make $, dealing with the bits they don't need just costs them. I would also see it moving to all in house instead of a standalone commercial product, and the only BSPs will be for RIM devices. ( i hope i'm wrong, but what motivation is there not to do that? )

    But i agree, QNX is/was great, not sure about it being the "best", but it is great.

    That would be against the very foundation of our country and the concept of state sovereignty, and would have far reaching consequences as it would instantly give the federal government direct control over *every* aspect of your life.

    Might as well shut down all state government if that should happen.

    So the true ruling is that the FCC really DOES have this authority, they just have to put the rules in black and white before they run off enforcing them. Nothing new here, just that they didn't follow procedures ( DOH ! ). And you can bet when they do, Comcast will regret calling them out on it. ( of cousre even if they do go down, their board already made their millions )

    It's for apps that already have ads, such as the NPR app. ("NPR is brought to you commercial free by the partner whose banner ad is covering half the screen.")

    Basically it's a unified ad service for smaller developers who don't have the resources to roll their own. You won't suddenly see ads on your iPhone unless you download ad-supported apps.

    Which will explode in numbers now that its so easy. Just like the web has become..

    I have always, ALWAYS defended apple and their sometimes questionable acts, but this is WAY over the line and is not defendable.

    If you look close enough what they are doing is quietly pushing people towards windows only platforms. So really, they aren't acting radically different, just being a bit more subversive about it.

    True, but if they have announced they are going after single customers that use the bandwidth they contracted for i cant imagine that they will be kind to sharing, even if they 'offically' support it.

    Maybe I'm being cynical and alarmist. Oh well.

    Just because you sound alarms before the fire starts doesn't mean you are wrong.. Tho i disagree with the US being backwater, the entire internet will be a dark zone, just due to different forces ( some financial control, some government.. )

    Don't hold your breath about the dark ages appearing tomorrow, but it will happen eventually.

    No, of cousre not, but they shouldn't develop in spite of the millions of us who are sick of it. We *aren't* alone. All the time i hear the same thing from 'regular' users. "why does this take so long".. "why does my pc slow down when i go here"..."i just bought a new pc and its slow now too" "what is with all these moving advertisements all over my screen on every webpage" etc.

    Most people could care less. 100% of their *target* market doesn't care either. They just want a pretty net device that does minimal things, and does it well. The things they want to do are in the appstore now. And in theory, quality controlled with predictable results.

    Opening it up just complicates the target markets life. So you want something that does more? Buy a different product.. Even apple sells portable systems that lets you install anything you want without any restriction: they call them macbooks.
