    If no one cared, there wouldn't have been a fork a while ago.

    But that said, it *is* Deiter's software, so he can change the licensing if he wants. ( and we can all go about our merry way with the fork too.. )

    Not a slam on 'stay at home moms' in the least, but there are more of those then 'stay at home dads', so just purely by the #'s there is a better chance of them finding some time to be online during the day then the males of the population.

    2 - That is true, though your ISP might cut you off for violating the AUP in the process. ( but better that then fined/jailed ) ...
    4 - Dont forget the plethora of viruses/trojans out there.

    Too bad my PC has been hacked into in the past ( ok, actually it was my PC based router and all i had to do was reboot, but still you get the idea, trojaned PC's are quite common these days ).. And i use WEP for my laptop...

    One can argue that bios isnt a true OS anyway. Its only by really stretching the rules is it considered one.

    Umm no, its not 'nothing'.. Agreed its not high in large enough volumes, but its not free. Have you ever dealt with Microsoft on an enterprise volume license agreement before? Sounds like you haven't.

    Doesnt replace all the features of Exchange.

    I never said there wernt lesser alternatives, i just dont see them replacing exchange in most large Microsoft based shops in the foreseeable future. ( my defintion of 'killer' ).

    And before you call me a microsoftee.. I refuse to run anything Microsoft based at home, and i have in the past supported (nearly) microsoft-free zones. I just am wiling to accept they own the market for all practical purposes, and a hodgepodge of tools that gets you about 2/3 of the way there isnt going to change that.

    Someday, you wont have a choice. Expect the HSD at some point to require you to run an 'approved operating system' if you want to get online, or even worse if they go door to door ( dont laugh, its been done before ). All in the name of 'national security and safety' of course.

    And you get 2 guesses on what will be approved and what wont.

    Sooooo does that also include their virtualization products? Hmmmm?

    This seems sort of counter productive to me, i would think they would want peopele to run vista on as many machines as they can.. Especially if there is a chance they can push a user away from another OS. But then again, they are a monopoly, they dont always have to do what makes sence.

      In regards to your question: in war the goal is to win. Eliminating the enemy is an effective way of doing this.

    As a business, if you keep doing that every year ( up to 5, then you have to dissolve your company ) you better have something to back it up when you get audited.

    As a home user selling stuff on ebay, its not a big issue i agree. ( and is often the case.. selling off your old stuff for much less then you paid when it was new )

    I doubt it will ever really happen.

    There is too much integration ( vendor lockin? ) of exchange ( via outlook ) with the rest of office ( and AD, and document DRM ) for a 3rd party to ever be considered a 'killer'.

    Will OSS choices be an option for a small market share that can do without the integration, sure, but not a 'killer' by any stretch of the imagination.
